I looked at a car today that a fellow is interested in selling and I'm not sure of a fair price for it. He didn't offer an asking price and I wanted to research the value before I make an offer.

It's a 1972 Olds W30 442 S coupe. A true X code (HP 455 not available with AC) automatic car.
It's a 30,000 car that's white/black and certainly one of the most well preserved cars I've seen. It's really a gem with original paint and interior.

Of course, it has the W25 hood that all W30's came with. It also has the optional steering wheel and gauges along with tilt steering wheel and AM/FM radio. I've always liked the '72 Olds and the X codes are pretty neat. This has to be one of the best I've ever seen. Any feedback?

That is not enough info to go on to narrow down a price. The 72 442 were an appearance option on the Cutlass and as such there was no package that included various options, you ordered the car Ala carte. If the car is low miles and numbers matching and original as you state I would place a value between $35,000 and $50,000. The state of the market is not strong right now and you are in a bargaining position.
In terms of value year by year the 70's are worth the most, add more if a 4 speed, add a lot more if it is a convert. Next valuable are 71's under the same conditions. 72's fall a little lower but are much easier to document because of the vin.
Show me some photos and I might be able to suggest a closer price.

Canuk, thank you for your input. I don't have photos and don't know if they would help because the car would look wonderful in the shots. Paint is original and flawless, the interior is, also. If this were a '72 Corvette, it would Benchmark without question. It has an X in the VIN. I think your high estimate of $50,000 is in line.
