Lots of guys are duplicating "Day Two" cars lately, but here is one that was done "back in the day", lace paint and all! Many of you may remember this car from when I rescued it a few years back. Although it may not look like it, about 500 hours of labor was spent making it a turn key car that retains its "fresh out of storage" look!

A few items of note about this very historic car:

It has been reported that Elvis bought this car new and let the Memphis Mafia paint it one night after a few too many drinks and some of the King's special "candy pills". It has been claimed that paint left over from the Jungle Room at Graceland, along with remnants of shag carpet from the same, were installed by the old boys on that fateful night. Upon seeing it in the bright light of day after they sobered up, they realized the error of their ways so tastefully modifying the King's favorite GTO and had to dispose of it. As we know, the King was of questionable taste and wouldn't have appreciated a true work of art such as this. Regrettably, I can not substansiate these rumors as Elvis is in Germany and unavailable for comment.

However, I have it on good authority that this vehicle does have ties to the Reagan administration. As it was told to me, in 1982 Nancy Reagan was looking for a vintage GTO to use for her First Lady duties outside of the White House. The former owner of this car sent Nancy a picture after seeing her wanted ad in HMN. She immediately jumped out of her chair and exclaimed "Just Say No to Drugs!!" to which Ronnie said, "Hey, Babe, that's a great slogan to use in the war on drugs!" The rest, as they say, is history as shortly thereafter Nancy launched her "Just Say No" campaign in 1982. Just think of how many young lives this historic GTO's lace paint job has saved!

Check it out for yourself here:

This car is available to continue making history for a new owner, famous, elected, or just an average Joe Plumber type http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, and if you rely on the rumored celebrity and presidential connections above please ask me about the package deal I am offering of this car and some ocean front property in Arizona, just in time for the January auctions! Less than 5 miles from the Pavillions as well http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kidding aside, an incredible car priced well below what I have in it due to going overboard on the drivetrain and mechanical resto! Please use the link above for a complete (factual) description of the car.

Price: $35,000; 5% discount for paid SYC members except Charley.

The semi round paint spots on the side lace are called freak dots. You blow then on with an air brush, and fan em out a little. Work best with Hendrix, Schlitz, and laquer fumes. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Now, back to the Goat. I used to do that kind of paint work on motorcycles. Lace panels, string lines, acetylene smoke trails, freak drops, fish scales, ghost flames, even some murals. Crazy times then, but I'd go back to it in a minute. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I was looking for a '66 or '67 GTO in 1981, & called on a local ad for a low mile, mint, 4-speed '67, asking price $4500.00--which was a lot at that time (I ended up getting a mint Silver '66 in Arkansas for 3k--but that's another story). My wife & I went to look at it in neighboring Maywood, IL, the Goat being owned by a Maywood policeman. It was a fantastic car, originally blue, with a killer custom paint job like this one--even had a longhorn skull painted on the hood! More scallops & flames, etc, then should have been legal. Must have been something when it was 1st done, but in 1981, let's just say it was a little too wild for me. I often wonder whatever happened to it.

I would like to express my appreciation to you, Mr. Comer, for causing me to spit my Pepsi onto my computer screen in laughter.

Oh...btw, quit picking on those AMC's, or I'll handcuff your leg to a table in the Nickey display next week.

Bob,

Pepsi? This late at night? Next weekend is when you'll be pulling the all-nighters keeping everybody happy at VF and need the Pepsi at 9pm http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

You know a good old Wisconsin boy like me has, what do the kids say these days, "nothin' but love" for the Kenosha Kadillacs. Heck, I've owned enough of them and my shop is across the street from the old AMC plant and attached to the old AMC executive parking lot!

Some day you NEED to get your a## up here so I can take you to the famous Valent's tavern next to my place. Litte known historic part of AMC history. Bar opened at 5am and old man Valent would trade factory workers drinks for car emblems swiped from the line. Whole place is covered in AMC emblems and my now-deceased "mentor" who worked at AMC in the late-40's-early 60's had plenty of tales of the workers going to Valents for a few quick drinks before they went to work!

Old man Valent passed away few years back but his wife and daughter still cook lunch every day for the customers. Come up on a Friday for the fish fry. I think the hot oil helps kill the germs and maybe gets rid of some of the hair in the food. Good stuff!

Now go tune up a Schwinn to ride around the show http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, and I have no problem getting locked to the Nickey booth. Always have a good time helping Beth gain up on Stefano http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

See you next Friday!!

I still have this killer, great factory color combo, 100% numbers matching original factory engine and drivetrain, 4 speed 67 GTO for sale. Maybe I'm missing something, but even in today's market it seems like a great deal to me as some guys are still paying $15k for basket case GTO's that get dragged from junk yards!

If the paint is a little too groovy for you, this car is an easy paint and detail job away from being a great OE appearance GTO.

I need the room - I should have my head examined but the first paid SYC member with $25k can own it! Fly in and drive it home OR for an extra $500 I will have it delivered to SCR in a few weeks!

Jim,

I wasn't alive in the year where any meaningful "before" pics could have been taken http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There has been no (as in zero/none) paint or interior work done, other than complete disassembly to clean everything and put it back together. When the engine was rebuilt we did our best to make the new paint on it have patina, and I replaced the awful 1980's M/T valve covers with original 67 GTO chrome ones, and also a "seasoned" Cal Custom air cleaner as you can see.

Other than a good bath nothing has been done to the paint in over 20 years. I'm sure waxing it would make it nice and shiny, but it looks so cool like this I left it alone.

Hope this answers your question.

the "awful" M/T valve covers are as much of the "charm" of this car as is the paint, 8 track, wheels and fuzzy arm rests, *I* would have left them on ... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jim,

I hate to disagree, but, the car had the original chrome valve covers and a Cal Custom-style air cleaner when it was parked in the barn in the early-1980's. Sometime in the 20+ years of storage somebody stole the valve covers, air cleaner, horn button, and radiator fan. So when I bought the car the seller had thrown on a nasty set of old M/T covers that post-dated the original Day Two build by at least a couple of decades. The engine was never run with the M/T covers, let alone was the car driven. To me, they didn't belong and I took them off. I also tossed out the two utility trailer tires somebody had put on in the last decade to roll the car around on, they had nothing to do with the original build either http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Regardless, if you send $25k you can have your choice of valve covers - the M/T ones are here on the shelf collecting dust http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'm happy to swap them out.

Best regards,
Colin

ok then, having had no idea of the history of the car, I would have only assumed that the M/T valve covers went on on day 2, as they WERE (and still are), a popular mod.

all the day 2 items are what makes some of these cars so unique, very few were left stock, whether it be exhaust or wheels, air cleaners, etc

I find day 2 cars more interesting than a cookie cutter resto, but that is just me, I LIKE patina

but I am not in the market, sorry
