How do I remove undercoating?
What's the best way to remove rubberized undercoating? A car I'm working on had the wheelwells sprayed probably 10 years ago (I don't think it's Ziebart, I think it's the Duplicolor rubberized undercoating stuff). I'd like to get this stuff off without damaging the paint underneath. Is there something I can spray or brush on that will dissolve the rubberized undercoating without eating away the paint?
Thanks!

Re: How do I remove undercoating?
Start with a heat gun and a plastic squeegie (like for spreading body filler). Finish with 3M adhesive remover.

Re: How do I remove undercoating?
I have had luck removing Ziebart with a pressure washer, using hot water. Blasted it right off. Most of mine was sprayed in the engine compartment and on tops of fenders and fender wells. Paint was nice and shiny underneath.
If you scrape it, you will scratch everything under it.

Re: How do I remove undercoating?
This stuff has been recommended for removing the heavy factory undercoating: http://www.sherwin-williams.com/home...g/peel-away-7/
There used to be an old thread about removing the undercoating from the wheel wells on a Mustang but that link is no longer working. |

Re: How do I remove undercoating?
Thanks guys, we'll look into the Sherwin-Williams stuff. This is a 442 with plastic front fenders (which are clean), but the back wheelwells got some rubber undercoating at some point, and it looks fairly thick.

Tom....No amount of money would be enough!! I finished the last of the undercoating last night, removing it from the front wheel wells. I'M DONE!!! Any type of paint remover will damage the paint under the undercoating, including the Peal Away 7. It will take it down to bare steel. I used a propane torch and a 2" scraper, and it was pretty quick, but it also damaged the original black paint. Your best bet is a heat gun and a plastic scraper, and I bet you will still have scratches. |

Re: How do I remove undercoating?
The pressure washer with really hot water (routed from my washing machine) worked great on the Firebird. No scratches either, since nothing other than the water touched the surface.

Some of it started on fire and I breathed the fumes. The next morning I woke up with the entire right side of my body paralyzed. It wore off (lucky me). Re: How do I remove undercoating?
I sprayed my Camaro with kerosene twice in two days, then used a hot water pressure washer. It came off great, without ruining anything. Jim
