has anyone ever traveled Route 66 from Ca. to Chicago and back or visa versa? I'm looking for tips or ideas on anyone that may be able to share an itinerary, friendly repair shops along the way, sights to see and a timeline to try and get it all in. I got the wild idea last weekend after watching a Rte 66 DVD and it looked like it would be fun.

Funny as I just stumbled across this and read thru it. A family drove from Chicago to Amarillo and documented the trip very nicely. I want to do this one day myself.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

We did get to check out Rt 66 from Flagstaff to Joseph City, AZ, where the Jack Rabbit Trading Post is.

We didn't see a girl (my lord) in a flatbed Ford.
We did see a Dakota pick up back up into a (IIRC) Buell.

I may have opened a can of worms...I mentioned it to my 10 year old in passing and rather than laugh at the idea, she was all over it. When I grew up in Chicago my Uncle would take 2 weeks every year and make the drive to visit his brother in Huntington Beach. He would swap the 4:10's for 3:**'s in his 58 Vette and off he went...did it from the mid fifties all the way up the the early 80's in various period muscle. this is a small list of what he took..58 Vette, 60 Vette. 64 Impala SS, 66 GTO, 69 442...then he grew up and the muscle went away. I always heard the stories and it's kept me thinking about it for the last 10 years.
I guess there's no time like the present so I will continue planning and see if I can pull it off. I'm guessing mid June when school lets out and before it gets too hot. I'm guessing we'll meet a few more cars doing the same thing along the way. My plan is to pull into SuperDawg Friday night for dinner.
I hope others chime in and give some imputs on daily travel /mileage, places to stay and things to see or blow off. I'm starting to get excited. As a "plan B" the guys at Goodguys have 2 trips planned originating from Pomona...1 Pomona up to Puyallup, Wa in July...the other Pomona to ? someplace just north of Denver.
I'd appreciate any feedback
Charley....can I borrow a car the Red Witch?

No....but if you do enough Power Tours you might just see Route 66 again.
This year we start in Madison Wisconsin and end up in Bristol Tennessee. Starts June 6.

I'd guess any red blooded Car Crazy American kid growing up in the early '60s idolized Todd and Buzz and dreamed of running the Mother Road in a Roman Red solid axle Corvette. I know I did. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
I still think about it and probably will 'til the day I take that final ride in a Black longroof. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I've made the full trip probably 20 times, going back and forth to college, road trips, family vacations, etc. Much of it has not changed since I first saw it in the mid 80s. Me and a buddy drove the whole stretch in my old beater GS convertible, now there's an adventure. If you're interested I can put together a list of cool stuff to see.

If you've got the time and the inclination, stop at Williams, AZ and take the Grand Canyon Railway right to the village at south rim of the Canyon. Wonderful, scenic train ride and the kids eat it up. The train gets "robbed" by bandits who board the train on the way back to Williams.

The Wife and I did a 10 day trip from Cleveland, Ohio to Sedona Arizona this past summer. We picked up Rt. 66 in St. Louis & basically got on and off all the way to Flagstaff.
Some very cool stuff to see, but there are a not really a ton of things to do. A friend is a big fan of the CARS movie, so we found a web site and hit a bunch of the landmarks that were incorporated into the movie.
Don't forget to stop for a steak, and chili at the Big Texan in Amarillo (Need that drooling icon placed here!).
The whole trip was awesome. Spent a couple days in Sedona and did a side trip to the Grand Canyon (our first time) on the return trip.
We even took the dog. I thought that was going to a hassle but he did great and my wife had pet friendly hotels lined up all along the way.
There are somegood Rt. 66 guide bookds and check each states tourism site. My wife found some cool Rt. 66 maps with all of the cool stuff to see.
Good luck you'll have a blast!

how many days should I figure to get to CHicago? My girlfriend will be the co-driver and I'm guessing we'll take more time on the way there to take in the sights...I'm sure on the way back we'll probably take 80 across to cut off a bunch of time.

Jeff, Are you in the Bay area? If so have you considered the Lincoln Highway instead of Rte 66? Or you could take one of them out to Chicago, and the other one back.

I'm an hour south of San Jose. I appreciate the leads, I am going to buy the book and check it out. I hope to get this in over 9 days...I've never taken a 2 week vacation, this may be the first if this trip happens
