Default Did anyone's musclecar get Rusty Jones done to it?

I was just curious and wanted to find out if any others had it it done to their chevelles or musclecar sometime in the 80s too. It defanitly worked on my car, zero rust on the frame.

Modern day Rusty Jones,No.
But Ziebart back in their day,Yes,I've come across many.
It can be both a savior over time, and a deterrent to buyers today.

My 72 was Ziebarted when new and then again at some time about 10 years later with another owner. As Rick stated some good things some bad things.

That stuff is everywhere and in some cases that is not a good thing. I think in my case it did prevent the car from being destroyed by the Chicago salt since it was a daily driver until I bought it in 1987 and it still retains original quarters and doors - with some minor repairs.

Many times I've thought about trying to remove the Ziebart on the floor pans/frame to see how nice the original surfaces would look but have never done it since it is so messy to do in a home garage.

Seen many cars with Ziebart. Did my own 73 Duster 340 with it. A friends 71 442 was done with it and he still has the car today. It definitely protected many areas that would have been prone to rust.

Recall seeing a 71 W30 at the GM dealer,it had Ziebart and they even sprayed over the Red inner fenders, top and bottom.

Very hard to remove. The stuff stays sticky forever and it seems to be impervious to most solvents. Go here for my recent experience:

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...opics/487291/8

It was great stuff for preventing rust in the areas it was applied to but unfortunately they didn't do the wheel tubs and frame rails in my car so that was the area that got rusty. The floorboards look great though!

The other problem back in the 1970s was the people who applied it. We had a 1980 Honda that had the Rusty Jones rust proofing applied by one of their franchises in Connecticut. Every hole they drilled started massive rust on the body because they never touched up the paint around the edges of the holes they drilled. They just stuck plastic plugs in the holes. In four years the car crumbled to dust starting from those spots. Of course their warranty didn't cover "areas the treatment wasn't applied to".

From what I've seen, that stuff can sometimes start to peel if it was applied to a surface that wasn't clean, or just due to age. When it lifts, it creates a perfect pocket to trap moisture/dirt/salt, and it's all downhill from there. You'd be better off to have no undercoat when/if this happens.

If it hasn't hardened and started to peel, that stuff can be MESSY. I had a '76 Nova once where they had coated the inside of the 1/4s, and the trunk floor under the mat whe the car was new. You had to be real careful with what you put in the trunk, or you'd end up having your stuff coated in black goo.

When I read the title to this thread, it made me expect to see cars that were modified to look like a 1970's pimp ride.

Our 1970 Black L78 4 speed car had the Ziebart treatment...the old sticker is still visible inside the trunk lid. They sprayed it everywhere!! Inner fenders, behind the headlites, firewall...you name it. There are also the plugs in door, rockers, door jambs, etc...underside, too. This car has ZERO RUST..about 90% original paint...it was well cared for by the original owner and of course by us for the last 12 years...I have no doubt the Ziebart has helped preserve and protect our Nova.
