Default 69 Camaro dash VIN

Was the VIN plate installed in the dash before or after the dash was painted? Thanks

Default VIN plate

Thanks for the answers. So were the VIN plates painted dash color before they were installed or were they black. My car is red inside but the plate is so faded I cannot tell for sure what color it is, but does look like it is black.

Very early production cars, at least at Norwood, had color-matched VIN tags. Most are black suede regardless of interior color.

VIN tags appear to have been stamped prior to coating, then dipped in low-gloss black paint. They were then sprayed with the same suede finish as the top of the dash. Chevrolet produced and installed the tag.
