View Full Version : ET mag selection for my '62...Opinions????

Verne_Frantz

I had a friend do some photoshop magic for me to help me decide what look might be best when I put the old ETs on the blue '62. He dubbed in a blackwall tire and colored the spokes.
So, since I respect your opinions, here goes. Take a look at these 4 selections: Natural, light gray, med gray and dark gray and let me know what you think. Try to imagine all 4 on the car.

Natural:

Light gray
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/VerneFrantz/VLFPrivate/vernetirelitegray.jpg

Medium gray
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/VerneFrantz/VLFPrivate/vernetiremediumgray.jpg

Dark gray

Thanks! .........Decisions, decisions, decisions. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif I'm kinda partial to the natural (old and un-refined as it is) but I'm curious what you guys think.

Polished rim and natural (rough texture) spokes. Hard to improve on the way they came out of the box.

Vern I painted my ET mags with some rattle can black paint with silver flake. It looks like a dark gray but it sparkles like crushed opal. Mark

I like the light gray with the dark blue and the chrome on the side of the car. I have ET's on my car and used the rattle can color "steel wheel silver". I was really happy with the look. You can see a close-up of my wheels in the members rides. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/367614/an/0/page/0#Post367614

My vintage Americans were a little stained so I painted the center area. A little too glossy for my liking but they clean up easier now. I used a color with a slight gold tint to try to replicate the early ARE coloring.

I'll probably put the tach back on the steering column where it was originally. There are no extra holes up on the dash; he made a bracket that used an existing inst cluster hole.

Verne,

LOOOVVE you car. It's like a car I had back in 1979. Mine was a bench with the spaghetti shifter. Unfortunately there are only a couple photos of it that I know of. After I got married and fell on some hard times I reluctantly sold it. It was a very sad day indeed.

Heres one of the few photos of it at Indy at the Car Craft Nationals.

Carl,
Sorry to hear you had to sell yours. ( I know the remorse because I'm selling a '61 that I really wanted to bring back). Your old car looks like Nassau Blue, just like mine. (personal taste, but probably the best color in '62! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif)

Looks like yours had 2x4s. VERY bad situation there. Drinks TOOOOO much gas. NO good for commuting.

On a serious note.........when mine is back on the road, you are most welcome to share the experience with me (limpy shifter and all) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I was at the 79 Nats. I was 17 at the time. I was just looking at my old photos but couldn't find your car - thought I might get lucky. I was actually parked in that same area with 3 or four other pace cars,

That was the year I brought my 69 Z11 pace car and my brother brought his Daytona yellow 69 SS396 Camaro. I was a hellacious trip. He went through two clutches, a camshaft, 3 rocker arms and other assorted crap in the 1600 mile roundtrip. We had to do a cam change in the hotel parking lot during the event. We eventually got into a fight after he had a little too much fun with the motel maid and got us kicked out (she left with him! - kind of a "Dirty Mary-Crazy Larry" movie script, I know). I left him somewhere along the way and drove back solo. We both took different routes back to CT and ran right into the odd-even license plate gas rationing fiasco. It took him a week to get back, only getting 5 gallons per fillup on alternate days. Oh those were the days! (We still get along http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Oh, Verne. My vote is for the natural aluminum finish. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I took my '69 Road Runner to a CC Street Machine Nats at Indy one year (in the early '80s). Worst car experience of my life. The participants blocked off streets and formed a cattle chute and made each car do a burnout in water and bleach. They stood right next to the cars and threw beer on them if you didn't please them. The cops were out of control too and acted like thugs. They banged on fenders with their billy clubs to control traffic. I walked from my motel to witness one of the larger burnout fiascos and the cops showed up each with a K9 and proceeded to "clear the street". I got clubbed in the back of the head while trying to cross the parking lot back to my motel. I turned to look at him and the veins were popping out of his neck. He was holding his German Sheppard with one hand and had his club raised in the other. He said, "just try something, PLEASE just try something". I kept my hands in my pockets to avoid possible provocation and they made me run the rest of the way back. Left the next morning for home. I figured it might not get any "better" than that and I didn't want to stay around to see if it got worse. Never attended another one.

I would have rather had to change a cam in the parking lot. That would have been a LOT more fun.

As for the voting, thanks guys http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif Natural is the winner by a 2-1 margin. That's pretty much the way I wanted to go, so I feel better now.

That must have been 1980 in Indy. I have the photos of the Indiana State Troopers walking down the median carrying 4-foot long billy clubs. (I'm not exagerating here, they were literally skinny Louisville sluggers). That was the year I brought my orange Superbird.
