View Full Version : 67 Z28 project

Mark Sheppard turned me onto this 67 RS Z28 a couple weeks ago. It has been apart since about 76. Orig owner is still around. Sold new in Fresno Ca and was there till Sunday when I drug it home. I'm the 3rd owner. Cool options are shoulder harness seatbelts, fold down deluxe interior, headrest seats, wood wheel, console guages, cowl plenum air cleaner. Has all 5 DF wheels with rings and caps. Now if you all think back to when I sold the hipo 5 blade fan for big bucks and later on the high buck fan clutch....I am missing them for this car...ARRGH !!!! It figures. I will now probably have to pay more than what I sold them for. The car dropped a valve under warranty and got a CE block and one head replaced under warranty.

This is the second project R/S Z/28 that my buddy has sold. I sold him a gold 67 R/S Z/28 years ago that I needed to sell to buy our house by the beach. That car ended up in Hawaii. His brother knew about this car since we were in high school in the late 70s and Mark said he would never sell it. It was not an easy decision but he knew that he could not put this car together the way it deserved. After the El Camino fiasco I am so thankful that Charley bought this car because I know it will get put together the right way.

A couple of other neat things about this car. It has power steering and a rear mounted antenna. Did you notice how clean the cut is around the shifter hole in the tunnel and I belive it still has the original muffler with the original tail pipes. This is going to be so neat sitting next to the pace car when it is done.

One last thing and I will shut up for awhile. The idea of Charley documenting the build of this Z/28 and Bill Rose documenting the L/78 el camino build is like I died and went to heaven. These are 2 cars from my past that I have the strongest memories of. The CE motor that Charley received with this Camaro was rebuilt by Joe Bogsian many years ago. Joe had a long history with Ford building 4-cam indy motors. I am certain that Charley will be pleasantly suprised with that motor.

Charley, based on your pictures, it would appear that the "302" sticker might be correct on a 1967/1968 cowl plenum air cleaner lid. Contrary to what I had always thought. It sure looks like that sticker has been on your a/c lid a long time! What are your thoughts? Tex

Charley, could you get a photo of the CE assembly code that should be stamped on the starter flange. I've got a small data base of CE blocks started. I have one very close to this that was said to be in another 67Z.

First thing...L34pace...my JL-8 car has a CE block if you want the numbers from it...dont know if you are looking for 69 info also...
Second thing...CONGRATS Charley on an awesome car....Im sure it will be even more awesome when it is done...
Third thing...I was talking to my little bro about this car and asked why I have 3 67 Z-s and not one has the original motor , trans, or rear, and yours has the trans and rear still intact. I dont know if its true, but his response was that the west coast guys must drive like pu***s....and us East Coast guys know what these cars were meant for...hehehe...just kiddin out there ok... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif
but seriously.....Awesome car with most of the original drivetrain and parts!!!!!!!!!! Congrats again!!!!

It will be interesting to see if the block in this car is a tonowanda assembled piece. If it has an assembly code stamped at the started flange we should be able to confirm. According to the CE sequence structure of Charley's block this should be a Tonowanda assembly. I was scratching my head when I ran across the other 67Z CE assembly with Tonowanda sequence structure. (attached photo in my last post) I've yet to run into a small block CE warranty piece in a camaro that has other than Flint data untill these two 67 Z's turned up. I have 68 and 69 Z's with confirmed Flint CE assemblies. The next question would be why the 67 Z's at Tonowanda for warranty work?

Charley what is the story on the aluminum motor? It looks like it has bolt holes on the ends of heads for the later style alt. brackets. How about running this with a very early cross ram and a cross ram cowl plenum air cleaner set up? I do not see how this could be any tricker. It would be like the semi hemi yellow 69 Z/28.

Is the AL X-motor a 302?
What did the AL blocks in the Grand Sports look like?
Charley Lillard
10-07-2008, 08:42 AM
Aluminum parts were acquired by someone in about 72. Maybe they fell off a truck ? I was told Jack Podell also had a set of aluminum heads like these that he used to have for sale. They also had the bolt holes but were from the 60's. Mark..Would you now hook me up with a early crossram and early crossram cowl plenum ? It is starting to sound like my old 67 RS Z with the Xram.

Damn Charley!!!!
I can find stuff, but YOU...
You can really find things I havent seen before!!!!
Would LUV a nice detailed write up of that motor!!!
No 0-code for that block.
Is it dated????
Any similarities to the 0-code Can-Am blocks, etc that were prototyped???
That's a first for me on a SBC Intake with this coding!

Charley Lillard

No dates on the block, just the 366298 #. The block was virtually a raw casting with only pan rails machined. Apparently when a block is machined they start by doing the pan rails and reference everything else from there. The block has traveled all over the country having stuff done to it. It is a very rare Dude.

Anything similar to the ZL1???
I recall the Delta Bolts on the main caps on mine when I had it.
Any external blockside stampings that distinguish this relative to any GM aluminum motor you been exposed to???
Charley Lillard
10-07-2008, 09:21 AM
It looks like a GM bowtie block and has a bowtie but they use a small diameter truck type oil filter. This is cast for a full size one.
Seeing as it's original block is long gone,I would opt the experimental SB alloy & use that cowl plenum AC.That would be killer!

I overheard a guy at work (I work for GM) talking about aluminum SBC blocks that were cast in the late 60s for the Chaparral cars. In fact he built a gorgeous replica with one of these GM aluminum SBCs, I think a 331 or 377 or some other high winding deal. Will see if I can get any more info out of him.

Charley it would be pretty cool if you ran the alum motor on a dyno with the correct '67 single intake and carb and played with it on the dyno and see what you get out of it tuneing.
then do the same with the CE motor you have with correct iron heads singe intake and carb and see which motor pulls the best...that would make for a neat story and probably get picked up by one of the magazines.
oh and lots of vids in the dyno room http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif.
now get back to work slacker. & run a single carb on the car, everyone has a cross ram these days..whoopeee.

Charley, it is odd but I came accross 3 crossrams with no part numbers that I was told were for 67 Z/28 when I was looking for a 69 Z/28. I have only seen crossram cowl plenum air cleaners in pictures. I understood most of them were modified for mor airflow because they were designed for a restrictive air cleaner. Were the original ones made out of plastic or steel?

Not to hijack this thread a bit, but I thought it would be a good time to throw this out there since the topic is similar....If anyone here can help...Ive been ´dreaming´of putting together one of my 67 Z´s with the NOS MO 302 Smokey motor that I have...I have planned on using the NOS hemi 302 heads that I have with the early 68 dated service JL-8 rear that I have...but the only part I am still missing is the intake base for the Hemi heads...(a real needle in 100 haystacks)....maybe someone out there can help...I have a few rare parts left that I would be willing to trade also....or cash of course...
the other question...Im not sure if to use the last cowl dated 67 Z (white w/standard interior)which is basically no option plus shoulder belts..the motor is dated perfect for the car...I was gonna make it as a Trans Am type car...or use my Red w/black vinyl and deluxe interior well optioned RS Z....I have original radio and heater delete that I planned on using also....I just love that RS look...
But, still searching for that intake base...maybe someone could make me one?? Any ideas...connections??? Thanks Charley..and Yenko.net....
If I get my car together someday Charlie, Ill run you with your experimental alum motor, ok!! Best of luck with it!!!

I had a 70-1/2 R/S Z/28 that I used for towing. It had a weld in frame hitch and 4:10 gears. I drove it on a 600 mile round trip to Los Angeles one week end to pick up an Austin mini cooper. It pulled would pull a trailer real well but I had to stop at every Union 76 gas station I saw along the way.

What is this switch?? My 71 Lt-1 Corvette has something similar....just never knew what it did?

No this was when I lived up in Fresno by this 67 Z/28. When I moved down to Long Beach I brought the 70 Z/28 with me. All I could afford was to live in an apartment complex where about 2 cars were being stolen a week. I did not want the car to get stolen and parted out so I sold it instead. Sure enough in the next months Hemmings the 70 Z/28 was for sale for twice what I sold it for.

Unfortunately JM has the 63 o-dash experimental aluminum heads at his shop for some repairs...I have tried to get to his place for some other work i need done on some other parts, but he is a very busy man...When i get there i will take some pics and post them,...hopefully next week.......and the hemi x-ram intake has ports more similar to a Ford Boss 302 than anything I have found...I was thinking of trying to have an intake made by cutting the top half of a "production" x-ram base and mating with a custom-made type intake bottom....anyone know a very very good aluminum intake fabricator??? It would have to be a real good custom job. any ideas??? thanks

Orig owner stated the cowl plenum air cleaner was in the trunk and the headers were supposed to be but weren't.
Does that mean the headers were never included with it at all upon delivery,or that they were in a different place other then the trunk?

Mine is a Cali 68 RS/Z and you can see it is very similar to Charlie's; cut further down just slightly past the firewall seam to the floor of the cowl area. This car has been down since '79-80 timeframe. Interesting stuff.

I am so glad Charley got this car and restored to perfection. Nobody else had the vision to put it together this well. Charley has invited me up north to see the car in person someday and I will do everything I can to bring with me the brothers that owned the car before him.
