I assume you mean "known" (to whom?) and not "produced," right? Because when it comes to Mopars, you can't combine options to arrive at a production figure. In total, 41 US-spec Challenger R/Ts were built in Panther Pink, plus an unspecified number of Canadian and export-spec cars.

ANDY M
10-28-2008, 08:06 PM
The Shaker hood is very rare on these cars, because when Chrysler crash tested this conbination of a Challenger with the Shaker hood, they found out that the hood had a nasty habit of coming through the windshield and killing the driver in a frontal crash. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
Good reason to change the hood design, especially after it went into production. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
'Cuda has a slightly different set-up, no worries there.

Guys, Thanks for the compliments.

442w30, my known information came from the late Daniel Banker, he was really into the FM3 Challengers, I believe his numbers may have came from Galen Govier. For at least 10 years now 5 1970 FM3 SHAKER HOOD 440-6 Challengers are known to exist, three 4-spds and two auto's.
I'm curoius as to where your total of 41 FM3 Challenger R/T's comes from?

I know of Daniel, and it's a shame of his recent passing.

I never really cared for "known to exist" stuff because not one person has all the knowledge.

But the number "41" comes straight from Chrysler's records. Even Galen says 41! But - remember - that's only for US-spec R/T hardtops. It doesn't include other models like R/T SE or R/T ragtop, and it doesn't include cars outside the US border. There probably are another 20 out there, I imagine.

My friend has one of those 41, but his has the pink stripe. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

Are the louvers factory installed? Was the car coded for a vinyl top or were the louvers added by the original owner later? I always thought that the vinyl top was a mandatory option when you ordered louvers because the metal edges of the louvers would tend to dig into the paint and the vinyl top would prevent that from happening?
(I'm not nitpicking - just curious - I love how the car looks without a vinyl top - it's breathtaking.) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I remember trying unsuccessfully for years to buy an original pink/white 440-Six Pack 1970 Charger R/T-SE with factory sunroof back in the 1980s. It was in Saskatchewan but somebody else ended up getting it. I love that color.

Bruce
10-31-2008, 08:20 AM

Yes the louvers are factory installed, the fender tag actually lists them twice. And tag also is stamped FM3 in both top and bottom. As does both production broadcast sheets.
There is a rubber seal that goes around the area where paint contact is.

Thanks for the nice comments.

We (Bruce, Rex, Mark-Dreemz, Don Spiro, Shaun) all met at the Casa Grande air strip in October for the photo shoot and had a blast. Rex is a real colorful character with a great memory. Funny thing tho, he did confirm that the girls swarmed him like nobody's business, but he never called it Panther Pink as Chrysler did, he had another name for what kind of pink that color was http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif!!

Anyway Bruce is a talented, humble artisan who accomplished an outstanding job on the restoration. The car will make you stagger when you see it. We can all wish him well at the OE judging at the Mopars on the Strip event in March.

Well done dude! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif Enjoy your accolades for another 5 minutes and then start detailing that puppy for the judges! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

From one author to another, tremendous article Sam! The cover no less. I love it when a cars story is rediscoved and told start to finish. Rex seems to have a way with works of his own "The color of the car was part of its power.", too cool.

Bruce, kudos for taking a stunning car and giving it the restoration it deserves and then taking the tine to reuinite her with her orginal owner.

There is nothing more satisfying in this car hooby than man and machine brought together, reliving the moment. Well done one and all. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif
