I found a killer 61 with duel carbs, silver/red 4 speed with bullit proof paperwork but not the original motor and it wouldnt do.. I feel paperwork for one of 18 cars built should be better then original motor NO paperwork... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Verne,

Isn't the often quoted 409/360 production quantity of 142 units in SS cars incorrect and the 142 number really represents total production in all body styles regardless of trim series?.

I think somebody had a 61 car outside at the US 30 show in York...not sure if it was a 409..??? perhaps someone here saw the car..it was so hot outside I didn't take many walks http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drool.gif

I think someone could find Gold Chicken lips alot easier. I had 2 early 61 blocks and know of someone else who had 3 over the last 20 some years. So that takes 5 of the cars out of the search.

Pete,
That's correct. '61 409 production began in Nov. ('60) and the first Super Sport was more than a few months later. Total Tonawanda engine production was a little over 300 (I have the actual number here somewhere). I'm purely guessing, but the "one of 18" number probably refers to a rumored number of 2x4 '61s produced. This is absolutely not a jab toward Richp, but that is nothing more than a rumor. There have been no confirmed accounts of Chevrolet ever producing such a car. Early 2x4 intakes and #690 heads were made available through dealers and fitted onto existing cars, such as Nicholson's and Strickler's.

Wilma,
I spent a LOT of time looking over that '61 Biscayne outside at York. It's an old drag racer and survivor that was originally a 3x2 348 car.

Rich,
Without getting myself in a sling (therefore, I'm not mentioning names)............if you were referring to a certain shadow gray '61 SS that was built in TX, has "paperwork", and was sold at auction for big $$ not long ago, all I can say is STAY AWAY. The car is a 100% fake.

This my first post here (hope it's ok to post here) this is a topic that is dear to me as I love any '61 automobile with a big motor. Not saying one of these cars doesn't exist but I think the earlier member that referred to the golden chicken lips might be close to being correct.
If you think about what is being discussed here, according to most records, Chevrolet only built 453 Super Sports, there were approx. 6000 Chevrolet dealers across the country in that time frame so think about the chances of any given dealer getting their hands on one. Then, they built 142 cars with the new 409 motor, these motors were installed in any of the big body cars and Chevrolet didn't keep records to show where these motors went. Just to find a '61 Chevrolet of any body style with a '61 409 motor would be outstanding but now we want it to be in the already super rare SS body. On top of all this, we are looking for it to be the original motor!!!!
Good luck!!!!

Hi Tommy. Welcome to the site.

I also welcome you to this site Tommy. It's a Supercar site , but there is a teeny bit of interest in W powered cars here. This actually is a site where many hobbiests mingle who enjoy and appreciate real and rare cars, no matter their gender or vintage. I'm sure that you being one who owns TWO REAL '61 Super Sports will be welcome here.
I'm glad you decided to join the site. Who knows, they might even decide to add an "early muscle" forum. But then, that would probably only attract 1 or 2 other people...................HA! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

PS: Tommy and I have been friends for a while,(and have shared a few things in life)and I am very familiar with his two real cars. (not the mention the others that are crammed in the garage)............

Hey guys,
Thanks for the warm welcome. This seems like a really great site and I see some familiar names. Verne is a very special freind, not just a car freind but someone who I will forever be thankful too because he was there for me when I lost a loved one.
Verne mentioned my dream collection....that being to own a '61 Chevrolet, '61 Ford and a '61 Pontiac, all with the biggest motor available. I have been working on this dream for the past 10 years or so and will post photos of my cars later but I must admit that I have no idea how to do that but will figure it out. I don't have access to the photos until I get home tonight.
As I said, I like the early muscle cars and presently own two 1961 Impala SS's, both are the real thing and yes, one is a 409. The one with the 409 is a factory built Super Sport but was originally a 348/350 horse car. Actually, Verne located this car for me, it was just a body, no motor or transmission. A few years ago I was lucky enough to find a '61 409 motor that was complete from carb to oil pan and that motor is in the SS. It's a Midnight Blue car, was just completed early this summer and was displayed for the first time this year in the Invitational area of the G.M. Nationals.
The other SS is white with red interior, a 348/305 4 speed car that was sold new in my hometown of Chester, Va, it was bought new and owned by the same gentleman until 1996 when I purchased it from him. This car is documented by orginal paperwork from the day of sale, said to be one of the most original SS's still around. Original motor, trans, carb, starter, gen., shifter etc. The old man never replaced anything, just had stuff rebuilt. The car still has the grease in the transmission that the factory put in it! This car is presently on loan to Floyd Garrett's Musclecar museum.
My other cars are a 1961 Ford Starliner 390/401 4 speed. This is an original "hipo" 390/375 horse, 3 speed car with the dealer installed 3x2 setup and the 4 speed transmission. My lastest car completes my "dream collection", I bought the '61 Ventura 425A 4 speed car that was discussed on this site back in July. Verne made me aware of this car also (the money this man has cost me!!!!!!)
Photo's later.
Tommy

Thanks, I'm going by there next week on the way to an AACA show in Tn., looking forward to it, I haven't seen the car since last October.

I forgot, Floyd has another of my cars...the red '66 427/425 Impala that is in the museum is a car that I owned and restored back in the nineties, I sold it to a gentleman from Fla., it changed hands again last year and Floyd wound up with it.

When you get ready to post some pics of your cars on another forum, let me know if you want me to post a few for you. I have plenty of good shots of your cars, you know. (except the Poncho)

As for me costing you so much money, I guess the next time I confirm there's a real '61 SS available that's not complete and needs some body work, I'd better not tell you huh? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

No, Floyd bought the car from a private owner. The car was in several magazines in the mid-ninties, was featured in Super Chevy twice (Dec.'93 & Nov.'95. Last time it was featured was in Chevy Rumble Apr/May 2002. Floyd told me that one of the TV channels used it in a Muscle Car special about a year ago. I heard it was on HD TV
