I'm real happy with how the color turned out. I started out with soaking the engine with simple green a couple weeks ago and gave it a good wash. I wasn't going to be able to finish that day, so I sprayed it down with WD40 to stop any flash rusting. When I got ready to paint it, I used gasoline soaked blue shop towels and wiped it down thoroughly. After I wiped it down with dry towels, I ran my propane torch over it to make sure I got every last bit off and to heat up the block a little. Next was Wax & Grease remover. Let it dry/wipe it down. Spray several light coats, then several heavy coats allowing a few minutes between coats. I heated the paint with the torch between coats too. Not close enough for the flame to touch it though.

Here are two pics of the 454 going in my 71' Nova -- the paint used was VHT SP123. TAZ

I used Plastikote on the Z when I did the motor. Yea, its glossy but it is super easy to keep clean. I don't mind it. For my latest project which I'm trying to duplicate/match up older paint I grabbed Duplicolor, VHT was way to red. So far so good. Let me know if you need any more advice Sam.
