I decided to do some cosmetic work to the 69 granny Nova I bought 2 years ago. This is one solid car!!! It had a lot of little dings and scratches that needed attention so I brought it to one of my clients for a "freshening up". They have an "old school" guy there who has done a lot of resto work and he is really enjoying working on this 40 year old survivor. He has gone over the whole car and fixed all the little stuff...he only found one minor rust spot the size of quarter on the lower dogleg of the pass. side front fender. This car was well cared for and certainly wasn't left out in the weather..it should look real nice when we are done. Here are some pics I took today at the shop...we spent sometime going over the car and planning the next step.

I pulled out the back seat and found 2 build sheets...one was the correct one for the car, the other was dated the same day with the same interior...but different body number and paint color. Who said the factory never made a mistake http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

first one in seat bottom...incorrect

Yes, I decided that would make the most sense...with so many little areas to work on it doesn't pay not to. I would appreciate any info on paint formula for 69 Olympic Gold...we put the camera on it to get some ideas...but I'm sure some the experts here have some "real info".

We took the front end apart....bumper, grill, etc. The bumper filler was cracked in a couple places. I'm going to clean and detail front rear bumpers, hardware, etc. and clean and polish all the trim and emblems...everything is in really nice shape...should look when we are done. The hood had 8 or 9 small dings that looked like someone was hitting it with a ball peen hammer, very strange..

build sheet reads:

seq:375 04/16 11427 WRN 370840 731 65 B

car has the 250cid 155hp L6, powerglide, full wheel covers, white wall tires,HD battery, am radio, special interior group, exterior decor package, black vinyl top, HD undercoat...sold new at Tremont Chevy in the Bronx. Anybody got a trunk emblem..??

It wasn't much...just a plain jane L78, bench seat 4 spd http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

ok, not really...seq:366 04/16/69 11427 WRN 3624x3 (rust mark on the 5th digit) 731 40 40

nothing entered in any of the other boxes...strange http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I can see how they made the mistake...same black plain jane interior. So, somewhere another Nova is running around with the bottom half of a back seat meant for this car.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Update on the Granny Project:

Man is thing solid..!!! Took out the front seat and rubber floor mats tonite....only one word "MINT". My guy Tim has removed the rear bumper, tail lights and the b/s moldings. Only have the front fender Nova emblems to go and few other little items...he said it is a pleasure to work on a car where you don't need a 1/2" drive air ratchet to take it apart. The rear bumper bolts came off with a 1/4" air ratchet http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drool.gif seat belt bolts were effortless http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif if anyone needs any photos of original stuff for resto let me know...this car is the perfect benchmark for that info.

This a great shot of the "GREEN" ookumpucky that was used @ Willow Run to seal the floor plugs, very different from the Camaro's, kind of spongy too.

The southern Illinois deviation to the word is 'ickempucky'. My Dad used that term to describe some kind of substance they used at the implement dealer where he worked when I was a little punk (like Frankie). It was a cross between a lubricant and adhesive. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif I don't recall what it was used for but my Mother hated the stuff. Stunk to high heaven and was impossible to get out of clothes.

This is the back seat area of my 19,000 mile 68 Nova. I had to take half the car apart to get the rear driver side window back up.... My 5 yr old Nephew decided he wanted some air.... Don't roll down the quarter windows on Novas, no good can come from it.... I didn't lift the padding much to peek under but probably should have... The little white fuzzy stuff is compliments of Mr. mouse...

You can see by those photos the 40 years of gease and grime that was there...we sprayed the bottom with de-greser and then used a pressure washer hooked to hot water. It really helped to get things cleaned up.I bought one of those throw away painters suits...things get a little messy when the grease and water start flying http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Noticed this inspection paint and date stamp on the driver's side front frame...orange paint with a 4-08-69 date stamped upside down.

Here are some "after" shots...since this car had HD undercating from the selling dealer we decided to just e-spray some where needed and finish with a nice coat of chassis black paint. It's not a concours job but, it certainly makes the underside look clean and neat. I will probably do a little more detailing to touch up any little things we missed.

Did some more work tonite...stripped her right down, so I can paint the motor and frame. Boy some of the stuff was very brittle...the temp sending unit fell apart in my hand. PCV hose was so dry rotted it crumbled into little pieces...wire harness clips, same thing..snap!! Overall the stuff is pretty solid...couple of items to repair and refurbish, like the carb (see resto thread). I am going to try the Eastwood Chevy orange engine paint with a brush...we also used a product from SEM called "rustshield"...this stuff is dyanmite, Jason Hale hooked me up with it. We painted the inner fenders, under the hood, back of fenders...and they look beautiful. I'm going to brush it on the sub-frame and paint some other hardware for the car. Here are a couple of pics of the engine bay...just a little more prep and then some paint.

RustShield is great stuff. It goes on like frosting. I use it all the time. Looking good Tom!

Jason, this stuff is really neat...looking forward to seeing the results. What has been your experience with painting over areas that are a little rough...like those control arms you see in the photo..?? Thanks http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Tom,

It will fill in some voids if you lay it on thicker. Just go slow and don't reduce it. If you do want to reduce it for certain areas I have used lacquer thinner. It changes the color a bit though. The stuff covers 220 scratches and more so it is pretty forgiving. Just play with it. It is cheap enough that you could resand the areas and reshoot and not kick yourself too hard.

Tom,
I was told to reduce it with xcelyne you can pick it up at any hardware store. But to fill the void's I would just do a couple of coat's. I have used this stuff on all my cars it gives that perfect finish IMO. I usually spray it with my priming gun with a 1.8 tip. The best part about the product is you can touch it up with a paint brush and hardly notice it when it drys. Great for frame's because you get a lot of road chip's when you drive them.

Well, we did some more work on Saturday afternoon. I finished cleaning the sub-frame and engine and started the painting process. This SEM Rustshield is the BOMB http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif it goes on like butter and really covers the imperfections. I "brushed" it on and when it dries youcan barely tell the difference from spraying. You have to use a good quality brush to get a smooth finish. Next step is to get it back on the lift and paint the bottom overtop of the fresh undercoating and also finish the bottom side of the sub-frame. Then I will start on the engine painting and detailing...Jason Hale was right, this stuff is great!!
