Laguna Seca/Saturday
Mario Andretti was the guest of honor and he was reunited with his 1978 Championship-winning John Player Special F-1 car.
Mario ran exhibition laps both Friday & Saturday and you seriously could not get him out of the car.His laps were consistantly in the 1:25/lap range and he made it look easy,no mean feat by a 70 year-old in a 30 year-old car...

Here he is doing a TV interview earlier in the day:
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p3/topfueljohn/DSC05740.jpg

Here he is after his hot laps, musta been 10 deep in all directions...talk about your rockstar status!
I managed to sneak in a side door to capture these:

-----Great, great pics, John!!! The two pics of the Penske Camaros trunk appear to point out that the trunk "quick fills" are no longer used. Is that the case, or is there something Im missing???........Bill S

Yes Bill, you are correct...I was gonna put that part in but you're too sharp.

I did not see the 6-wheeler run,I believe it was the first time it's been to Monterey. One of my all time favorite cars,it was very cool to see it in person. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Looks that way Charlie...but as I was inspecting the underside of the trunk,it appears that they were fully funtional at one point but are currently blocked off.

That by the way is the 1967/68 "lightweight" car that was found to be 250 lbs light when SCCA officals weighed it after Donohue lapped the entire field at Kent,WA in 1967.They told Penske to never bring the car back.
In 1968,Chevy asked Penske to bring two Camaro's to Sebring since it suffered cylinder head durability problems at the 24-hour race at Daytona.Since a second car wasn't ready,Penske brought back the '67,which had already been sold, hence the Penske-Godsall markings on the front fenders.
Since Penske had been warned not to return with this car,the crew changed the grille and the taillights to make to look like a '68 but they didn't remove the wing windows or add the side markers that are found on a '68.
The plan was to put the heavier '68 through tech twice and use the lighter Camaro for both qualifying efforts.
Since the team had two similar cars, except for the numbers,Penske used a rented hanger with black-out windows at the airstrip to perform his swindle. The heavier car went through tech twice with two sets of numbers while the lightweight car performed the qualifying duties. This allowed both cars to compete despite the distinct performance difference between them...

Sneaky bastard that Penske was... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I have read about this car but this is the first time it's been to Monterey and the first time I've seen it.

I have the dry brakes blocked off on a few of my cars too. It is a hassel to use the filler or dump tanks . Most of the older stuff wont take a dual red head you need seperate filler and vent and even the old TA cars it can be hassel fueling through those old fillers. And since we pretty much do 20-30 min sprint races now with the old cars it is just easier to go and unscrew a gas cap on the cell and put the nozzel in at the track pump and fillerup. Plus it is safer all the way around.

As always great photos John . Three years in a row in the IMSA group, it was tough to miss this year
