We Can Make a Difference!
Just got back from spending a week in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana volunteering with a group rebuilding Katrina damaged homes. Probably one of the most rewarding weeks of my life. Progress is being made, however there is still much to do. We had people knocking on the door of the house we were working on to ask how they could get help. These people are Americans just like you and me and many are really in a tough spot over three years after the storm. You don't need to be a skilled trademan to help. If you can operate a hammer, drill or broom or prepare a meal for someone who can, you can make a huge difference in someone's life. I'm a professional desk jockey but was part of a group that insulated and drywalled a home for an older woman who lost her husband last year and worked shoulder to shoulder with her son-in-law. He was one of the hardest working, most genuine people I have ever met. I was touched and humbled by their hard work, gratitude and the hospitality. I have no words to describe it. Believe me, your worst day is better than their best day. It sure put my cushy life in perspective. I don't want to get political or preach from the pulpit, but volunteer and faith-based organizations are on the ground and getting it done. My roundtrip airfare, lodging and meals were provided. All I had to provide was a willingness to help those in need. If you can give a week of your time, check out the many volunteer and faith-based organizations from across the country that have programs serving the Gulf Coast areas devastated by Katrina. I'm glad I did. I hope to return with my group again next January.
