This morning my son came in and said "dad I think there is an animal in the garage, I heard some scratching or something" well we went and sat in the garage for a while and to my horror I heard the sound of mouse teeth grinding on metal at the back on my Impala!!!!!!!!

I searched the site and read about Irish spring soap and mothballs. Are these the best way to get the bugger out and how long will it take to get the smell out of the car ?????

Any other ideas or tips, I cant use poison because we have pets and I fear one of them finding a dead mouse would surely look upon it as a delicacy.

Dru,

tried those in the shed last year and they didnt seem to work. I think they work for a while and then the aminals get used to them http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Maybe if we parked your yenko in there for a while it would scare them away (just leave the keys in case i need to move it!!)

I would just put a couple mouse traps with cheese in the trunk and seating area. Roll up the windows so the pets can't get them.

Peanut butter on a trap is better than cheese. I use it alot. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Smear peanut butter into a glue trap.Once the mouse goes in it,they're done for.
Then pick up the trap & throw it away or give it to a local snake owner.

Don't delay and get a mousetrap baited w/ peanut butter inside the trunk pronto!.
Keep checking it regularly and resetting it as req'd..

If the mouse piss smell has already happened, while cleaning the interior make sure to drop the underdash heater/defroster duct hoses and clean them out too..

My chum had an invasion of mice last winter in his car carrier and is still cleaning and fighting the smell..
Searching online he's read some horror stories about how hard the smell is to get rid of once it permeates the interior and how it attracts more of Mickey's pals..
Also someone told him putting old Cat$hit in the vehicle helps keep them away and smells better than mothballs?.

As far as the smell in buddy's truck goes, like the Seinfeld episode w/ the valet parking guy, the smell has taken over and he's cleaned and recleaned everything but it's having no lasting effect..
Next step is he's gonna start a couple small logs on fire in a steel bucket and smoke the interior out w/ the windows closed...all while standing by w/ a fire extinguisher of course..

Good luck!.

Yep, works great for me too. Plus, if you don't catch them, at least they'll stay busy the rest of the day licking the roof of their mouth. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I used peanut butter on a regular mouse trap and they would lick it off without setting the trap. My suggestion would be to smash cheese on the trigger of the trap. Just use a reg mouse trap and check it daily, then you will be done. I would also suggest placing several traps next to each wall of your garage to catch any other perpetrators. Place it bait side towards the wall. There usually is more than one. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

If you can be sure to keep it locked inside the car or trunk away from pets/kids, don't forget the glued peanuts on the log-roller/bucket of antifreeze trap posted here before..
I believe you can leave it unattended for the season since the antifreeze pickles the caught critters?.

I've found that the peanut butter only works once it's old. When used fresh the little buggers more often than not get a full belly and leave you hanging.

If you take a fruit strip and cut it into small rectangles, these can easily be clamped into most mouse traps. When the mice go for a snack they need to tug on the fruit strip and bingo, one less critter to worry about.

Traps are the only way to go!!!

I saw the antifreeze trap looks nice. In the trunk is a good idea!!!!!!!!

It scares me a little because of the dogs. I had a Rott that I think got into some antifreeze a couple of years ago and had to put her down.

I think Rick had a dog last year that got into coolant.

Seen Verminators that show is awesome!!!!!

Using sewing thread, tie a small piece of bacon to a standard spring type trap. It will work.

I have heard that a simple bucket of water with a wire across the top and a small piece of wood that the wire runs through in the middle with some peanut butter on it and a ramp up the side of the bucket, they climb up and get on the piece of wood and when it spins they fall into the bucket and drowned.

www.ratzapper.com (http://www.ratzapper.com)

we use it at work and its great. light flashes when its zaps one an you just pick it up and dump it out in the trash. Place more bait (which comes with it) in it turn it on and your ready to go again.

Not good if you have small pets though as it will also get rid of Mongooses as well http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I put a couple pieces of Warfin around my garage and it keeps rodents away. It is basically blood thinner that when rodents eat it and they love it there blood thins out and they die. Available at most hardware stores.

believe it or not I tried the irish spring soap.I put it in the car 2 years ago. I can't remember how long after I checked it again to find that the mice ate about half of the bars. Besides the green droppings at first, I have'nt seen any evidence of mice in the car since. And the fresh Irish Spring smell leaves it smelling "manley yes"

VERY IMPORTANT FACT!!!!!!

If you kill or catch what is in there make sure you listen VERY carefully in and around the car for several days. Mice don't go into cars to eat they go in there to nest! The gestation period is short for mice so if you take mama away the little ones will die and you have more little dead problems. If you listen VERY carefully after mama is gone, you will here the babies making little squeaking noises and can track them down. m

Unfortunately,

Set some traps in the trunk and on the floor. Im going to pick some more up today and set up a perimeter around the garage.

No evidence yet.

I've used instant mashed potato flakes with good results. Put them down in little piles, and just leave them. The mice think it's great that you're feeding them, and you are. Their problems start when they need a drink. They swell up and die, as they are unable to regurgitate.
It does work. I had a packrat in the shed, and he ate some of what I provided. He's definitely gone.
Dogs and cats aren't affected.

If you put the trap in the trunk make sure you put some newspaper under the trap. Those traps can get messy sometimes. I have found that placing the trap under the car, rather than in it, is just as effective.

I have been spreading bounce sheets (mostly the used ones) around the garage and in and around the old cars to keep the varmits away.
So far (knock on wood) I have not had a mouse or Vole in the garage for 4-5 years. Not sure what it is that works, but so far so good.
