And last, but not least, I found this hunk of teflon thread tape inside one of the float bowls.

You do not need to use teflon tape on the fuel line fittings on these carbs, and doing so will often result in problems. The fuel fitting threads play no part in the sealing function, that is solely the responsibility of the flare itself. If you have a leaky line, either repeatedly loosen/tighten it to burnish it in, check it for cracks near the flare, or just replace it.

The corrosion on this carb was so bad that the castings had to be media blasted to remove the corrosion, and as such they also had to be refinished, i.e. "restored", which is unfortunate because this carb resides on a "unrestored" (don't want to use that trademarked "S-word") car.

When a carb is this bad you can't risk the build by putting it back together with a compromised chromate finish. The original finish was in decent condition when I initially built this carb for the customer, and you can see for yourself how badly the castings were damaged in only 1 year, and that's with limited use.

Note that the customer didn't do anything wrong intentionally here, they were simply the unfortunate victim of a seriously bad batch of gas. Along those lines, yours truly wasn't at fault here either. So please take this into consideration should you ever have a problem with one of my carbs--or a carb built by anyone else for that matter.

Stuff happens. When it does, we fix it.

Eric: what exactly is it in the fuel that does this to a carb?

Rob;

In this case, as evidenced by the brown rust on the steel hardware, it appears to have been water.
