SOLD! After weeks of speaking with Kurt Burdick (brkyard)... yenko member, my SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan has a new home and owner. One of my concerns was making sure that the new owner retains the integrity and passion that goes with owning such a car. Kurt certianly has all these qualities....even though he is a "Cheese Head"....A there Kurt, how`s that piece of wood working for you? Joke from this morning.
Kurt came down this morning with a few of his buddies, John and Mike. Boy, do they know how to have a good time.
Kurt, Best of luck with my car. Hope to se you at Chevel-Abration 2009 and or my all 1969 Chevelle Party!

Thanks. I am really excited to have the car. Dan was a top notch seller even though he's a Bear fan. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
My plan is to continue the history of a "Day 2" race car. I plan on putting a 4-speed back in it and have a little fun at the track...which it deserves. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Thanks Rick. I think it will be a while before I can get it to the strip but for now I am just glad to get back into a "real" muscle car with a great history.
My goal is to someday contact some of the original owners and get pictures of the car from back in the 70's or 80's. That would make everything complete.

Just a little FYI, you could probably remove that stud girdle with those being tough cast iron heads. Aluminum heads (especially GM snowflake) are where those things are really needed. They can be a pain in you-know-what! Loosen the girdle, lash the valve to the correct setting, tighten the girdle up, and then re-check the lash and see that it changed. Very frustating!

Kurt,
Looking Great! Your garage needs a few Bears posters and You`ve got one too many heaters in that garage.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
Let me know when you make your debut at the track!
Dan.

I used all those posters to start the fire pit out back! As far as the heaters, I had to use the salamander until the Modine was finished, which was today.
As far as hitting the track, I think it will be a while. I'm still in limbo on what to do with the trans. All I really need is the Z-bar and the trans. But I don't want to chew off more than I can handle. But John and Mike are pushing me to do it now 'cause it will be a lot easier.
Either way, the car is making progress. The front and back windows are coming out tomorrow so Mike and I can make any repairs around them.
I told everyone that I did not want a project car and, well, here I am. And I love it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif

I had the windshield taken out and it broke, as expected. That's ok though. It was tinted and not original to the car. It was dated 1972 and was made by........Ford. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I have a new clear one coming and will be dated correct for the car. The back window was original to the car.
The passenger side wing/vent is also not correct for the car. I have that one coming also.
There are a few rust issues but not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Floors look very good considering it's from the Chicago area. I am very pleased. The part that sucks is the pretty green glue someone used at one time on the floor. Because we all know how much carpet moves???

The drivers side vent/wing rivet is not original to my car and the bracket is bent a little. I went to a local salvage yard and bingo, the guy that was with me found these.
Plus, these vents have clear glass in them and the one on my passenger side is tinted. Turned out to be a nice score.

After a little more investigating over on the Team Chevelle site, the 269 is a partial number of my sequence number on the trim tag.

I just talked with my cousin who is a few years older than me. He said he remembers back in the 70's a '69 SS post sedan at a dealer in the Volo IL area that was a 375 HP car. He had never seen one before. The dealer had paperwork with the car and they wanted a lot of money for it. I was just talking to Dan V. and he said he knows the car. Does anyone else?

Tony had this one in the '80's. Sold it in Illinois. It had a hard life after that. We bought it back in the '90's, minus engine, trans, and paperwork. Installed a 350HP and trans. I sold it again out of state in the late '90's, or 2000. Don't know where it is now.

Randy,
I remember Tony's car when he had it up for auction at the Grayslake Fairgrounds years ago. Nobody seemed to know the signifigance of the 2 dr post cars, and the bidding stalled around $15K. Must have been around '90 - '92.

I remember both of those cars. Chuck had that car after he sold the L78 convert I think.
I believe Tony did have that car at his Muscle Car Mania auction. No one knew what it was.
He then sold it to a pretty big collector at the time. We bought it back, as I said, years later sans drivetrain at a special government tax liquidation auction.

I power washed the driveshaft and cross member. On the driveshaft I noticed a couple of things. First of all it has 3 factory paint marks on it and the other thing was that it has "Dans" written on it
I believe it stands for Dan Mamson. I have a lot of receipts from his garage, Dans Auto Body in Medinah IL, while he was doing work on the car in the late 80's.

I haven't posted anything for a while so here is a quick update on my car.
I had new 2 1/2" Magnaflow exhaust installed and started putting on some "race" decals.
I hope you guys like what I've been doing with Dan's old car. I really have been enjoying it a lot.

Mark, it wasn't fun to say the least. I had my cousin, 2 heat guns, sharp knives and a small electric heater in the car to keep the mat warm.
A few people gave me advise and that did help.
Yes the mat is from ACC.

Jim, I had them and took them off. They rode like crap! I wanted to leave them on but everyone told me that if I started taking it to the track that they would tear things up and that the stock suspension will work fine with a little tweaking.
So far I have put HD springs with air bags. It's working pretty good. Next is to put the boxed upper and lower control arms in with new bushings that I made.

For those that aren't on some of the other sites I'm on, I pulled the motor out of the Chevelle last Sunday and during the week slowly pulled it apart except the crank, rods and cam.
I found out that the motor has .060 over 12.5:1 pistons with 840 closed chamber heads. Now I understand why it ran better with a 104/93 fuel mix.
The crank is cast iron with standard rods. I have a couple 6223 cranks but probably will be looking for a different set of rods.
I'm still on the fence of building this motor or taking the 512 2-bolt main block I have and building a 427. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

You should probably replace those economy aluminum rocker arms with something better. They are NOT extruded aluminum or billet but a low-cost investment casting. You could also save some yourself quite a bit of hassle when it comes to lashing valves by losing the stud girdle. Sure, I know they're exotic-looking and neat to look at when the valve covers are off, but unless you have an .800 lift Pro Stock camshaft in that motor, they are just not needed in a cast-iron headed engine and complicate a valve lashing. Try it yourself sometime, loosen the girdle, lash a few valves, tighten the girdle back up and re-check the valves you just did and see how much they changed! Let me add this......please don't think I'm criticizing your car, I'm just trying to chime in with some good advise for when you re-assemble that motor. I've wasted a lot of good money over the years on parts that just don't work well and would like to think that I've learned a thing or two from that.

Mark, any help/info that I can get is not criticism...it's exactly what I want/need which is good advice. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
I figured the rocker arms were not anything special. I hope to use Comp Cams Pro Magnum rocker arms. You are not the first person to say the Comp Cams stud girdle is a pain in the butt and not needed with cast iron heads! My goal is to use 077 aluminum heads and want to make sure that the rocker studs don't pull out.
Is there a more user friendly stud girdle out there or if the rocker studs are installed correctly it won't be needed?
markjohnson

Well, I currently have a set nice set of #077's on my LS-6 and I knew that they have a history of breaking rocker stud bosses. It's rare to find a set that have actually never been welded on. Anyway, it's very important to purchase a set of ARP Rocker Studs that have the deep threads on bottom. Also, get a bottoming tap to add an extra 2-3 threads to the bottom of ALL the rocker holes. Go slow and use tapping oil, you DO NOT want to deal with a broken tap that deep. That head would be ruined. It's been a few years since I did this, but I think there was only a couple rocker studs (the end ones maybe?) that need to have a thread or two removed so they the shoulder would seat properly. I think if you did this and stuck with a solid lifer cam, and not a wild roller, that you could get by without that stud girdle. I've got a .600 lift solid camshaft in mine with ZERO trouble over several years now. Those Comp Cams Pro Magnum Rockers seem like very good ones and should be fine. I'll tell 'ya, I've had just the best luck you could ever imagine with Harland Sharp Roller Rockers. I think some people are scared away from them by their lower price, but I've used them quite a bit with no trouble ever, even on some pretty radical Roller cam'ed street cars that I ran hard for many miles. And trust me.....I run them hard.

Basically I am changing the 4 speed gear ratio from: 2.20 / 1.64 / 1.28 / 1.00
to: 2.52 / 1.88 / 1.46 / 1.00
It will be a lot better on the street and out of the hole at the strip.
Plus the gears are made of stronger material than a typical M20 and they are machined at a 20 degree helix angle on the gearset as opposed to a 30 degree angle.
If my math is correct it will make my 3.73 rear gears feel like 4.26 in 1st changing from a 2.20 to a 2.52 first gear.

What he tried to tell me is that he personally popped a few from what he told me in his with a semi stock LS7 crate motor that he bought back in the 70s with 411s. He was telling me it didn't like powershifting and I don't remember if it was from 2-3 or 3-4.

Good lookin' motor with all that aluminum up on top! Hey......where's the aluminum water pump at? I've always loved the Gold Moroso valve covers, they're considered nostalgic to my generation and many bad-ass, fast Rat Motors always seemed to have them! I've had my share of them and they do tend to leak a bit sometimes because the aluminum distorts slightly when the bolts are tightened. Stock or aftermarket tabs really help 'em out!

I hope your close Dan but I'm not too sure about the whole numbers thing on the dyno. I think the real test will be at the track.
Mark, we do have a set of the aftermarket tabs for the valve covers, they weren't on yet.
A friend of mine that lived down the street when I was growing up had a '70 Chevelle with a 427 +.125 and 13.5 to 1 slugs. He had those valve covers on his motor which was back in the late 70's early 80's. I thought they would look somewhat correct plus I needed them to clear the stud girdle.

Well, I hate to be the fly in the ointment, but those figures seem a bit low to me. To be frank, you've gotta be thinking the same thing after spending a pretty good chunk of change on some nice, premium parts. I've been watching your build and I liked your cylinder head, solid Roller camshaft, and intake choice. I've had similar solid roller BBC's that have made good power and I expected about 460-480 HP out of your motor. What do you think is holding it back from it's potential?

I would have figured more also, but as long as it's reliable. We built a 427 about 15 years ago using stock 3/8ths rods, factory comp 11-1 TRW pistons with BONE STOCK 840 heads and a roller cam. The son of gun put out just over 550 HP at 7000 using an Edelbrock victor manifold and a 1050 dominator. Our car weighed just at 3000 lbs and ran low 10.20's at 130 mph. Love the 427's. I have the 077's on my 427 (430hp) superstock motor, which are good heads if done correctly. That motor put out 772 with a very mild porting job per NHRA Volume specs. The 401 heads are the way to go, so if anyone wants a set of 077 heads complete you know where to find me. I want the 401 heads... Brian Oakes and few others are making 850-900 plus HP with their 427's, but are running the 401 GM head

I went with some friends to Union Grove's Great Lakes Dragaway last Wednesday. I had some issues at first which is to be expected the first time at the track with this car and a new motor.
I made 7 runs. The first was
[email protected]. After a few changes I got the car down to
[email protected]. The right lane timing lights weren't working at the 60'. I made a couple of runs in the left lane but only received one time slip. That was 2.161 60' which was my 13.87 run.
It wheelhopped something terrible so I couldn't do anything from the start. The cam said it's good until 6200 but I went quicker shifting at 7k.
It sure felt good to take it to the strip. The car felt at home there!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif
Here are a couple of pictures. I'm trying to get the digital videos up on photobucket but I don't know how to get them on my computer first.

Kurt, I have a Chevelle traction bar from a 1969 Chevelle, 12 bolt rear, it really helped the chevelle's hook up and eliminate wheel hop, they were very popular back then, let me know if you want to try it, pretty easy to install, it just may get you into the mid 12's.
Very nice car, mike

Thanks for the offer Mike but I put some QA1 adjustable shocks on the car and the wheel hop is gone. They're not vintage but it's better than broken parts!

I received a phone call the other day from my engine builder to let me know that they made a mistake on the dyno. He said that the "corrected" setting for the weather was not set. He will be giving me a updated printout with the corrections but he was thinking it will come out around 450hp vs. 421hp. Not that it matters but it sounds good!!! :-)

I have been doing some research on a phone number that Dan Vasic gave me that was on a For Sale sign under the back seat of the Chevelle. As of right now I received a PDF of the Chicago Tribune from September 15, 1977.
The ad reads as follows:
"CHEVELLE '69 SS396 4 sp Body gd cond., 1k. new 402 H.P., tri-power, 12 1/2-1 pistons. Much, much more. Must sell. $1500 or best offer. 252-5964/456-3198."
Does anyone recognize the numbers or the area around Chicago that they may be in? Also, I blew up the ad and pasted it into a Word document. Is there a way for me to get it onto Photobucket so I can display it?
Thanks, Kurt

I took the car to Great Lakes Dragaway last Thursday for a little TnT.
With the 780 vacuum secondary, 163 intake and 3.73 gears, the best time I had with the car was 12.90@108 with ET Streets on the car at SCR14 in Joliet.
I changed the carb to a 850DP and the intake to a Edelbrock TM2R. The gears got bumped up to 4.56's. My first pass was

Kurt;
You're picking up 23.5 mph on the back half which is pretty good for this combination.
Pick up that 60' time ~.2 and 11's are in the bag. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif
-Is the car dead-hooking? If so, does it bog at all on the launch?
-For comparisons sake: what were the 60' times with the 780/163? (can't remember, does the 163 still have the plenum divider intact?)
-Did you change the rear gears and intake/carb at the same time?
-Is the timing locked out @ 39°, or is there a functioning curve? If so, what are the #'s?
-Have you done A-B-A testing with/without the air cleaner to verify it is faster w/o?
-What's the pump cam/squirter combo on the carb? (4781?)
-Shocks/springs/sway bar(s)?
-Any front or rear suspension traction aids? (appears the car leaves pretty level now, unusual for a "stock" A body)
In case I haven't said so lately, I seriously dig that car. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/burnout.gif

It hooked pretty good at first with a 4000 rpm launch but then spun a little.
I can't find my time slip from Joliet but here's my best time from Byron:
60'...2.185
330...5.595
1/8...8.417
MPH...87.17
1000...10.841
1/4...12.912
MPH...108.38
That was with the M/T Indy Profile tires leaving 2000 rpm's or so. I had the 163 intake and the 4346 Holley on it.
I changed the intake only and took the car to the track early spring. It was opening day of GLD and it was a little cool. The car was spinning bad in first an getting sideways in second with both ET's in the 13.1xx. I wasn't very happy with the track so I loaded it up and went home. Then I put the 850dp on and changed the gears.
The timing has a mechanical advance with a 14* differential. So at 39* total timing it starts out at 25*.
I started out with the air cleaner on then took it off after the 3rd or 4th pass but I made other changes too. Yes....I should have made one more pass with it on but I was too happy with the last pass.
I'm embarrassed to say that I just threw the 4781 on that a friend let me borrow to try without doing anything to it but the motor seems to like it....a lot. The carb looks to be stock. The accelerators are 30cc in the front and 50cc in the rear. It has 31/31 squirters. I'm not sure what the cams are but appear to be white (F) and pink (R)???
I have Koni shocks up front but not sure what the are exactly and a sway bar. The rear shocks are QA1 12 position adjustable. I installed Edelbrock Anti-Hop bars installed with the upper and lower control arms boxed in with no sway bar in back. I have air bags on both rear springs but forgot to check that day.
Thanks, Kurt

Bruce, I ran a
[email protected] that pass.
I'm not sure why but everyone seemed to be running slower that day. When I was at SCR15 the car ran 12.15@115 and I was spinning in first gear....the temp was in the upper 50's at Byron compared to August weather at Joliet. I thought for sure it would be in the high 11's on Saturday. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif
Kurt
A stiffer spring, such as a Moroso and/or a air bag would help plant the right rear (level the front).
You may have been hooking too good. At times a little tire slip is not a bad thing, as it allows the engine to operate within the RPM range where it makes the most power.
Jim Ferron
10-24-2012, 06:56 PM
An air bag in the passenger rear will keep that front tire on the ground. 15-20 lbs is good.
I'd say you have 100% traction if that wheel is going up..Looks cool. I'd leave it alone.
But you do use [waste] some HP to get it all twisty like that <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

I currently have QA1 12 position shocks and air bags in the rear. I just need some more seat time to get them adjusted so the car launches level.
The car leaves very different at 4000 RPM's vs. off idle!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif

I went to Byron Dragway yesterday, the first time I've taken the car to a track since last year. Only got two passes as there were a few problems with other cars putting liquids on the track during the day but then a horrible crash about 3/4 down the track which took about an hour and a half to clean up THEN the rain came at 3. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/mad.gif
My first pass wasn't very good as I had clutch problems but my second pass I clicked off a 12.31@114. I decided to run with open headers for the first time. It didn't seem to do much but that's hard to tell with only one good pass. I did notice it seemed to rev faster. The biggest change was the adjustment I made to the QA1 shocks in the rear. I made both of them stiffer and the car really left level with little to no twist.
I'm bound and determined to get into the 11's with the current setup but it takes more time at the track and I don't have/make it plus I want the car to stay together without breaking anything.
I do have a over the counter 136 intake I'm thinking of gasket matching and taking some of the divider out. The current intake is a Edelbrock TM2R which works great but I think I need a dual plane for low end.
The last picture is from last year.

I'm making some changes to the Chevelle. I haven't liked the Hurst Competition Shifter since I put it in. It doesn't feel solid like a Super Street Shifter or a Ram Rod. I much prefer the straight rods over the bent rods....it's a much more solid feel when shifting.
My trans builder told me to try the Ram Rod. After a week I'll either throw it out in the trash or get rid of my WIFE before I take that shifter out! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cool.gif I won't go that far but I'm going to try out the Ram Rod. If I don't like it, I have a Super Shifter for plan "C" to put in it. In other words, only the straight rods will be in the car.
I have some metal fabricating to do (obviously) but here are some pictures.

When I purchased the car from Dan, it had carpeting in it. I bought a reproduction rubber floor for it from ACC. Well, when I decided to change shifters (from Hurst Comp. Plus to Ram Rod), the hole location is in a different spot. Knowing that, I purchased a used rubber floor from a guy in Ohio at the Chevelle car show. I took a chance hoping the hole that the previous owner's cut would be close to where I need it for the Ram Rod. Saturday I got the rubber floor out and set it in the car.....it looks like it's going to work. Now I have to heat the garage up, put a space heater in the car and use a heat gun to get the floor to lay down the best that I can......I was hoping I didn't ever have to do that again 'cause it SUCKS......but such not the case.

My big concern now is getting it to lay down and then see how far forward I can put the bench seat without it hitting the shifter. Since I found out from the NCRS paperwork that my car was delivered to Van-T in Topeka, Kansas, I finally had some time to check and see if I could find any previous holes for the Van-T dealer emblem.
I got a small/flexible camera from work and looked in a hole on the passenger side trunk but couldn't find anything.
Then I took Rick Pauley's advice and looked at the tail panel and he was right, there are the holes, 4-1/2" center to center, just like the emblem.
Time to get it on before the Ohio Show.
