Hey guys,
I'm working with a friend on his Ash Gold exterior and Gold STD interior LOS '68 SS and noticed that the top of the dash and the metal around the rear package surround is a darker color...almost a green (I'm color blind so if I'm wrong...sorry) compared to the face of the dash which is almost the Ash Gold but slightly less gloss. There's a defined tape line on the top edge of the dash and around the rear package area. Is it common to have 2 different interior colors? The darker paint is also almost a satin finish. The tape line for the darker color is under the windshield channel.
The CRG states that the interior colors are painted first, then masked and then the exterior is painted. It looks like there is the paint from the face of the dash under the darker paint. The CRG also sort of implies that the VIN plate is installed after all the painting is done. Strange that the VIN plate has dash paint over it...but at the same time, there's no paint on the rivets. What gives?
Also, the metal under the corner trim in the package tray area always appears to be rusted, as if those trim pieces were installed before any paint is sprayed on the car. Was that metal completely bare before the trim was installed, or was it at least primed? The last 3 LOS cars I've paid attention to are rusted only under the trim like shown here.

-----Im not up to speed on LA Camaros as opposed to those built back east but Im not going for the green paint on the serial-tag. I did have a 69 LA Camaro with the light green interior a long time ago and the tag definetly didnt have any color other than the black on it.........Bill S

Contrary to the CRG sequence of paint application, the dash/rear package tray area was painted after body color at the factory. We have a fathom green '69 Camaro with dark green interior in our shop that clearly shows the suede finish dark green paint that was applied in the dash area and rear package tray area after the body color fathom green. The metal package tray corners are put in bare and usually rust underneath the overlap areas. The vin tags are painted separately and do not typically match the dash paint, sometimes they are black, sometimes color painted.

Well, Here's another original dash paint car. You can clearly see the blue dash paint on the VIN plate with most of the blue paint removed from a scotchbrite pad. The paint is so far under the plate edges, it's almost like the plate was painted blue before it was installed. Again, notice the rivets are not painted.

Hey Mark, this makes sense as to why the VIN plates I've seen interior color have no paint on the rivets.  I wonder if this is a LOS or NOR difference. The 3 originals I've seen non-black were all LOS cars.

NOR and LOS were both random. Non-black interiors sometimes matched, sometimes did not. The tags were painted off the car and installed by Chevy after windshield installation which is why the rivets are inverted.

Mark, I don't agree - you may be looking at a body that had an interior repaired in the in-line repair booth after color. I was there (at Norwood) in '69, and the interior color was shot in the second prime booth, and masked off after the second prime oven, prior to entry to the first color booth. The package shelf corner pieces were installed prior to interior color, and were raw metal, which is why they rust.
The VIN plate process varied from plant to plant, and sometimes within each plant; sometimes they were black, and sometimes they were interior (dash top) color, painted prior to installation. The VIN plate and reinforcement were Chevrolet parts, and were installed after the windshield (which was installed by Fisher Body), with the rivets shot from below, as shown in the Assembly Manual.

John,
All the original '69 Camaros I have seen show body color under the dash paint. A quick look to the left of the dash pad has always shown body color on the metal areas of the dash on original cars I have seen. I have owned many '69 Camaros and all the cars I have currently show body color under dash paint on both black interior and color painted dash/package tray areas.
I was not there at the factory of course, I am basing this on the evidence of the original cars that have survived. It appears that many if not all were routed for dash/package tray paint after body color at the factory.

William's Black original paint 69 Z has black suede over spray over the white stripe color at the leading edge of wiper trans supports in the wiper well, neither have ever been repainted, can someone explain this?
