Probably because the L79 option in 67 and 68 was not a very popular option as compared to the SS396. Only 4048 in 1967 and 4082 in 1968. Now compare that to SS396 production: 64,000 in 1967 and 57,600 in 1968

Yes and most 396 owners who took them on got schooled.......Those time slips were in stock form with bias tires,he told me with open headers, slicks, gears and bigger carb the car ran 12. 20s in the 1/4.

By 1967/1968 buyers of high performance cars wanted big block engines, hoods with scoops or bulges, stripes, redline tires and most of all . . . a catchy name. R/T, GTX, SS, GT Road Runner, 442 etc. The market for "Q-Ship" muscle cars was very limited. |

67 l79...
Very nice car..
?? Not sure I understand the HP rating for the 67 engine...if it was 350hp in 1966, why is it 325hp in 67 ?? I know there was a change at some point to the cast iron intake w/QJ...but it looks like this car has the aluminum intake and a Holley. -wilma

The L79 in 67 did come with the aluminum intake and Holley 585 CFM carb. The 68 come with cast manifold and Quad a jet carb. Please correct me if I am wrong. |

The 1965/1966 L79 is rated 350 HP @ 5800 RPM. The 1967/1968 L79 is rated 325 HP at 5600 RPM.

They never made a 66 l79 chevelle, they rated it at 325 in a 67 chevelle because they didnt want it to hurt corvette sales even thou it was the identical engine in a corvette which was 325 hp.last year for the aluminum intake and holley.
