Default WI Title/Registration question

In 2004, when I was 17, I purchased a 1986 Camaro Z28. When we went to register and title the vehicle, my dad filled out his information (my dad and I have the same name). When the vehicle turned 20 in 2006, we paid to get collector plates (still titled/registered in my dad's name). The registration on collector plates is a one time fee and you no longer have to pay annual registration fees.

Fast forward to today. I'm looking at buying a classic car. I'd like to get the collector plates on this future vehicle which would have the same number as my Camaro but with an "A" after the number. Unfortunately, since the Camaro isn't titled in my name, I don't think I can do this. Is there a way to transfer the Camaro's title to my name and retain the collector plates? I really want to keep my collector plate number for sentimental reasons.

Has anyone went through this before? Can a title be transferred to an heir and the plates retained? My dad isn't a car guy and we don't live in the same city, thus to keep things "clean", I'd like to be the sole person on the title.

Thank you,

Greg

I just did this same thing in IL with both collector and regular plates. I bit the bullet and went to the Secretary of State office in my town and was very fortunate and surprised to find someone who was incredibly helpful and walked me through the whole process. They provided me with all of the correct forms and then I came back with all the signatures and check for the fees to process it. Plan on asking a lot of questions and getting some push back as when I did it the first person I talked to did not know it could be done, let alone how to do it. Good luck.

Have your dad sell you the car for $1.
I did this many years ago, and just paid title transfer and registration fees.

Doesn't the plate stay with the "original" owner (my dad) and not the car?

In IL there is a form you can fill out to transfer the plate of the car to the new Owner.

I had a member here help me out (he recently went through a similar process). I also called the DMV and they confirmed the same process.

You have to send a letter signed by both the current plate holder and future plate holder stating that the current plate holder is releasing their plate to the new plate holder.

Title and registration process is then the same as any other vehicle.

The only major drawback is I have to pay $220 for title and registration and wait likely around 6 weeks for this to be processed. I can't register the new vehicle I'm looking at buying until everything is transferred into my name.

Thanks for everyone's responses and help!

Sounds about the same as what I just did as far as procedure, costs, and timeframe. Glad you got it figured out.

Greg,

Have your Dad put you on the 86 title as a co-owner. Then, you can maintain the collector number so long as you are good having his name on your car.

I have done this with my Father's number, as I do not want to give it up when that day arrives.

Best of luck,

Tim
