Burgundy Z's got Red stripes Automatically, the only color to get red ones...

That sounds right,be it a burgundy hardtop or black V/top Z/28.
If it came with a parchment vinyl or convertible top-(non Z/28 here of course),it would've received white stripes then.

Just an FYI- There is the Burgundy Z w/JL8 unrestored that has no vinyl top, white interior and white stripes. It was featured in the MacNeish book. So that theory isn't quite accurate.

You guys might be getting tired of me after last night, however some may be interested in more details of Nov, 8, 1968. So like I was saying there was a lemans blue with white stripes sitting next to the burgandy car. It had an euro bumper and a front mounted antenna. Dealers did little mixes of options just to keep it interesting. D80s were on stop thats why my Dusk Blue hadn't come in yet and since I was growing impatient, I bought the burg. Since the burg. has a rear mount antenna I doubt if a D80 would even be available. There was a tremendous price increase over 68's and dealers felt the need to keep them as cheap as posible. Mine listed for $3854.70 and it is really basic. No tint even. The dumb thing the dealer did was ordering the standard gear with M21. I have to ride the clutch 200 feet just to get it going from a dead stop! 4.56s is actually the best fit for a M21. I see why the second series of Zs came with 8K tachs. I wind the needle half way around again going to 2nd. One Friday night coming out of Debs Drive Inn I powered 2nd at who knows what 8K, 85k I havn't a clue, kaboom the clutch exploded and fortunatly it went down instead of up and there was debris flying around scooting down the street in front of me. The explosion sheered the imput shaft off flush at the tranny even. The case wasn't hurt so I still have the vin on the side of the case. The dealer was only 2 blocks away so we pushed it down in front of the service doors, by Monday morning there must have been 15 Muscle cars sitting in front with simular problems. Factory defects were real common back then!!!!

Neat story... I can just imagine Chevy service bays filled with nearly new Chevelles, Camaros, and Novas on the lifts with Muncies and 12 bolts scattered about on the shop floor... woulda been a cool era to live in.

That Burgundy/Red is a wacky looking combo...I like it because it's an oddball, but it seems strange they thought that was an OK color for red stripes, yet you couldn't get red Z/28 stripes on a black or white Z with red guts, or on Cortez Silver, or...

I have a theory that I can only speculate what probably happened the day 1,2,or 3 burgandy cars came down the line early in the production year. Mine was built 2nd week of Oct. I'll cover that some time. The bed is looking good to me for now.

I have to add just one more thing for Joe Barr. Almost any combination was available. Like an Impala Wagon with a 427 4spd. I remember a blue C10 with a red interior. I had a friend that ordered a 64 Chevelle SS loaded with a 230 six cylinder in it! Everybody loved buckets but a few ordered bench seats with 4spds and now they are loved. From the time I was 10 years old I went to the show room every fall to get one of every sales brochure and of course I still have them all.

Dennis...you definitely have a way with words!

Dan, please share more of your stories. Us people that are in between Dennis and Joe (that's me...actually closer to Dennis than Joe ) would love to hear them.

And I agree with Dennis...I think the future is in good hands...
