Though I can't stand what NASCAR has become, I do have qualifying on in the background. Currently New Jersey native Martin Truex Jr. has just knocked likeable old guy Mark Martin from the top spot.

50 BETTER NOT be old for regular guys.( I am hoping it's the new 35!)
But for full season stock car drivers I believe Mark is the oldest since Dale Jarrett retired. There were some older guys trying to qualify for the 500, oldest being 73. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif

I used to see Mark Martin all the time on friday nights at the local Chili's restaurant with his wife and family.
He is very short and looks older in person.

I hope Mark can take the 500 this year. He gave it away last year being a nice guy.

I like NASCAR and i´m a fan of Mark Martin...
Maybe he´s not the "Champion", but Mark´s Performance are very great and durable since a long Time.
Maybe anyone know why he has changed from Ford to GM?
Not only the money, or?

Amen to living with the start time!!!

Finally, 2 1/2 hours later I got to have my first cold one. Only 3 hours later to learn that the weather they could have avoided now called the race short.
Glad I didn't pay to see the race http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

Dale Jr. is SO overrated. Over the years, he's caused SO many crashes, he misses shifts, he misses his pits, he berates his pit crew, and he frequently hits walls when there's no one around him http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
Other drivers seem terrified of ticking off Jr. for fear of fan retalliation, but let's face it, Dale Jr. just isn't a very good driver. I gave him the benefit of the doubt for years, but now he's a veteran, and he continues to make rookie mistakes over and over again.

I have to agree. He is overrated. It's time for Junior to produce. No more excuses. He has the best equipment and is with the best organization.Other driver's won't even use his name when Junior causes a crash.Would he be with Hendrick if he wasn't the BIG E's son???

Haven't gotten the details yet other than that I have to be there at 1000. I'm guessing land at 1000 after most of the crowd is there and before the racing starts.

I think the term "overrated" is often confused with "popular" when it comes to Jr.
He's a good driver, but I don't hear anyone (other than Jr Nation) say he's one of the best.

Probably not IMO. He'll win races this year, but make no mistake it's always been a popularity contest first and foremost. For Hendrick to release shrub in favor of Jr. confirms that. He's a top five driver, but Sr never would have blown two stops in row. That being said I would hate to have a racing career where your DNA is constantly measured against arguably the greatest of all time. He's a pretty genuine guy, that's why he's so popular compared to corporate sugar water sipping automaton's like his teammates.

Ever notice how JR can't even look at the camera when he is being interviewed? I agree he is overrated and just an average driver with above average equipment. He should have been penalized 5 laps like the dude in the Nationwide race the day before. He gets extra consideration just like a select few others do. I also agree that there's no way he can ever live up to the E nation's expectations. Tough place for him and he does a fair job of coming accross as an average Joe.

The number ONE thing that JR did is to tell his step-mom where to stick her raceteam !!

Dale Jr. would have been replaced by another driver years ago if it weren't for the Earnhardt name. It wasn't just last Sunday's race (where he missed his pit stall), it's been all through the past 10 years. He had early success on superspeedways, but he continues to whack walls and take himself out of races, make bonehead moves like pushing someone too hard in a draft (on a turn) and causing crashes, it just never ends. And if someone taps the guy, the fans are ready to lynch the driver that hit him. It's year after year, race after race, he continues to beat himself with poor judgement and inconsistent driving. Obviously, he IS a decent driver to be able to run NASCAR (he's won a few races), but he's NOT the wonder boy that his fans think he is, and that's the definition of overrated.
I think the best trade in NASCAR history has to be getting Kyle Busch for Dale Jr. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I could hardly watch that last race - as I fast forwarded it.
I could not imagine watching it at regular speed with the commercials!!(There's not that much beer in PA!!)
The digger cartoon is the worst - but what bothers me more is how every week they still have to breakdown the terminology and philosophy of racing, like this is the first time a race has been on TV.
Imagine watching a ball game to have the announcer explain the concept of balls and strikes, or why a player slides into a base constantly during the game, !

at the rate regular viewers are dropping, the must feel they need to explain every week to the newbies.

"Boogity-boogity-boogity, let's go racing boys" was slightly entertaining the first time Waltrip said it several years ago but now it's just stupid. Digger: Blame stupid s*hit like that on the intense need for advertizing dollars. They think if they put a cartoon rodent in the lower left corner of the screen that kids will want to watch NASCAR on TV and thus become NASCAR "consumers" for life. Seriously, that's how the marketers think. Same thought process went into turning Las Vegas into a "family friendly" vacation destination. That didn't work out either.
It worked for Flintstones vitamins,Camel cigarettes (Joe Camel),and Budwieser (Spuds McKenzie),but I understand what you're saying, not here.

There was a cartoon series called "NASCAR racers" (on FOX) that came out in the late nineties, I don't recall any drivers commenting on it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
Dale was no fool, it was all helping him make a buck.
