Americans didn’t have to sneak into a speakeasy during Prohibition to get a drink. Many got their booze legally: by getting a prescription from a doctor and then buying their whiskey at a pharmacy. Alcohol had long been used as a medicinal remedy, making it sort of the medical marijuana of its day.

Harry S. Truman didn't have a middle name

The "S" in Harry S. Truman's name doesn't actually stand for anything because his parents couldn't agree. They chose the letter "S" as a compromise to honor both of his grandfathers, Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young.

By law, bourbon made for U.S. consumption must be made in the United States, must be made from a grain mixture that is at least 51 percent corn, and must be aged in charred oak barrels.

Unlike Betty Crocker and Aunt Jemima, who are made up people, Italian immigrant Hector Boiardi ran a restaurant in Cleveland whose spaghetti sauce was so popular that he began manufacturing it for home cooking. That's him on the label.

The black satchel that is never far from the president's side is called the nuclear football not because five specially trained aides from the military services hand it back and forth. No, the nickname came about shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis — as part of a war plan that was code-named Dropkick.

In 1898, a novel by American author Morgan Robertson depicted the sinking of an unsinkable ship. One of the most important plot points in “Futility” concerns the Titan, the largest ship of its day that hits an iceberg and tragically sinks at sea. While the story focuses on a naval officer’s life after the sinking, it’s hard not to compare this fictional story to the historical sinking of the Titanic...14 years later!

Hollywood would like us to believe that 1930s gangsters made wide use of the "tommy gun." This is a misnomer. The gun was quite difficult to use and was dangerous to the shooter if he or she wasn't properly trained.
