Are there any differences between the two balancers? 302 1969 and 70-72 LT1 Z28? Pics please? I think I may have 2-3 of them and want to ID them.
Thanks in advance
Matt

The 1969 should have 7708 stamped on it somewhere. I THINK the timing mark in relation to the keyway position in different on the LT-1 engines as opposed to the 302. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

The 69 Z28 used a 7708 and the LT1 used a 7712. They look very close, but timing marks may be slightly different.

I don't believe the timing marks are different. They are both offset. The 69 Z balancer has the pronounced 3 fingers that go from the center out without a ring around the edge. (Fingers stand out on the balancer where the pulley is bolted.) I don't think you could have bought an assembly line balancer over the counter. The NOS ones were the new versions like the 1970 LT-1's and up. Page 46 in Jerry's book is a good illustration. I can't post pictures if my life depended on it! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Sam

I believe the over the counter is the 538 and the fingers are different as you state. The timing mark is about 10 degrees offset from the keyway on both the 302 and LT1.

The key ways do line up.

Probably an L79 balancer and or a 1967-68 Z/28 balancer. In 1969 the key ways were offset. The timing chain covers were different also between the years.

L79 engine option ended in 1968. This balancer is dated December of 1968 making it a 1969 balancer

Through 1968, the timing index line on the outer ring was exactly in line with the keyway; when the new long-water pump accessory drive came along in 1969, the timing index line was moved 10* counter-clockwise from the 1968 position, along with the tab on the timing cover. Attached photo shows both index line positions on the balancer.
