Your best chance would be over at Camaro Research Group. Some of the guys visit here as well but their forum is http://www.camaros.org/forum/ to reach out.

Maybe we should have a sticky for this? Some ideas for content below:
State DMV websites with VIN Search Ohio BMV Florida DMV ... Gov' Websites NMVTIS Vehicle History Report (fee $) NCIB - Stolen and Salvaged Vehicles

what is a NMVTIS report and what does this mean
that there is there is no record of that VIN? Does it mean the car is gone/not registered?

Many state bureaus will purge the VIN database after x amount of years of inactivity on a number. I just checked mine on the Ohio site and it doesn't come up. I haven't licensed the car since 1993. If the car you are searching for is similar than it may still exist but just not appear in a search.
There are private detectives that can supposedly do more extensive searches. Not sure what resources they have. I've heard there is much more privacy now since a girl was stalked and killed in California from her license plates.

Ran into the same issues with our Z when I brought it out of hibernation after 30+ years. Arizona purges the vin after 10 years if not registered. The last AZ plate on the car was from 1987.
I had to actually pay extra fees to recreate the car, and then they took an extra 2-3 days to research it and make sure it wasn't stolen and that there weren't any leans on it. I always wondered how they did that if the vin supposedly didn't exist anymore. Leads me to believe there is in fact some record of the car somewhere, but getting the DMV here to provide any more information on it was like pulling teeth. Turns out the serial number is one of the group missing from the NCRS information too so that was a dead end for me. I gave up. I basically have a 69 Z that has begun a new life Hope you have better luck. |
