Remarks: Hustle Muscle pulls muscle cars. CNW train #483 was a Janesville-Twin Cities manifest, seen here from the top floor of the old CNW depot with what appear to be Chevy Novas fresh from the Janesville GM Plant, slated to close 12/23/08 after 85 years of auto/truck production. Today, WSOR trains pass this spot on the way north to Madison, via ex-Milwaukee trackage. Mark and Mike will present their CNW Wisconsin Div. program 10/25 at the NWI-NRHS show at St. Marks Lutheran Church, Rockford IL., 7pm. RP.net viewers in the area are most welcome to attend.

Remarks: CNW train #576, with 5 loads and 46 empties (left) readies for departure to Proviso from South Janesville yard on a Sunday afternoon. It is viewed from atop a loaded autorack of 1970 Camaros fresh out of the GM plant at Janesville. At one point, GM employed over 7,100 (1978), and by 2005 over 16 million vehicles had been produced there. GM will cease all production at this plant 12/23/08, ending nearly 85 years of auto/truck building in J'ville. This is one of over 270 CNW images the Nelsons will show on the huge screen at the NWI-NRHS meeting in Rockford, IL., 10/25/08, at St. Marks Lutheran Church, railpictures.net viewers in the area are invited to this free show which begins after 7pm.

cool pictures! nice EMD locomotives too (I used to be a field service engineer for those, so had to take a closer look). I would imagine there are a lot more unpublished pictures like these, those diesels would do a nasty ploom if they sat too long, and it may have made sense keeping the cars next to the locomotives. I am surprized they did not put a top on those carriers. when i traveled the lines around chicago, the sheer number of people taking pictures of trains would surprise you, it was like at every few crossings someone was taking a picture.

Great photos. I enjoy looking at photos from the muscle car era. I have just one question though. I thought all 2nd gen Camaros were assembled at either Norwood or Van Nuys. Were any ever assembled at Janesville as per the photo caption?

Hey Darren... do you know if your car originally had Z21 style trim? It is pretty clear the car in the train photo has Z21 and I'm only asking because im over zealous on your behalf. What a cool photo!

Dan, I was thinking that there was no tail light trim. I thought if it had it it would be more prominent. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Forget the the Vehicles,,, There are appx over 10,000hp on the point of that TRAIN!
Awesome SD-45's (EMD-GM units) 645 Cu/in per Cylinder 16 cyl Monsters = Maintenance hogs!!
Talk about grunt http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Hustle Muscle was a special unit manufactured for the 'Great Northern', the side of unit was painted as such. The Detroit auto makers were not the only Horse power war in town. GE, EMD, Alco etc were duking it out in the race to put the most HP in a given locomotive. To say the least bigger is not better when it comes to tractive effort. Many SD45's were later de-rated from 3,600hp to the maintenace friendly 3,000 hp 12 cyl version,,,,he, he, out with the L72 and in with the L35

These are very neat pictures

Years ago they made it into a Hotel, and now used as dorms by the University of Akron.

They crashed a train load (350-400) of new BMW's all headed to the Port of Charleston SC for Export a few years back here in SC... ouch!

370 BMW's were damaged last Jan when a carrier ship tipped in port, in Jersey City.
The 370 cars included the 1 series, the 3-series as well as the new M3 models. 70 of the damaged cars
were a total loss and had to be crushed, as these cars had damage to the engines and the structure of
the car. The rest of the 300 cars were taken to the service stations to get it fixed.
