View Full Version : Adopted a Greyhound
As some may know we had to place Pepper, our Dalmation, down, she was just shy of 17 years of age. It has been 5 weeks and 2 days since her passing and quite frankly it has been rough. Karen looked into the Greyhound rescue chapter here in Idaho and we met and adopted "Blaze" today. Blaze aka "Able To Blaze" was raced for 4 1/2 years in Florida. He was retired three weeks ago. He is still pretty thin as I can see all of his ribs. He sure is fast. Here are some pictures. Blaze is a red Brindle in coat color.

As I have said before to others, thank you so much for adopting your dog. There are so many good dogs out there that just need a place to call home. Your new dog looks like he has aready found his.
Thanks again!!

Every Greyhound should retire this way, they deserve it. Well done and make sure you "air him out" every now and then. They love to run fast

Spoiled Dog? Hey, I thought that's why we have them.
Maddie isn't exactly a rescue dog, she just wandered into the yard one day as a fat little puppy and adopted us. She's been with us almost nine years now. I wonder why she stays around? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Sometimes, if I behave myself, she lets me share her couch.

That's a good thing you've done Greg. The Greyhound rescue and placement organization is tops in my book. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Nice! Reminds me of our dog we got from a rescue last March. She is a whippet/black lab mix and is still almost as thing as your greyhound. Our dog isn't as tall and long but she is still very fast. Good job getting a dog from a rescue, there aren't enough people willing to adopt a dog that isn't a puppy and it's a shame.
Itīs a very nice Dog http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
Hope you will have many fun with it, Greyhounds are very suitable for a running workout http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif
From what I have learned racing Greyhounds spend almost all of their time in a crate. Let out to go to the bathroom and when it is time to race. I suppose that it is a big business for some. If the dog races well he/she will go onto race for up to 5 years. Blaze's last race from what I can find was last May 14, 2008 but sometimes races don't get updated.

You would think that the breed would be angry after all of that. It is completely the opposite. He is so timid and kind. He went from 40 mph to couch potato in no time http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif When I take him to our large back yard he reminds me of a track star. He first stretches the front legs then the back. Begins to jog then lets it go full throttle with a bust of speed.
Were taking him in tomorrow to meet our vet and get a wellness exam. He did have all of his shots and teeth cleaned just before we got him from the adoption agency. The Greyhound adoption people are really amazing. My hat goes off to all of those volunteers that help get these great dogs placed with families.

Congratulations on your new Greyhound. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
Do you have a two level home? If so will he climb the stairs to the second level?
I ask because my sister in-law adopted two, one goes by the name "Skiddy Octane" and the other one which was not raced "Zack".
Skiddy will not climb the stairs to the second level http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif. She is very happy with both of them. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Blaze does not seem interested and has not tried to go upstairs yet. I don't think he has been trained to do it. The new home we are trying to complete will have a downstairs basement, and a second story (more stairs). I was thinking about getting baby gates when the time comes when we move.
Karen is wanting to get another Greyhound someday. From what I have read they like the company of another. How long has your sister in law had Skiddy Octane and Zack?

Please post a video....I'd love to see him streching and warming up then when he's ready getting set in the blocks and waiting for the starter pistol(or the sound of your voice).
You need to take him to the dog park and let him pump up his chest and strut his stuff. Parallels the feeling we get on the way to the local cruise!

gb70, IIRC she lost her golden about 3 1/2 yrs. ago http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif and decided to go in a different direction in regards to the breed of dog.
The first (Zack) was adopted about 3 yrs. ago, about a year later she adopted Skiddy.
The dogs have been together for 2 yrs. now and you couldn't separate them, my sister in-law just loves both of them. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Sorry Rubbin I hit wrong RE, still getting used to this board.

I was thinking the same thing. We just got another inch of snow and more is in the forecast but once it dries up I will get some footage. I need to find a really big fenced yard where he can hit top speed. They have been recorded going 40 mph! I like the way he handles the corners, it's like the side of him is on a race bike! He leans into it and accelerates out of the turn. Fun to watch. The scary thing is when I tell him to slow down as he approaches the back porch cement. The other day I had some ice on it and I don't want him to lose control, then crash and burn http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

My Uncle had a Saluki when I was younger. I remember going to the park and when my Uncle took off the leash she took off like a shot! There was a German Shepherd that wanted to run and play with with her, but could not keep up at all. Greyhounds and Salukis run like Top-Fuel dragsters! Post a video when you can they are something else when in motion.

From the AP......
SYDNEY (AFP) A pet dog that fell overboard in rough seas off Australia has been reunited with its owners after surviving alone on an island for four months, reports said.
Sophie Tucker, apparently named after a late US entertainer, fell overboard as Jan Griffith and her family sailed through choppy waters off the northeast Queensland coast in November.
The dog was believed to have drowned and Griffith said the family was devastated.
But out of sight of the family, Sophie Tucker was swimming doggedly and finally made it to St Bees Island, five nautical miles away, and began the sort of life popularised by the TV reality show "Survivor."
She was returned to her family last week when Griffith contacted rangers who had captured a dog that had been living off feral goats on the largely uninhabited island, in the faint hope it might be their long-lost pet.
When the Griffiths met the rangers' boat bringing the dog to the mainland they found that it was indeed Sophie Tucker on board.
"We called the dog and she started whimpering and banging the cage and they let her out and she just about flattened us," Griffith told the national AAP news agency.
"She wriggled around like a mad thing."
Griffith said that when the dog was first spotted on the island she had been in poor condition.
"And then all of a sudden she started to look good and it was when the rangers had found baby goat carcasses so she'd started eating baby goats," she said.
Sophie Tucker, a member of the Australian cattle dog breed, had been quick to readjust to the comforts of home, complete with airconditioning, Griffiths said.
"She surprised us all. She was a house dog and look what she's done, she's swum over five nautical miles, she's managed to live off the land all on her own," Griffiths said.
"We wish she could talk, we truly do."
Wow, that is amazing!
We added one more yesterday. Hanna is a 7 year old female Greyhound that we adopted from the Sighthound Adoption Center.

I wanted to bring this topic back to the top:
Our little dog Garth died unexpectedly Tuesday and has left a very large hole in my heart. I am thankful for the time we had with him but miss him very much.
I wouldn't feel right if I didn't mention again that Garth was rescued from a puppy mill when he was about 3-4 years old and we found him through a Sheltie rescue program. I would only ask that anyone that is thinking of getting a dog please consider getting one from a shelter or rescue program. There are lots of great dogs of all ages and breeds that really need a home.
