I am considering a 67 SS427 Impala. This car is a California produced car with NO docs. I am not familiar with these cars. Can anyone help me with how to validate if this car is a real SS427? In advance, thanks.

I saw and met with the new owner of an original paint, unrestored red/red bucket seat console, highly documented 60K mile '67 SS427 4 speed Impala this weekend and took some photos. Will post tonight. Am no expert, but Peculiarities that set it apart from other Impalas: It has the SS427 emblems on the front fenders and the one yr only SS427 hood. Wonderful time capsule. No ps/ no pb!

Wonder why it was ordered that way? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif

No expert but maybe someone else can chime in

I think the 427 had a 4D on the trim tag.

Be cautious as not all the plants used that code on the cowl tag, California being one of them. If it is present, it does represent the Z24 package however. If it is not there is does not necessarily mean it is not an SS427.

Car has a build sheet (found by current owner) and dealer invoice (other docs too - can't remember). Will ask about the TT, altho, I took very hi res photos and under hood shot may reveal TT info.

Are you aquainted with a white ext./ red int. 4 speed car in Wisconsin?

Tim,
I know the car you are talking about and I am not sure whether it is the real deal. It has a restamped block, and I believe the seller said it was a South Gate CA car, so therefore it would not have 4D on the tag. So you would have to look for the tag to say L36 on it to mean it's a real Z24 car, and I'm unsure whether it does or not.

Sam,
I think I heard about that car somewhere. It was purchased via craigslist and came with a bunch of NOS parts if I recall. I think it was a Canadian car. Looking forward to seeing the pics!

Steve - you are correct. Been out here in Apache Junction for years. I forgot that it was a Canadian car too. He showed me the Canadian report. How did you hear of this car? I am embarrassed to say that I have no close ups of the engine bay - got distracted (doesn't take much) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif I'll be staying in touch with the owner. He is less than 10 miles from my home. Anyway, here she is:

Holy cow, I didn't realize it was that nice of a car. What a great find! I heard about the car from my buddy Jon Krogh, who may have been in touch with the current owner when he first picked it up, not sure. Great pictures! I hope the thing will be kept original. Most Canadian cars are nowhere near THAT clean lol

There are some ruff areas wrt the paint not shown in photos. Everything on car works including the clock! For the time being the owner plans to keep the car original. A real sweetheart of a car!!

Sam,

If it's "been in Apache Junction for years" he hasn't had it registered for very long http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif Nice looking car, though http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Bill - not sure what you are saying. Newest owner has only had it for about 2 months. Car hasn't been driven for years and the new owner just registered it, hence the new style license plate (no raised alphanumerics).

I see now....been in AJ for years but just went to a new owner recently. Yes, I was questioning the new style license plate, but that explains it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Steve - don't know for sure why the SW gauges are there (look nice don't they), but this car was bot to race at the track and I expect the owner wanted more reliable than GMs best for systems monitoring http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I actually like the standard impala side moldings I think they break the lines of the car nicer.

Carl - the "standard impala side moldings" that you refer to I remember talking to the owner and looking on the Canada doc and commenting about the option code for the molding. maybe it was a standard option on an ss427 but I don't think it was standard equip. I am way in over my head so don't ask any tuff questions. Steve!!!!!!!(Tarrytownss427s)

Its supposed to be Tahoe Turquoise, might be a little light??

It's a funny color, it looks dramatically different depending on the light.

There's a guy up north from here I dont know if he is a member here (up by milwaukee somewhere) who hase a Tahoe Turquoise 67 SS427 vert!!!! I know he has been involved with 67 427's for a while.

It a beautiful car. Here's a photo of it http://inlinethumb32.webshots.com/38879/1375616976059767225S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1375616976059767225MXYoop)

The 68 SS427 belongs to Arnold Boris.

Rick, the 68 is actually my dad's car. It came out of Baldwin Chevrolet, and is Island Teal. Arnold's car is Grotto Blue, and he did add a similar stripe to the hood of his car which makes them look very similar.
Another interesting note, I recently bought some car papers off ebay and in with it was a window sticker from a 68 plain Impala which had factory hideaways, as well as some other interesting options. It was a company car for somebody at Fisher Body Div. Janesville WI.

Sorry, my bad. I was looking at my SS427 information and had the wrong photo labled to the wrong car. Both very sweet cars regardless. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

That window sticker would be very interesting if it is fact real as that has been an ongoing debate for many years and it would nice to be able to prove that you could in fact get the hideaways on the Impala. Just like the claim that you could not get a 335 hp 427 in a 69 and disc brakes were mandatory on the SS427. In 1981 I bought the engine out of a junk yard 69 SS427 Impala and retrieved the POP out of the glove box. It was a very plain and unmolested green/green car with all the SS emblems BUT with a 335 hp engine and power drum brakes. Again, this was in 1981. The car had been there quite some time as well.

I'll work on a picture of the window sticker. It's not the actual sticker, but rather a very old photocopy of the original which was never glued to the window. Judging by all the weird codes and writing on it, it is no doubt a copy of a real sticker. It also came with the protecto plate which had a COPO coded engine and trans. The guy who had the stuff found it in a 66 Riviera that he bought at a police auction. It's really nice to see some proof finally! Perhaps it was only something an exec. could get..

Wow, thats interesting about that 69. Do you still have the POP from it?

Rick,

Don't you think the odds are far greater that it was just a plain Impala that someone chose to put 'SS' emblems on? I mean, all 69 Chevrolets with Super Sport equipment were very prominently advertised as having disc brakes as standard equipment, and to the best of my knowledge, there are no known 1969 Nova SS, Camaro SS, or Chevelle SS cars that had drum brakes. Certainly by the mid- or late- 70's, people were slapping SS or Z28 emblems on many cars that were not originally equipped as such.

I gotta chime in here, with my ancient memory about my car.

I owned - in 1975 - a Z24 optioned 427 Impala SS 'vert. Even then, there were many arguments started as a result of how my car was optioned.

It was a 4-gear car, power windows, A/C, AM/FM radio, full gauges, L-36[as I recall 385 HP in 67/68, I have owned both] with 3.70 positrac - a 1 owner car when I bought it AND it did have hideway lights! Buckets/console and some goodies my feeble old memory can't come up with, at present, I am sure.
