Man Bill, That really is a depressing announcement. Maybe Keith T. has some insight on this too. Where do they want to go, Mexico? I hate hearing this! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

THERE'S PROBABLY SOME TRUTH TO THIS RUMOUR BECAUSE THE HEAD OF THE AUTO WORKER'S UNION WAS ON T.V.HE'S IN A PANIC AND TRYING TO GET A MEETING WITH G.M.''RIGHT NOW!''.AND THE PREMIER OF THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO WAS ALSO INTERVIEWED AND HE DID NOT SAY NO TO THEM MOVNG.I KNOW THAT THE NEW CAMARO IS TO BE BUILT HERE BUT NOTHING IS GUARANTIED THESE DAYS.WHO WOULD HAVE EVER THOUGHT THAT G.M. AND BANKRUPT WOULD BE IN THE SAME SENTENCE!

Chris Buckley is talking a little more interested in doing a wage and benefits deal now. I don't think GM needs GM of Canada as much as we need them, especially right now. I was told that if they all worked for free, a $50K truck might drop in price by about $4500. That isn't going to save GM, but If everyone from the top to the bottom gives a little, something might just get worked out. I think that the real problem is that all the jobs have gone to China, and now it is going to be the auto industry as well. You just can't compete with 1.3 billion slaves, unless you can figure out how to live on less that $1 per hour. The multinationals and the Communist Chinese government have a pretty cozy deal going and it is destroying our economies. Check this out.

Just a little side note. The Camaro line workers were called back in early November. It usually takes a couple of months to get everyone trained and up to speed on jobs. Lots of little problems to work out on equipment that needs reworking to run smoothly. The cars must showing up on dealers' back lots by now unless there are a lot of them sitting in Oshawa.

So sorry to hear the news Bill. The GM contraction is unbelievable. I remember back when the Oshawa casting plant was the best foundry in GM - then they closed it. Now this. Believe it or not - Mexico is in worse shape then US or Canada. We have a plant in Monterrey.

GM can easily move Camaro production to another flex plant. The fact that GM did not accept Ontario's 3.5 billion dollars scares the hell out of me.

Vary sad news indeed. We are going through this here in Dayton Ohio, as GM has all but pulled out and shut everything down. Killed the local economy. The home foreclosures here is as high as anywhere in the US.Every family in this area had someone that worked at GM at one time.

Peterborough is about 50 miles from Oshawa and GM has been Peterborough's biggest employer for several years now. This just gives you a little idea as to how far out the effects of a plant closing are felt. The ripple effect goes even farther out. With us having one tenth the population of the US, one plant closing here has the same effect on our economy as shutting down ten plants in the US. Many people can't get financing and I heard that GM may take some of the money they are getting to help people buy their cars. You can't freeze up an economy this quickly without major problems. GM sales down 46% in January is unheard of before to my knowledge. In 1981-82 the GM Oshawa car and truck plants were both down to one shift. I don't know how this compares because the truck plant is only running part time this winter anyway and the Camaro line is just getting up to speed. Scary times. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
