Old Street Scenes

I have always loved the parking lot shots - they don't need to be anything in particular - just cars in an
old time setting. A lot of the shots are like watching a favorite movie, every time you look you find
something you missed before. They are frozen moments in time.
I have hundreds of these, some I've taken, some are from family and some are picked up off the net.
I use them as a rotating screen saver - if you like them, I can post more week to week.

Have been in this Hangar a few times since I was a kid.
In the early to mid 50's I lived a few blocks from the Akron Muni Airport. At that time Goodyear Aircraft Corp. was still building Anti Sub Warfare Blimps for the Navy. They were awesome to watch, near 350' long compared to a 98' Goodyear Add blimp fo today.
Love the Maroon 40 Chevy.

Re: Old Street Scenes

Here's a special scene for me. This is McDonald Avenue in Richmond California in 1956. The big building across the street on the right is the old Wells Fargo bank where my mother did the family banking. Kress, on the left at the corner, was where I got my first car model in 1967, an AMT Junior Trophy '59 Edsel snap-together kit and it was about 69 cents. Kress had a killer candy counter in the front of the store that was staffed by old ladies who wore their sweaters over their shoulders with their arms free. My older sister treated me to my first candy corn there in about 1966 and it was probably five cents worth. (Man, the things we remember.) This area died in the early 1970s and today is a fairly dangerous place to be even in broad daylight. I would not have been caught dead here after about 1970. The bank building is still there but much of the rest of these buildings were torn down in the late 70s. The Kress building was removed in about 1974. This entire business district died completely in about four years between 1970-74.

AC Transit still operates throughout the East Bay area (across the bay from San Francisco) and I used to ride the bus on occasion back in the early 1970s when the fare was fifteen cents. I found this 1961 AC Transit promotional pamphlet on eBay a few years ago and laughed at how innocent things appeared to be in 1961. In reality, these people would not dare get on an AC Transit bus after about 1964, especially dressed in their Sunday best. They would have been red meat for all the thugs who lived in the rear of practically every AC Transit bus after about 1965.

I like this photo because you can see the shell at the far left! Coastal battery near San Francisco:

One of the funnest places when I was a kid in the 60s/early 70s was Playland at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Built in the early 1920s and pretty run-down by 1970, it was still a great time. I can almost smell the second-hand smoke (everyone smoked in the old days, right?), the cotton candy, greasy hamburgers and the musty moldy smell of most of those old wooden buildings. It's a wonder it never caught fire. There was a slot car place on the north end of the Playland strip in the mid-60s. Playland was finally torn down in 1972 and replaced with condos. The beach is just out of shot to the right and that's the west end of Golden Gate Park beyond Playland. Note the sand dunes of the Sunset District beyond GG Park. That area was developed in the 1930s.

San Francisco to Oakland commuter ferry goes under the new Bay Bridge in 1936. Battleship could be the USS Arizona but I'm not certain. Ferry pier and another ferry can be seen in the background alongside the new bridge.

Commuters happily stream off the ferry and walk to waiting streecars to take them into the East Bay bedroom communities of Oakland, Piedmont, Berkeley, and Albany and El Cerrito. One could read the afternoon newspaper and grab a cup of coffee in the ferry's soda fountain during the 20-minute ride across the bay.

Then the streetcars left and headed east into Oakland and other communities. Total commute time from Ferry Building in San Francisco to doorstep in the Oakland hills was 45 minutes. Try that in your car today! More like 90 minutes--on a good day.

Re: Old Street Scenes

Here's a neat old place I was too young to experience. Sutro Baths was built on the coast of San Francisco next to the Cliff House in 1895. It was a salt-water swimming and recreation center and later had ice skating rinks installed in the late 1940s. It went downhill in the 1950s and by the early 1960s it was on very hard times and finally closed in about 1963. There was a dispute between the city and the land owner as to what would become of the baths and when it could not be resolved the baths mysteriously burned down on June 26, 1966.

That is a '68 Chevelle SS396 wheelcover. Body color wheels would indicate a dog-dish cap was there originally but perhaps the owner added the '68 Chevelle covers or maybe the dealer had them and put them on the car for a little pizzaz to help sell the car.

Those shots of Charleston SC are pretty cool. The shot with the White Building down at the battery looks the same today.
Some of the other city street shots still look the same today.

The Cooper River Bridge shot is cool too but they opened up a new Bridge 2-3 years ago that is also pretty amazing. That old bridge was steep, narrow and gave you a full case of white knuckles if you pushed crossing it too hard, let alone trying to pass someone after mustering up too much liquid courage at some of the local watering holes.

These are great pics....look forward to seeing this thread continue.

That's the home's original owner in the driveway in the trunk of his '52 Chrysler and my parents bought the house from him and his wife in 1968. Car in the garage is a '58 Dodge wagon. In the garage and next-door there's a 56-ish Studebaker Hawk. When we lived there the next-door neighbor built a VW dune buggy in his garage and it was metal-flake green. He used a beater late-50s bug for the donor and I would watch him as he made the swap. I even remember going for a ride when it was finished in 1969.

That looks like an alarm horn to me - Look at the on off switch mounted on the fender. This was the way it done
back then!
-
-

-
-
My '66 had the alarm switch in between the flags
-
-

-
-
The alarms were easily over come - they were mounted the way the one in the Chevelle was - facing down.
A thief would just crawl under the car and jam a screw driver into the alarm siren and disable it!

Isn't that the old Customs House in Charleston SC?

If you look at the base of the building you will see round openings. Back in the day when it was built back in the mid to late 1700's that lower area was used as a dungeon and prisoners where shackled to the wall. The openings had no windows just bars and when the Cooper and Ashley rivers crested too much the water would flood the dungeon and poor souls that were residing there for what ever reason would be getting very wet. Thank God there was no ACLU back then

When it was built it was within a 100 yards of the marsh/beach area. If you go there today you will see that they have infilled the area quite a bit since then and water is now 4 or 5 blocks away with more than a few buildings placed between the old Customs House and the shore. There's a pretty cool pier too and a commons type area where a lot of people hang out. To the rigt of the picture and just down the street is the town houses known as Rainbow Row.....another one of Charleston's calling cards.

this is actually the Charleston City Hall, on Broad St.
I don't know who was in the basement but they were probably getting wet also as this is just a few blocks inland. It was closed a few months ago, under renovation.

here is the customs house now, with the famous basement, right on Bay St.

Actually Chris it's the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. At the time it was built it served as an Exchange/Customs House as well as the Provost Dungeon.

Here's a link.

Been spending a lot of summers in that neck of the woods since '81. Charleston, IMHO, is one of the most coolest towns I have ever been to.

A little boy was the sole survivor from the DC-8. Those were the days when the new jets would descend for landing at high speeds below 10,000 feet (speed limit below 10 now is 250 knots) and I think the DC-8 ran over the top of the Constellation, also approaching Idlewild (now Kennedy) for landing.

No. The 500s were built much earlier than the Daytonas so they wouldn't be at the conversion plant at that later date. Also, look at the grills, it has the standard Charger nose, not the swapped-in Coronet grill.

It's like cavemen and dinosaurs...they were not on the same planet at the same time.

I worked at a lot of dealers, doing striping and other add-ons for new cars. This dealer was Carter Pontiac Buick in Burnaby, BC, my biggest customer. I was there almost daily. I did GM warranty decal replacement for the Trans Am hood birds and other large decals that body shops were afraid of.
I did that for a lot of the GM dealers in the Vancouver area in those years. Did a lot of the anniversary Corvettes too, as none of them ever came from GM straight.

I bought a brand spankin' new 1975 Pontiac Astre and drove it all through college. I got 113,000 miles out of it before I traded it on another new car. The engine had a 60,000 mile warranty under which I had the valve seals replaced at 59,100 miles at no charge. Other than that, I had no mechanical issues whatsoever. I guess I was one of the lucky ones!

No one picked this shot out??

South Conduit Ave just before the painted starting line 1/4 mile west of the 150th St. overpass.
After you raced you would have to go all the way to Rockaway Blvd - make a left and another left then
travel all the way down North Conduit Ave to Lefferts Blvd before making another double left to come
back. About a 2 1/2 mile trip - not always an easy feat if you had a car with no plates, lights or exhaust! Sometimes the city cops would sit in the Diner parking lot by Lefferts just watching the cars go by!

Hallo, Guys, just arrived. Congratulations for that great post you all. Those pictures are pure poetry to me. Maybe you would be interested in that one below. The pic was shot here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil back in 1971. This is a public deposit for irregular vehicles right in downtown Rio. The terrain is still there, next to Petrobras headquarters, but no car is there any more, of course.
Congratulations!

I noticed that, too, but thought "nah, it can't be" The hubcaps could be easily added but it sure does look like the 61 'SS' logo forward of the Impala script on the rear quarter. The picture wasn't quite clear enough to me to be positive that's what it was though.

Also note the narrow band white walls and black wheels. Those tires only came on the Super Sport in '61.

According to the literature, the SS option was available on all Impala body styles except wagons.

Probably not as much as a 2-dr. I think the "two too many doors rule" would still apply.

It is an interesting photo for sure. I wonder where it was taken and the purpose for the 2 gentlemen posing next to their cars. Maybe they were traveling on vacation together?

Verne

PS: I blew the photo up and I believe I can see the column mounted shifter handle in Park, so that would mean it's the 305hp 348 (the only engine available in the SS with a P/G trans)

The first photo, from June 1962, shows the Downers Market Shopping Center, which was located at
the intersection of Ogden Avenue (US 34) and Saratoga Avenue. In addition to the Jewel, the center
featured a Woolworth's and the locally owned E-G Home Center among other stores.
Barely readable at the corner of the Jewel store is an oval “Burny Bros.” sign, a popular Chicago
bakery that had departments in many Jewel stores of the era.
The second and third photos are February 1961 views of Main Street, Downers Grove.

WOW!...Main St. Downers G. in 1961.

I was thinking the same Bill.
I honestly think DG is ONE of the Best if not THE Best/largest/well attended, most diverse weekly Il. car cruises going today. Two more local townships just cancelled there weekly summer cruises do to dwindling turnout and week economy w/funds needed elsewhere. While DG is growing with more & more new people & cars every week. You have to get there @ 3:30 to get a prime spot, last year 5:00 was more then ample enough.
Last week DG was packed as it was GTO night..
We're all going again tomorrow night,so I'll stand in those same spots & try to duplicate those 3 shots, includng the Jewel/EG shot.

c1952 photo of a Pan American World Airways Boeing 377 Stratocruiser being taxied/marshaled across Sepulveda Boulevard where Sepulveda passes underneath the southeast end of Los Angeles airport. The 377 was a direct descendant of the WWII B-29 Superfortress. Just a few more years and the 707 and DC-8 would put the "Strats" out of work. 377s with this tye of propeller (there were several types of propeller used on the 377) had a habit of becoming uncontrollable and "running away" and causing, in some cases, engine separation and several crashes. In about 1955 a Pan Am 377 suffered a propeller runaway at night between Hawaii and San Francisco. The flight engineer was able to secure the engine before the prop tore the engine off of the wing. The captain flew to the nearby Ocean Station ship (a ship that stood halfway between the islands and the mainland), waited for sunrise, and then performed a textbook ditching near the ship and all of the passengers were rescued. In military use the 377 was known as the C-97 Stratofreighter and the KC-97 refueling tanker. Four 28-cylinder Pratt and Whitney R-4360 radial engines. Yes, they sounded wonderful.

I had to get these pics before the sun went down Friday night,so hope you can make them out.

Then..

Now..

Texas Tommys bldg. is still there but is now a bank.

Then..

Now..About the only thing left is the same brown two windowed bldg. on the left and another farther down. That Drug store is now a Caribou coffee and the distant water tower is a different one today, but still in the same spot behind that tree.

Herberts' is no more, and will become a restaraunt.

Then..

Now.. and farther back.Looks like a lamp post is still in the same spot and they brought the front of the bldgs. out farther too.You can just make out a vertical blue Buick dealership sign in Dogs original pic.I think that's Carlsons paint or Emmetts today.

That photo is an art poster by J. R. Eyerman - I am not sure where it was taken,
but it does not look to me like Levittown on Long Island. I don't remember the houses
as looking like that and they also seem too close together.
My Uncle lived there and I remember that the house came with a TV mounted in the
living room wall. Years later when the TV broke they replaced it with a fish tank.
That was high tech for the time!

Awsome photos. i think I wasted a half day--ok it was not a waste. I was supposed to Golf.
I have always criticised movies and TV shows set in a time period that they were always using old cars that were 2 doors, convertibles and in settings where a lot of those cars were probably not sold new.
Now having reviewed this tread I see that a lot of cars were well optioned and above base models, lots of 2 doors,4 door hardtops with white walls and full wheel covers.

looking forward to seeing more photos. I will post photos of my Chrysler 300F that were taken in the 60's when the car was new.

That's my Torino - down in Chattahoochee Georgia - stayed in that trailer while I was training at
Ft. Benning.
The beach is in the Carolina's - not sure exactly where - the property owner had put those cars there
to stop beach erosion and piss off everyone in town!

Wonder if the black diamonds on the lighthouse in the background cound make it Cape Look Out in North Carolina. The lighthouse there has a similar paint job.

Yes, and that looks like the intersection of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco during the "summer of love." Doesn't look like "love" to me! Probably a pair of runaways from another part of the country--the Haight was full of them in 1967. If that is Ashbury going uphill in the background then the Grateful Dead's house is up there on the left. The Dead actually moved out of there to Marin County before 1967s "summer of love" because the area was getting too full of newcomers and the area's artistic bohemia that the Dead preferred was almost gone by the beginning of 1967. All those runaway Boomer kids flooded in and basically "loved" the place to death.

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Atlantic City boardwalk; the famous "Diving Horse" from the Steel Pier. The Capt. Starns boat would have come from the marina area along the Brigantine - Atlantic City inlet. Capt. Starns was a tourist attraction / restaurant that had sites such as seals and also had boat tours such as the one pictured.
Both attractions are long gone but, are part of Atlantic City's history.

This has to be the Wigwam we stayed at in Holbrook Arizona somewhere along old Route 66, when our family took a vacation trip out west in 1954. We were driving a 50 Buick Roadblaster and went to the Great Salt Lake, Vegas, the Grand Canyon and everything between here and there. We went west on old US6, went through Ely Nevada that you pictured above, went south down to Vegas, visited the Grand Canyon, then took the Mother Road back east. I still have the old road maps we used to find our way out there and back. I'll have to dig out some of the old 35mm slides from when we stayed there. Thanks Dog for bringing back the old memories.

Yep. It was still there this time last year, only they now have 'vintage' cars (anywhere from the 40's thru the 70's) parked around the lot. You can still rent a room there, or they also have rooms open so that the curious tourist can go inside and see what it was like 'back in the day'

You can find a lot of photos on Flickr.com.
Just go to the search function, everyone's uploads, and type in what you're looking for.
For instance, I just typed in '1969' and got over 108,000 results. Cruise through that for a few minutes, and then narrow things down by adding something else in with 1969.
If what you're looking for is 2 words, like Grand Hotel, then you need to put it in like this....
"Grand Hotel"
I have my photo stream on there that includes some cars, but I think you may have seen most of them on here in other threads.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/14278213@N00/
Make sure you have the time to spend though, you can get pretty sidetracked.

Looks like this one had the new Level-Air suspension. I had a red '58 convertible with the level-air
and a 348 automatic back in high school. Got it for free because the bags were shot!
It sat so low if you parked too close to the curb you wouldn't be able to open the door!

Dog, the Bossa Nova Camaro is amazing. 1968 right? 6 years after the Carnegie Hall show with João Gilberto, Tom Jobim and others. It seems that Ron Tonkin dealership is still there. I send them an email asking about the car but it won't work, as we now. Anyway, for me who lives in Rio de Janeiro, the home of Bossa Nova, that pictures is a gift. Dog, you started something here... Attached is a picture of a fire my mom's husband sent me. He thought I would like the cars. This picture was taken from the south side of the (then under construction) old Tower Plaza in 1959; this shopping center was torn down and reconstructed in 1998.

If you are not familiar with this shopping center in is at the corner of 40th street and Thomas in Phoenix. Bill the guy who took the picture said he got up on the roof of the house to take the picture. As you can see it was quite the event and the cars in that area were very nice.

My dad had an Etype so he really likes the Jags so I sent him this picture and he replied .........

"Thanks for the picture, the white and blue D's belonged to Briggs Cunningham and are in US racing colours. I think the photo was taken in 57. In 58 and 59 he raced Lister Jags. He later raced Bird Cage Maserati's and I have slides of the team cars at Elkhart Lake. The yellow car may have been driven by Masten Gregory under Belgium colours. "

Dad

Than I got this later
"Hi Rob

I found more information on Cunningham's D Jags. He owned 6 of them,1955 chassis XKD406 ,1956 chassis XKD 506,507,508,525 and 605, so all 4 in the photo may be his cars."

George just straightened the panels and ran it half in primer. NHRA didn't like it, but that's the way it goes.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while - computer issues again - looks like I'm going to have to breakdown and buy a new one - I needed the 14 year old to come by and recover some corrupted files for me!
Hope you all enjoy - I'll try and get another set up before I go on vacation this weekend.
Merry Christmas!!

Dog, I love the picture of the Bell Kingcobra (P63A) in the airport ramp shot. Dressed in Reno Air Race #55 paint. Military S/N 42-69063. Bell put the big V-12 behind the pilot and ran the prop-shaft right between the pilots legs. A guy named Bour raced it.

Or if anyone is interested (since I am computer illiterate), I can forward quite a few photos to post on this board. I tried to post a few in attachments, but they were too large.

That had to hurt!

Check out the "Courtesy" plate frame..

Looking thru these pictures makes my heart ache for that simpler time.

Re: Old Street Scenes

O.K. Seattle Sam sent me a link to Xplantdad's tutorial on how to post pictures. I really do appreciate that.I'm going to collect everything of interest in a smaller folder...it seems dog427435 and I have found alot of the same stuff, so I am going to weed those out. Here is one for now. Let me know if this is too big or too small. I will try to practice more once I get the pictures into a smaller folder.

When I was a kid my mom and dad took me to Sambo's. I still remember the menu with little black Sambo and that lion. Had the pancakes. Not a politically correct restaurant these days. Then again some of the photos here one could make the same statement. The picture came out great by the way.

Pic size looks great! I ate at Sambo's as well...didn't they have "tiger milk" and "tiger butter", too?

Re: Old Street Scenes

Tiger Butter. We would put about 10lbs of 1 lb sticks of butter in a big mixer, add crushed ice and whip it into the lightweight butter that we would scoop with a little ice cream scoops to put on the pancakes.

Years ago, all the Sambo's here in Maryland turned into Dennys.

We did the same thing in the kitchen at Marshall Fields, and added maple syrup to the mix. Rolled the pancakes and filled 'em w/the maple butter like cannoli.

That's still there and is now a Denny's, I think. Lower Boradway in Oakland, CA near Jack London Square.

Re: Old Street Scenes

I do have plenty of more to come. Like I stated previously, it seems Dog427435 and I have quite a bit of the same stuff. In fact in his last post were a couple of photos I planned on posting.

I cannot take credit for ANY of these photos...it is all stuff found on the internet.
