Default Fatal accident at Milan Dragway

A man has died after being struck by a funny car during a race Saturday at Milan Dragway.

An engine malfunction caused the car to accelerate suddenly and the driver lost control of the vehicle, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Expect to have to get out of the way fast. Never stand in front of or behind, and keep your head on a swivel especially with the High Horse cars.

I’m amazed at how many tracks allow any number of people behind the cars and around the burn out pit. I spend a fair amount of time at the track in Bradenton over the winter and there’s times there are 50-75 people standing around the burn out pit and behind the cars when they’re starting.

Not me, I’m behind some concrete.

I’ve been drag racing since 1987 for many years every weekend possible 180 track passes a year on average. .I’ve never seen anyone hurt even around the car on the starting line . On the sides or behind . The only time I’ve ever seen it was on TV at a national event when the flip tops got caught on the linkage atop the blower And that was once. And the crew member was fine .

That being said it’s a dangerous sport and we all know what can happen. This is sad and I feel horrible for the family but let’s not get crazy about making people stay off the track . Knee jerk reactions have made this country boring and bland enough.

Sucks that it happened but it’s also a very rare occurrence .

A friend on Facebook posted this about the accident the other day…..

“It was the driver's grandfather, behind the car to help back him up. The blower broke and let too much air in and rpm went through the roof. No stopping it.”

Really sad and a bad deal all around.
