Seatbelt Dying - Color Change
Can you change colors successfully on seatbelts for a first gen Camaro?
If so, what product works best and what is the process? Does the color actually maintain itself or does it fade? Do the seatbelts need to be disassembled and then re-stitched (I am hoping not)? I realize the white Hamill label will need to be removed. I will be dying deluxe seat belts and going from light green to black. Thanks, Paul |

Aren't the belts made out of man made material? If so they will be very hard to dye and have the dye take
|

You can go darker with fabric dye like RIT. The trick is added vinegar to the solution which allows the dye to bite into the nylon. I have only done lighter belts to black. I don't know if it would be possible to go lighter or change from a color like blue to red. Light green to black should be doable. I have also seen guys spray belts with fabric dye and the results are not very good. The belts get stiff and just don't look right. Find a crappy belt and start with that. That way you won't ruin a nice set that are just the wrong color.

I have used the RIT dye with salt, but only black over faded black. They need to be REALLY clean! The color stays well, but will dye the label and the plastic clear coating on the metal parts. Best way is to take all apart, dye, then restitch, sorry.
The fabric spray dye will work as a spot treatment, but Jason is correct, it gets stiff, but some working the belt will free that up, mostly, but used belts are never as supple as new webbing. Wow, I have not been up to Charlie's in a long time, I wonder how he is doing?

I've used Charlie a lot in the past & always have been pleased with his work. His lead times, however, are always pretty long and his prices are salty. Again though - his workmanship is great.
There is another guy whose work I've been pleased with in the past. He does a lot of NCRS quality belts for half of what Charlie charges. I didn't ask his permission to post his name & contact info, so PM me if your interested. |
