For the 1978 Malibu (all body styles) the 4 speed manual trans was optioned at .05%

Chevy built 63,152 1978 Malibu Station Wagons. Figuring that the 4 speed option would be less popular in a SW than a 2 Dr the "1 of 50" may be pretty close to the actual production number

I had a yellow '79 Malibu wagon with a factory V8 4-speed back in 2007. At the time I saw 2 or 3 other 4-speed wagons of that body type for sale across the country. They are definitely rare but I don't know if it's as few as 50 per year.

Those are cool cars. I agree they are probably not as rare as the ad states. Anecdotally I have seen about a dozen of them over the years.
