My 69 Z11 (Maryland Zone display car) had Speedway Widetreads on it when delivered. The original owner took it on his honeymoon in the Summer of 69 and the car wound up in a lot of the honeymoon photos.

Here's a shot from December of 1970 with the original Widetreads still on the car.

It's my understanding that the pace cars did not start until about March of '69. This would have been the timeframe for the start of Polyglas usage.

'69 Trans Ams came off the line with F70-14 Polyglas.

The festival and press cars started a bit earlier than that actually. Mine was an 02D car built right in the VIN sequence of the COPOs. 610486, if I recall corectly. That must have been a helluva sight, seeing all those cars running down the line at Norwood.

My understanding was pace cars were fitted with both Firestone and Goodyear for all pre race activities. Whichever tire was on the car that won the pole position, then the lead pace car would be shod in that tire company's tire. The exception occurred in 1972 when Goodyear has an exclusive with Indy to showcase is new Polysteel tire and as such all pace cars came equipped with G60-14 Polysteel Tires.

That may have happened some years, but most of the time, a specific tire was tied to the pace car. Like you mentioned, 72 H/O. 78 Vette was specific and in 71 Mopar was always Goodyear.

Here are two photos from 1971, the actual Pace car that crashed,, you can see Goodyear and the other pace car has Firestone.

Cool pics. We know that Mopar was using Goodyear exclusively during that time. Different rules for that race!
