I've been struggling to remove dealer installed undercoat from a 73 CAMARO project. This
is NOT a full original resto, but will be mostly original in general appearances.
After having this body on a cart elevated on jack stands, I used diesel to soften undercoat
and powerful pressure washer to remove most of undercoat.

I have now decided to mount body of rotissieri and have since flipped over
I am planning to use more diesel and more hot water pressure to remove remaining U.C.
I will then spray under floors with DAWN detergent solution and pressure wash
I will then spray mineral spirits and pressure wash

Will new epoxy Primer adhere to original Norwood Red Oxide Primer or do I need to
use paint stripper to go to bare metal ????
Will UPOL RAPTOR adhere to Red Oxide Primer if I decide to go that route ???

I cant help myself and didnt want the hit and miss undercoat on bottom of
underfloor. I could have bought a can of 3M Body Schutz and added more
but chose not to... I'm still not sure what I want for a finished look ...
I'll see how I like the SPI Epoxy Black (semi gloss Im told) and will use UPOL Raptor in Rear Wheel House if not entire under floor (??)
I'm absolutely nutz fro doing this on a car that nobody (but myself)
will care about nor bother to look at....Some peoples mental illnesses
are different than others !!!!!!!!!!

After struggling laying on my back with body on a cart that I built
I now have body on my rotator that I removed another body from.

Other than alot of hard elbow work its NOW going alot easier and faster.
Inverting the body is EVERYTHING in terms of soaking the undercoating
and ease of access.

I would not recommend doing this ugly job without the use of a rotissieri.

Im using a commercial heat gun to soften and putty knife/wire brush to scrape.

The sand/media blaster that Im using wont remove undercoating as he says it
contaminates the sand/media that he recycles and sprays/blasts with again....
leaving black stains on metal that will impact another customers prime/paint process.

Im still interested in hearing from others who have done this and how they prepped
the previously undercoated surface for new primer...
I'm planning to scuff Norwood Red Oxide with scotchbrite after washing with Dawn and
Hot Pressure washer........

I'm still cleaning bottom of this Norwood 73 Camaro body. All the undercoat is long gone.
Spending way too much time trying to get clean enough (??) so as my SPI Epoxy primer
will have good adhesion.
Curious IF anybody reading this has cleaned under floors of a resto project that wasnt
being sandblasted.
Knowing what I do know, I wouldnt recommend that anybody do it THIS way...

Media Blasting is only way, best way....but my sandblasting vendor wouldnt blast undercoating as his media (sand) would then become contaminated....
After I removed undercoat he then quoted me $400 to blast off bottom, which I probably should have done......but figured Id just finish the cleaning myself................

Spending way too much time trying to get clean enough"...So the pressure washer didn't leave it clean enough? The last car I did was on jack stands by hand, no undercoating just dirt and oil. I was going to use kerosene and a pressure washer next time around, for a project that is undercoated.

After Diesel and Heat Gun to soften, then hand wire brush and putty knife, my 4000psi
pressure washer removed biggest areas of undercoat...........however im spending HOURS
going over every inch to remove residual stain, plus small areas of surface rust and other issues.

I am very concerned about the new SPI epoxy primer and good adhesion ????

I would never ever ever do one of these big projects without buying, borrowing or stealing a rotator............and then I'd PAY THE $$$ to get it sand blasted.

Seems like everything I read on the SPI forums says the best adhesion for the epoxy primer is a sandblasted surface. I know you don't want to hear that. Anything else doesn't provide the "tooth" that sandblasting does.You could try to hit it with a DA (dual action sander..not double acting revolver) but there are so many nooks and crannies on the underside it would take forever.

Dave, I am very frustrated with the cleaning prep process I chose to take
on this 73 Camaro body....I have too many hours (??) in the prep Ive been doing
AFTER the initial Softening Scraping Heating and Pressure Washing of the Dealer
Undercoated areas. I should have taken body to sand blasters which I still may.

While this is going to be a very good quality DRIVER Camaro I still want good adhesion
and appearance of the SPI Epoxy prime on the underside.

I'm told that the SPI Black Epoxy has a semi gloss sheen, so may leave and not top coat
with any further single stage.

Most epoxy primers are not UV resistant... They will turn chalky over time if left exposed.
