On the original cars I've seen the tape was used to cover the body holes over the rear bushings, the bushings were not taped to the subframe.

As stated by Mark there was tape over the rear sub frame holes. This was placed there during a body water leak test. It is a general misconception that the bushing were taped in place. Here is a good shot of the that tape, sticky side up. At least on Camaro. |

The ones I have had look like 2" black masking type tape.
