The heads are at the machine shop, and here's the initial assessment: it appears to have been nothing more than a fluke failure.

Installed height was verified to be ample so there was no coil bind and the guide appears to still be good. However these springs were a bit shy on open pressure for the HR cam, so they are being replaced with a set of PAC 1201's. I'm also scooching up (technical term) the installed height a little bit so I can re-install the 1.6 rockers again--which will bump the net lift from .488"/.509" to .520"/.542".

On another positive note, it turns out the guide wasn't cracked after all, I was just seeing where the replacement guide was protruding through the casting.

The new parts will be here tomorrow, and my machine shop said he should be able to have the heads back together by the end of the week.

Note: I could've done this work myself since it's nothing more than simple parts replacement, but I wanted him to check the seat for me so it could be touched up if necessary, and also just to clean the heads up again.

Fingers crossed for decent weather this week.

Man what a relief.

That's god telling you it's time to dump the 45-50 year old iron and get a better performing set of Vortec heads on that SBC! wink LOL

Those are 041s?

I was trying everything I could thing of to figure out a way to swing a set of aftermarket heads, but it just wasn't in the budget right now.

They are 041 X heads--mildly ported with 2.02/1.60 valves. They've been on a flow bench and do out-flow Vortec heads.

As I mentioned in the build thread, I tried to find a pair of Vortec heads to test against these 041's on the dyno, but out of the 3 pairs I located there was only one good (read: "not cracked") casting out of the bunch. Buying a new pair of heads just for dyno testing wasn't in the cards, so that test got axed.

I'm guessing they have some work if they out-flow vortecs. My 062 castings (the new Hencho en Mexico ones for $600 pair, assembled) went 227 cfm @ 0.450" on a reputable shop's bench. Stock 041s don't flow like that. wink

Flow isn't everything either... the 041 vs. Modern Vortec chamber is night and day.

If I had a set of 041s, I'd use them too. I still remember hunting 041s/462s in the late 1980s / early 1990s when they the best thing going (and also rare and expensive). Things sure have changed in the SBC world.

lucky that the damage bill wasnt worse! I just fixed my wifes suburban 99 Vortec 350 it had a severe misfire #4 after checking had 0 lbs compression on that cyl. I removed valve cover to find the exhaust pushrod bent and disloged then I noticed the spring was still compressed, WTH? I rapped on end with a drift to see if it would seat with no luck, valve stuck open-when I pulled heads it had one bent exhust valve. I have no idea what caused it to bend? I saw no mark on piston but it had to hit it, I mean what else?

Looks like it just hung the valve in the guide.

Any damage/issues with that lifter or rocker arm?
