I am sure this car is just as original as the other L89 Nova. This will be the earliest car I have seen with the twin snorkel air cleaner and what looks to be a throttle rod instead of the cable. I do not remember seeing a four digit date code on a trim tag and the month being so far away from the rivet.

It looks to have 074 open chamber heads by the looks of the snowflakes. That would be a great combo with the L78 closed chamber pistons that I believe the engine should have in it.

I almost posted the same...I am pretty sure those are 074 heads,Look at the top of the cast area next to the exhaust port where the Winters Logo is, very flat, not like a 840/842 head. so much for the rare L89 option Is this the car that was on the Du Pont Registry some time ago

The trim tag looks odd. The interior painted color should be A for black. Not B for blue. The date is 03D. Why does it say 03D0? Earl

I am fairly certain these are later cast heads because there is no pipe plugs on the ends of the heads. If I remember right I think this started after June 1970?

The "B" represents the vinyl roof. "732" simply means a black deluxe interior. As already mentioned the rivets seem to be set too far to the edges of the trim tag.

The B after the paint color represents black top. The B at the bottom of the tag is for blue interior paint. It should be A for black. Earl

Yes, L-89 Novas are for real. I have photos of a dark blue/light blue interior one the day it came home from the dealership and have actually held the ORIGINAL window sticker in my hand. I don't know if this silver one is real or not, but I know for an undisputable fact that they do exist.

Well, this car belonged to a fellow I used to work with about 5 years ago. He had noticed my hot rods in the parking lot when I would drive them into work and mentioned that he once owned a "musclecar" new. He told me all about this car and mentioned that he even still had the window sticker and pictures of the day he bought it home. Sure.....I was very doubtful (especially the aluminum heads part) but I was in shock when he actually brought this stuff to work a few days later. I held that yellowed window sticker in my hand and read that "L89" clear as anything. I handed the pictures and W.S. back to him and a few days later he brought the pictures back to me and said that I could have them. I then asked about the sticker and he told me that I could even have that......next time he came across it. Well, unfortunately he never brought it back and I just had a very bad feeling that something happened to it. Trust me, I asked at least once a week about it for two years probably but it just never came back. It's a downer, but it is what is. At least I was fortunate enough to at least see it once. Sure.....some can call bullshit but I have nothing to gain by lying about it and enough people know me on here by now to know that I know what I'm talking about. Anyway, another interesting side note is that this is the ONLY "Musclecar" that Bill ever owned in his life and his brother had a '69 Z/28 that he purchased new. Bill told me that every time they raced, the '69 Z/28 would win because of his brother's better driving ability. I'd love to know the actual production #'s of these cars and I used to tell him that that he really did have a very special car that people still debate about if it was even actually produced!

Was sold in the early-Seventies and never seen again. The plant closed down about three years ago and we all got different jobs and parted ways so I haven't seen him since then. I'm pretty sure I have his phone number and I'm gonna give him a shout and see if he's found the sticker or anything else. I may even ask him if he has any finance papers or an insurance card with the VIN # and maybe the car could be tracked down. With some of the amazing "discoveries" I see on this site lately, who knows.....maybe it's still out there!

By seeing it in person Mark you put some questions to rest about if they existed or not. I never saw one but most guys never really new about an L89 anything back then. I think the only one I ever saw was the Stahl Chevrolet black nova from Jersey.

Got anything concrete to prove that car was a factory built L-89? Neat pictures, but nothing there to prove there was ever a L-89 Nova built.

Howie may be right, no L-89 Novas built.

Well actually there was a couple photos that I didn't send out, but to frank, I've had it with this whole L-89 Nova subject. In a court of law, my word would be enough on the stand, but people here still have doubts. Just because they have never seen one, they doubt their existence. Many feel the same way about God but still built churches. I have already seen this window sticker, I had my doubts 'til I seen it and I had my proof. I really don't need to see it again and to be honest, I don't want to harass the man anymore. Especially for people that will STILL come up with a counter-arguement. I thought that (black?)car at the 2008 SCR had bulletproof docs.

If it means anything Mark, I have way more faith in your L89 Nova story than either of the cars that have surfaced!.

On the black car, wasn't its pedigree based solely on a supposedly original POP?.

Rather then take your ball and go home, why not prove everyone wrong with some sort of solid evidence. Afterall we are talking about one of a handful at most, so is it too much to ask for more then your word in regards to something you saw 40 years ago?

Well Tom, it was NOT 40 years ago and I don't know where you got that from. I acquired those photos and seen that window sticker FIVE years ago, so it's still pretty fresh in my mind. He took the window sticker and pictures home that day, told me I could have them a couple days later after seeing all my enthusiasm about them, but only brought the photos back and said next time he runs across the sticker, I could have that too. Well, we worked together another two years and I asked him at least TWICE a week, every week for two years to no avail. I'm sure I was a pain in his ass. I'm convinced he just wants to keep it, or something bad happened to it like thrown away on a stack on newspapers or something. I've seen it, and that's good enough for me and the few others that actually trust my credibility. To those that don't, they can go to Hell (if that exists, nobody has seen it either). He first described the car to me as a Nova SS 396 that he had purchased new and didn't even have an inkling of how rare that car might be. He didn't even mention the aluminum heads to me until the day he handed me the sticker/photos. He really had no idea what he owned was so special 'til I told him.

Mark,
I'm a firm believer that we should avoid the always/never line of thinking so I accept there's a chance these exist. I think it was Schonye who said he always thought 'IF' one appeared, he would expect it to be a '69 model, and I guess that's what I would have expected too. To hear of a '70 model with provenance is more of a surprise, at least to me.
Do you recall how it was designated on the window sticker? If you choose not to disclose it, or just don't care to discuss it any further I respect your decision.

Mark, please understand that there are no known L89 Novas. I personally don't believe the blk car is, and I think the pics provided by Alan Forman in another L89 thread on the silver car tend to disprove it also. I sometimes wonder if those two cars have a connection as they both seem to have the same issue.
Mark, does the car still exist, or does anyone know where it is? How about the motor, trans, rear? If the gentleman who owned the car has the paperwork, and either has the car, or know where it is, you wouldn't be hasseling him. You'd be doing him a huge favor by telling him that he may have the "holy grail" car. And it, and/ or docs that prove beyond reproach, that it truly exists, could make him a famous/wealthy man.

The closest I've found is a guy who ordered a 69, and ordered the al heads the same time so he could have them changed out when the car arrived, because they couldn't order it with the heads from the factory. It was a day 1 al head car. But was sold with the heads separate.

Please understand, it's not you. If me, or Charley, or Howie said we'd found a L89 car, the same scrutiny would still apply.

Hell, and Heaven are intangibles. The depth of belief is up to you. Cars have docs, and original owners, and friends of the owner with stories to tell. If nothing else, the guy needed some L60's, cause that thing ain't gonna hook.

Thanks Dennis, thank you Ken, and thank you Charlie and anybody else that takes my word. It's not like I'm trying to make a buck or anything. I even explained to him that "You know, you owned a car that is so rare, people doubt that they were even built. It's kinda important that you bring that sticker back in!" You don't know how bad I wish I just would have Xeroxed(copy machine 2 rooms away!) it and been done with it. The car's been gone for a long time, he only owned it for a couple years and sold it a long time ago back in the early '70's. Now, L-89 stuff aside, I think it was really a good looking car with the Dark Blue/Light Blue Bench interior and dressed up with the factory white pinstripe and Rally wheels on it. It seems like everyone you see restored today gets dog dish hubcaps or the SS-type wheels. Does anyone know how many of these Novas got Rally wheels like this? Just kinda curious.

Until somebody "unquestionably" proves there is a L89 Nova out there somewhere, this topic will go on forever.Once absolute proof, good or bad, is presented in front of everybody's eyes, then everybody will move on IMO.

Mark, I don't think you'll find any numbers on this option. Even GM Canada's documentation service doesn't provide production numbers on options.

My GM Canada documented 1970 L78 Nova SS had the ZJ7 option which was shown as SPECIAL WHEEL - HUB CAP AND TRIM RING. Also documented RPO PL1 white stripe E70x14 tires. This setup was still on the car when I bought it in 1996. The wheels looked exactly like the blue car in your pics. As far as GM Canada can determine my car, shipped June 27, 1970, was the last big block Nova exported to Canada. Sold new at Belmont Motors in Toronto.

I think it's very believable they made some 1970 L89 Nova's. Look at the 70 L78 TH400 car that Charley has seen the docs on and the other paperwork that Ed found from Scuncio also showing the L78 TH400. It would be great to see the paperwork proving all the rare cars, especially the combos that shouldn't exist, but it's not always possible and the more you aggravate people the chances of ever seeing it fades away. We all know Chevrolet's records weren't the best so I try to keep an open mind.

Mark, the rally wheels were RPO ZJ7 and available on all model Novas in 1970. Your right, you do not see them on many.. Most all of the SS Novas had the dog dishes or the 5 spoke SS wheels.. I know the cost was extra for these wheels which probably did not make it too appealing for the guy who was buying the car to race and not for style...

Most 70 SS Novas that I have seen the rallys on had the exterior decor package, lower body sills, bright aluminum trim around the windows, pin striping etc.... Unknown how many had the rallys though.. I don't think there is any way to calculate that because of the availability of the option..

Mark,

I hope you did not take my comment above as referring to the blue car. I was referring to the silver car.

I believe you. I also agree with the comments on the wheels.

Its understandable today with clones fake docs etc and they guy looking to make a few bucks that any enthusiast may be deceptive, but I have learned never say never, look consume decipher if it is real on your own belief or knowledge, but never say never there have been too many cases of the never actually being real.
