Please explain the issue
Below is a photo of an unrestored 4800 mile car: Comparing the two it looks to me like the Blue one isn't tightened all the way. Or is it something else? Last edited by Lee Stewart; 04-13-2018 at 01:05 AM. |

position and when the gas cap is put on it will show that it appears to be lose but really is the filler neck is installed a tad off. Not easy to do in anyway but it shows on a painted cap. Dave 67 Nova Boy |

Dad made the fuel tanks at Chevrolet Flint Manufacturing. He would often get complaints from the assembly plant that the cap was not straight after installation during the build, but in his defense, it is really difficulty to manage the production variation combined across the body, filler neck and cap in order to get it dead nuts all day long every day. When Danny Scott built the "Cars Incorporated" pro street Camaros they used the gas cap as the master electrical cut off switch (rotated out of position was "Off"; rotated straight was "On"). Dad's comment when he saw that was "...geez. All that effort to get those things straight...." These days we would try to desensitize the design in some way, perhaps by making the handle curved (or no handle), rather than giving the viewer a really nice straight edge to sight along. K

Actually, with the white pinstripe, the "recommended" tire would be a white wall. Also - the center cap domes should have a black stripe in them. The re-pop caps (which I presume he used with his 15 inch wheels) don't have them out of the box and many restorers miss that detail, as well as brushed trim rings vs polished. K
