Does anyone restore original oil caps with the S rivet?

Buy yourself a fresh one unless you feel the repop isn't correct. You can bet it will be considerably less expensive...even if someone does restore them.

Hi, Going through old posts looking for help with the same question. I'm wanting to re-chrome while keeping the original rivet appearance. Did you happen to find someone who does this service?

Why don't you look for a nos one? they are not that hard to find, Try a mercruser dealer, probably be in a 36- part area they used them in the early HP engines up to 90 for the HP465 and early HP500 so did Volvo and the jet pack suppliers, I might still have a nos one I would need to look but I have had quite a few in the Qicksiver package (mercruiser) alot of people looking for engine parts and hardware forget about marine they just got their parts from the OE's there were way more Big hp gm engines put in the marine field than ever dreamt on the street. The only reason alot of the factory stuff is still available is because of the big contracts with mercruiser and volvo.

Wow, new perspective, thanks. I’ve always thought these caps were rather elusive to find. Prior to posting, I did a Goggle searched and I remember seeing MerCruiser in the list. I just assumed they would supply only a functional replacement. Do you if theirs has the square configuration on the rivet bottom (the end that gets “smashed”, for lack of better terms), original profile, SM stamp, etc?
If you have one, please let me know.
I attached a couple pictures of the cap GM#3851735.
Thanks, Scott

Sorry, I'm still trying to figure out how to attach multiple files to a single post, but here to the top view.

They are the same, not a very good pic with the wires covering it, but I took these off a merc motor for beater, I use to have a bunch of them but a furnace explosion in my garage a few years ago took out about 300k in inventory parts and engines I had kept from Performance Marine. I have a few items left not sure if I have any new ones still, but I will take a look when I get a chance.

Will do Scott, no insurance did not cover the contents, I had just sold Performnce Marine, the new owners were going to take it in a new direction (they failed)so I kept alot of the inventory they did not need or want. I just Moved to Utah from Arizona I was robbed and my truck stolen Broke in my trailer stole parts (one claim) broke into dually stole stereo (second claim) the dirt bags found a set of keys to my other truck in dually and stole that truck (third claim) well my insurance cancelled me for 3 claims in a year then. I never recieved a notice, one month later it got cold turned on the heater in the garage about thirty min later boom it all went up alot of blocks complete engines two corvettes one chevelle a few motorcycles and alot of inventory, I contacted my insurance co they said i was cancelled and were nice to send me my notice then, got a attorney after a year of spending money on it I quit. the only good thing I have a judgement I can do nothing with on the thiefs that stole my stuff in the first place, The police got them a few days later.

Now that just plain sucks! I see/hear it time and time again. We pay premiums for years and years and then something happens that is completely out of our control and they stick it to us. I cannot believe they got away with not covering the explosion since they never formally terminated you. I guess that would be your word against theirs. Like some women, can't live with them, can't live without them....... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Guess, I should/could start a NEW thread, but HOW DO you insure misc, extra, loose auto parts stored inside your home, attached garage.
Every homeowners company I've asked told me NO, and auto insurance companies will only cover together/complete cars.
Thanks

Chuck - your answer as to why they don't cooperate is because they do not have to . How many insurance companies have you seen go under in the latest down turn http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif ? How many have asked for bail outs http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif ? They are very fat and apparently insulated from the poor economy and don't feel the need to address customer needs on such trivial matters which may affect their bottom lines. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Ahhhh, now that feels much better!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you have Collector car insurance on a vehicle(s) ask if they offer spare parts coverage, they usually give a set limit and you do not have to schedule each item. This affords some coverage. A standard Homewoner policy will not go near this stuff

Well I just did a thread about this and my time run out when I went to post it was canceled, I get a bit hot headed when I think of it! I will make a new one tomorrow and copy and paste it, I have been in business my whole life, I had a garage keepers policy on my home with inventory, on top of the other policies, it should have been covered they took their money. I will stop now or I will start to rant, and I do not want to steal from the thred this is another topic we will save it for that.

Oh, they will be asking for bail outs, as a matter of fact I think Prudential already has their hand out. I'd love to tell you about about when we put 1 million dollars of business on the books with that company for their auto home products and they invited us to their home office in NJ and the then vice president kept us in his office for three hours talking about what a great job we were doing and then said "oh, gosh. look at the time, gee we missed lunch at the cafeteria, maybe next time you come we can have lunch their. What a cheese-dick, he didn't wanna buy us lunch. I should have pulled that crappy argyle sweater over his head and kicked his ass down a flight of stairs (look, I was in New Jersey, thats almost acceptable business negotiations there) I'd say more but I do not wish to get sued. They (Prudential) set up a whole distribution system to get there numbers up so they could sell it ( to a large mutual company, whom I will not mention, that is interested in life, the pursuit of happiness and LIBERTY). I won't mention that company by name but it is also a turd and will NEVER be publically owned as there would be way to much scrutiny to the way that crap operation is run.
I am an insurance agent and the industry and the companies are full of idiots. Insurance agents and car mechanics have alot in common, the cost of entry into either field is cheap, and either the guy knows his trade and gives a "s" or he doesn't. I've had work done on my cars were I wanted to kill the mechanic and I've had work done that is beautiful.
Insurance is alot the same way, depends alot on the agent, if they know what they are doing and if they care. It also depends ALOT on how much risk you want to accept and how much you wanna pay in premiums.

Let's try and not change this thread to a rant, I made a remark on something and it is going out of text.

If someone finds one at a MerCruiser dealer, please post the MerCruiser part number! My guy said he couldn't help w/o a p/n or specific application (other than BBC).
Thanks - BCD.

I meant the MerCruiser p/n. They evidently don't use the GM p/n; that would make it too easy!
Thanks, BCD.

When ordering, It will have to be in the HP series for Mercruiser, probably in a group 36- all merc parts are in a group area first, I tried looking for some of my old books or fish, but I think they were all lost in the fire. I do know for a fact it will be correct application for a 1989 HP465 so if you order a oil cap for that application, that will be the replacement. now if you get a new one Im not sure what it will be as far as appearance, But I know just a few years ago they were still the correct ones.
