Insight into how blocks were cast in 1969
I was looking through my memorabilia yesterday and I came accross a miniature version of the mold, core, and casting assemblies for blocks that we were producing at the Tonawanda Foundry in 1969. This was actually part of a going away gift that the guys at the foundry gave me when I transferred to Chevrolet Research and Development. I was Superintendent of Production at Tonawanda prior to my transfer. This isn't really "Supercar" stuff - but I thought maybe someone might be interested.

Re: Insight into how blocks were cast in 1969
What is the scale of those pieces, they look rather small 1/8?
Very interesting and unique, I've never seen anything like that before. Is that something they gave all the guys when they moved on or just something the guys made for you? Thanks for sharing! |

Re: Insight into how blocks were cast in 1969
The actual block casting is only about 3 1/2 inches long. It was mounted to a plaque with the dates of my service at Tonawanda. The core/mold assembly was actually a gag gift that they made in the pattern shop. We had a few problems with the core assemblies mis-aligning in the mold. The inscription reads "Parallelogram Effect" - the little barrel cores actually don't sit straight in the mold on purpose (hard to see in the picture).
