I'm curious.
Opinions ?
I would think that they would soften just like everything else .
Noticed a block /heads seller's current wares today on ebay, seems like HIS prices are going UP .
even at standard/ no sleaves, can a decked - rebroached ( broach marks don't look exactly correct to me - too fine ) early 67 351 casting bare block bring $8200 in todays economy ?
The CARS (435hp 67 vettes) wouldn't even go past $165 at big auctions (and that was a vert with very rare colors - papers and awards) over a year ago before the common folk realised the big fall was coming.
Is this kind of $ still being attained for these , or are they last gasp dreams ?

I think if anything the price of parts has increased. Hard to find original parts will always demand money.
As for cars, I am a firm believe original cars will keep steady money whereas the fake cars will start to crumble in value.

If the real stuff is softening, then the knockoffs are drowning.
I'm seeing & experiencing real parts & real cars hold their own if not rise to the top like cream over here,as opposed to repop/Taiwan parts and cloned/resto mod vehicles.

I've heard it repeated there are deals out "there"(where's there??) on good cars, nice cars that are NOT top line, NOM, no papers, but well constructed, nicely painted cars.......
I'd be interested in SEEING and READING about "Your" examples........????????

Parts have gone down a bit but still seem strong. They certainly have not gone up. I have seen a 15-25% price drop for the parts I have been selling over the last 3 months.

I agree the rare stuff will always command money but I doubt if eg. 480 or 499 dist will continue to bring in stupid money $2000+.
Remember there is a dwindling supply of real NOS stuff and a constant supply of cars, thats why part prices have been holding their value better than cars. That being said no story cars will always command strong money.

Theres still big piles of NOS parts out there, people still haven't brought it out yet. A month ago a friend asked me whats a NOS trunk weathestrip worth. I got 7 maybe 8 of them, and I go with the white tampon string?
But I been holding off selling on Ebay and swap meets for the last 2-3 years. Think about not about crazy money, but what good parts brought then and what they go for now. Like Nova lip mouldings, or Camaro voltage reg. mounting stuff.
I think this winter is going to be intersting because people are going to start to need money finally. I met up with someone last week who used to deal with high end Corvettes and Hemi cars. He closed his real estate office 14 months ago and sold his cars off shortly after, and now is selling off his parts and tools to make his house payment. Will the prices go up or down...who knows.

Classic case of supply and demand. Before the crash, People had money (they thought http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) and were willing to spend it on NOS parts that were not around. I would see a pattern of parts rarely up for sale until one of them came up and went for big bucks, then you started seeing a bunch more. That was demand affecting supply.
Now that demand had fallen off (the average joe doesnt have play money anymore) the amount of parts will shrink. I know I have not sold recently for that reason.
When it gets bad enough that people in need (lost job!) have to sell projects and parts, I think we will see prices going down. I think this is happening already. I seem to see a lot more projects on the market.
Soon might be the time to buy if your $$ are in good shape http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I know in the vintage Porsche world were I buy , sell and horse trade parts for my race cars that not much has changed. That market is also effected by the exchange/Euro that has dropped from 1.55 to 1.20 to the dollar but it seems the euro sellers just jack their prices up to balance it out.

I have not seen any real drop in the good pieces but the average stuff has dropped a little. The only bad thing I have seen is the amount of restamped pieces at the shows trying to be sold as the real deal.

All I can hope for is that the "non car guy" speculators will bow out, this should stabilize the prices.

Here's a current example relating to whether a '351' block bare is worth in $8k range.
auction listing for upcoming Goodings Scottsdale / jan:
Lot #5
"1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 Convertible
Chassis No. 194677S117456
Engine No. 194677S117456
Matching Numbers
Clean Example Of The Preeminent Stingray
Documented By The Original Tank Sticker
A Rare, California-delivered A.I.R. Optioned Car"
"The car has a number of desirable power options, such as power steering and power windows. It is one of few 1967 427/435 hp cars delivered new with the Air-Injector smog system (K19), which is still intact – a sign that this car’s first resident must have been from California. It was delivered new with the aluminum bolt-on wheels (N89), and still retains all five of them. This dashing Corvette convertible is finished in its original color, Marlboro Maroon, and similarly the interior is upholstered in its original black. The original tank sticker is still with the car, verifying these options. A thorough restoration was performed in the early 2000s in Texas by a marque specialist."
AUCTION ESTIMATE: $130,000 - $160,000
Without Reserve
------------------------------
When a done nicely very high optioned 1967 427/435hp roadster is bringing $150k at a major auction (orv estimated to).
A bare Block is not worth $8k - standard bore/early date or not !
It just does not pencil out.
I MIGHT pay $8k for one . IF it was the original block from a car I owned , and it still retained it's factory stamping.
But that's about it - until (or if) the cars return to a higher value.
Actually , it blows my mind that their (the cars) only bringing this amount now!

Just happened to come on this (which to me really nails it and actually relates to value of these blocks).
From Covette Forum (great read - "Really? Original Motor?".)
The last 2 lines of last thread post nails it and really says it all:
"You can not really restamp a block that can not be detected.
Matching numbers used to mean orginal engine. Now the only thing that means orginal engine is the words orginal engine."
-------------
(You can not really restamp a block that can not be detected) = earlier in thread:
"What seems to be forgotten is that all these restamps can be detected by the process that Al Grenning has developed (looking at the continuity of the broach marks)."
-----------------
So , In general (and as far as i'm concerned) all this BS block stamping of the last 25 years . Has really only done one thing - RUIN a bunch of good original blocks ability of being reunited with original bodies!!
If a block restamp can always be detected - then a dated block is worth far less $ than people believe.
It is truly only worth big $ - to the owner of a certain car - IF that car exists & it's original stamping is still present in the block.

If buying the right parts with correct dates makes you car more valuable and more factory correct, buy 'em if you can afford to do so and sell the stuff you have. Some of these hard to find parts, like a CX or CY trans for example, don't come up for sale very often, so you have to snag 'em when they're available.
Anybody have an MO 512 block Dec/Jan date? I have a #3904351 L71 block with H 29 6 date to trade http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
