Hi,

please look at here (http://www.vaultcars.com/78Corvette/78Vette.htm) and tell me:

- how can i find out is this an really original Pace Car and not only a fake?
- if the car not too cheap with this historical background? Thereīre "only" EUR18.366,00...

I like the Corvette... looks like very rare...

Or did i mislead me? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

It is safe to say it is real. Nobody is faking those cars that I know of. They don't bring much money so the crooks don't bother with them.

I couldn't open the attachment, but all Pace Cars were two tone black and silver with silver interior. If the trim tag verifies these interior/exterior colors, you have a Pace Car. If it doesn't have a trim tag or if the tag shows another combination, stay away.

One sure way....8th digit of VIN must be a "9" or no-go.

Correct. There was supposed to be 1 per Chevy dealer. I remember going to Bob McDorman's annual swap meet around that time. He had purchased a lot of these cars from other dealers. He had about 30 of them lined up on the lot.

-----I think Bob bought two from us at Classic Motors. We probably had about ten or twelve go thru the books. A few of them we never even saw as they got redirected to new owners who immediatly tried to flip them too........Bill S

A couple other items to note:

1 - The rear window looks to be tinted. It is not supposed to be tinted.

2 - There appear to be stereo speakers mounted on the back wall of the interior behind the seats and rear compartment. Those obviously are not original either.

3 - Based on how the glove box door fits, and how the cover below the steering column fits, my guess is the dash was replaced. It's probably your typical after market dash.

4 - The owners manual pictured 3 pictures from the bottom is not original for a 78 Pace Car. That owners manual is for a 78 Corvette 25th anniversary car. The original 78 Pace Car owners manuals look like the original one I have pictured below.

What the VIN # of the car? Whats the Trim tag info? 22K miles? And NOM? For the same roughly $25,000 USD I think you might be able to get a nicer more original 78 Pace Car. Just my two cents.

Hey Dave, thanks for the Infos and thanks for the very interesting link...

I donīt know the VIN.

But for roundabout 2weeks the Corvette costs $2000 more as now...

That sounds not good what you are say...

Looks like the Corvette is a tinkering Car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Well, here in Germany we have following Cars, for example:

I think these Cars are nothing unusual... and to expensive...

The Pace Car looks like exceptional, is a limited Car and maybe it add to the value...

-----Stroker,,,With apologies to the other poster, the tinted back window is of no real consequence as it can be pealed right off. As well, I can assure you that the stereo speakers in the rear are factory, absolutely! I cant tell you weather they came in the car or not but they are factory. Its rare to find a 1978 Corvette without those speakers as almost all 78s had upgraded factory radios that required them. The radio is not the original, however. The fit of the dash pieces is, as far as I am concerned, typical "factory fit". I would be very surprised if you could find any Corvette from that era with a dash that fit any better. These Corvettes were still being produced in St.Louis and there were glaring problems on that assembly line all thru this period. I used to wholesale this era of Corvettes by the dozens back in the early 80s and had to clean and detail most of them so Im fairly intimate with these interiors. Hope I havent irritated anyone too much with this post.....Bill S

-------Oh!!!,,,,,Air-cleaner top should be chrome on an L82 powered 78. I know as I used to take them for my trucks as they were the same size.

Hi Bill, thanks for your posting.

Important for me is if the Car grade up with original Parts or not.

And if the Car have any build ups, who was the guy that build up the Car, you know. Did he know what he do?

Iīm a Master Craftsman (currently seeking for a job in the u.s., incidentally) and i donīt like any faulty Tuning with any mistake Tuningparts...

Thatīs why are the detailed Infos so important for me...

Hereīs the answer from the Dealer:

Hello Mr. Hofknecht

I've attached photos of the trim tag and door stickers.

the VIN # is 1z8748s905160. Clean title in hand, will clear customs with no problems.

The owner drives the car fairly often - he rotates his collection, so he'll keep this car at his house and drive for a week or 2, and then do the same with another car. And, he has a part time mechanic who keeps his fleet operable. I've driven the car also, and it runs very nicely. It passed the California smog check, which is a good indicator that it runs well.

the engine isn't the original one, although it has all of the correct accessories. 22 k miles, not sure if original or not. The car is clean enough to indicate 22k, but I don’t have enough data to guarantee it.

Best Regards and Merry Christmas !
