1971 El Camino SS454 LS5 Original Owner Original Paint All #s Match Many Options
OK guys, this is a great chance to own a very rare and original car for not a ton of money. This is an all original 1971 El Camino SS454. This car/truck still has its original California title(pink slip), original paint(less one replacement fender), 58,500 original miles, and all original drivetrain. This is a project and a great one at that.
This 1971 El Camino SS454 was originally sold out of Sacramento, CA in early 1971. The El Camino was parked in 1976 and has not been driven since. In April 2017, the original owner passed the keys to a father and son in San Francisco, CA who planned to restore the car as a team. Unfortunately, soon after, the son had a tragic accident and is no longer with us. I stumbled across this Chevelle truck and could not help but see how original it was. I bought it with the intention of parting it out. Being a car guy, it is difficult to part out such a rare car. I think it is only fair to offer it for sale as a complete car before dissecting it. As mentioned above, this El Camino still has its orginal California title which was issued in March, 1971. It also has the original California black and gold license plate. The car was taken off the road in 1976 after a minor fender bender on the left front which is the reason for the replacement fender. The 58,5xx on the odometer is the original mileage of this Elky. I have not searched for a build sheet in this car. I am confident there are multiple buildsheets to be found. While this is a project, it is definitely the right car to start with! There is a about this truck to explain so I will break in down into sections so it is easier to read: Engine: The engine in this El Camino is the original LS5 454 it left the factory with. It does not appear to have ever been removed from the engine bay. The engine is incredibly original with the original block, heads, intake, carburetor, distributor, exhaust manifolds, etc. It even has the original motor mounts, radiator cap, and belts. Yes, the belts are original! The engine had the intake and pushrods removed at some point and I do not know why. The good news is, that means the valves have been closed all these years which has protected the cylinders. I removed the spark plugs and have put a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF in the cylinders. I plan to let them soak a few days before attempting to turn the engine over. I checked the dipstick and the engine still has clean oil. Transmission: The transmission is the original Turbo 400 which is specific to the SS454 Chevelle and LS5 454 Corvette. The transmission fluid looks clean. The trans has the factory Stewart Warner ratio corrector on the speedo output as shown. The driveshaft is the original SS454 only unit. Rearend: The rearend is the original RVC coded 3:31 posi 12 bolt unit that was only used on SS454 applications. The rearend is complete and unaltered. Body: The body on this El Camino still wears its original paint. Being a California car, the undercarrage is quite clean with expected surface corrosion. The car originally came with a black vinyl top which caused rust in the roof as shown. The roof will need replacement. The floors also suffered scattered rust from the water intrusion through the roof. The driver's side fender is a replacement original GM fender from another SS454 El Camino. Being the original paint, there are no sins hiding under a past paint job. You can see exactly what you are getting. Interior: The interior is complete less some small components including the carpet as shown. The first (and likely the last) thing the father and son did was remove the SS dash assembly. I hastily reinstalled it to keep it from being damaged. The car has factory tachometer and gauges as shown. The SS dash has no cracks or repairs. It is a very nice unit. The seat retains to original upholstery which has become brittle in the California sun. Wheels: The are a total of 5 wheels. All are original to the car and are the original 1971 SS wheel. The 4 wheels on the car are complete less one center cap. The spare is a bare wheel with the original spare tire(very aged). Exhaust: The exhaust looks to be the original GM installed exhaust. It may be serviceable but I would plan too replace it. Options: This El Camino is not your average dealer stock unit. It came with a slough of factory options that all of us would love to go back in time and order. They include: SS454 Package Automatic transmission Air Conditioning HD cooling(4 Row Radiator and special shroud) Remote Mirror Power Door Locks Lighted Rear View Mirror Special Instrumentation Power Steering positraction rear axle air shocks cowl induction AM radio and likely others I'm missing Overall: This El Camino is a project and what an awesome one it is. A 1971 LS5 454 was the top dog Chevelle/El Camino of 1971. Finding one with the original title, original paint, and all original drivetrain is unheard of in today's world. This car will really be something when completed. $9850 Thanks, Jason |

19 of the original lugs are still there. I just happened to take a picture of the wheel with the one replacement nut.
Here is a better picture of the trans tag: |

I’ve seen the car in person. If you can get passed the bad roof, it’s a great project car considering how complete it is.....

The eBay buyer did not come through. The El Camino is still for sale.
