View Full Version : 69 COPO Camaro barn find

Last week, I was very fortunate to be contacted by a reputable sYc member, who would like to remain nameless, asking me if I was still looking for a 69 COPO Camaro . When I responded that I was, a name and number was given to me and I immediately called. After asking questions and receiving a few pictures confirming what the car was, it took me all of two seconds to commit to the purchase and book my flight from California to Ohio. I was told the car did not have it's original M22 or BE rear but that was not a concern to me as I realized how these cars were driven in their day. I was just happy it had it's original engine and Protect-O-Plate.
The “car chasing” drama almost started immediately. While in transit, I get a txt from the owner that someone had stopped by driving a truck with Illinois plates and tried to buy the car, offering more than what I had bought it for…. I thought I may have a problem but fortunately the owners of the car are stand up people and told me no matter what anyone offered, we had a deal. Nonetheless, I was anxious to get to the car.

I arrived in Ohio on the morning of Friday the 13th and (hoping it wasn’t an omen) hooked up with a good buddy who is a 69 Camaro owner and headed out together toward the Ohio River. Though I had only talked to a few buddies about the car, it appeared the word was getting out. Calls were now coming in every 30 minutes to either myself, the owner or the owners father from people who we did not know, asking if they could buy the car. We had no idea how they even got our names and phone numbers! With the news of the truck showing up and now all the calls coming in, I found my foot getting heavier and heavier on the rentals gas pedal – I had to get there and fast I thought.

When I got to the car in Gallipolis, Ohio the owners said they were still receiving numerous phone calls some of which they are still receiving today… I guess this proves timing is everything. I travel a lot and had just gotten back from racing in Dubai and had I been gone, someone else may have been posting their own story right now, but as luck would have it all worked out well for me .

While we were waiting for my transporter to show up t hat was some 20 min behind us, we noticed a truck and trailer pass the property and pull off to the side of the road. The minute my rig showed up all of the sudden everything changed…. the truck and trailer parked up the road took off and everything got a little more quite as if someone was watching. At least our phones stopped ringing…. for a while anyways. We loaded up the car, a family owned X44 with only 7504 original miles!

Lawrence Clark, the original owner, had wrecked his big block El Camino and with the insurance money went to Hairston Chevrolet in Chesapeake , Ohio on Oct 20th 1969 and bought a Garnet Red with Black standard 69 COPO Camaro.

He put a trailer hitch on it to tow his motorcycle, and like a true road man mounted a CB radio under the glove box with a magnetic antennae on the truck … the antennae is still in the trunk and the trailer hitch is still mounted ….. Unfortunately Lawrence passed on and the car went to his brother-in-law where the unopened MN 427 was removed and put on an engine stand. The car remained in a barn for over 30 years … with a West Virginia plate last registered in 1978 .
I am not sure if I am going to restore the car right away or take Charley’s advice and just put the engine in it and drive it like it is…. But I am very happy to be the caretaker of this car for along time to come. While in Ohio, I received a call letting me know that someone actually had the original M22 and BE from my car and would be willing to sell them back to me! Hopefully, I will be able to re-unite the M22 and BE to my car shortly. They are still out there boys…enjoy the pictures!

Van...that just flat out rocks! Congrats to you http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I think that you should do as Charley suggested...get the engine ready and drive it around for a while after you clean it up!

I think you should make a side trip to AZ and bring it to Pavillions as well http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can I get a ride in it?

Congrats again and my hat goes off to the seller that stood by his word as others tried to buy it after the fact. Cool. I would clean it and make it run, drive, make sure the CB works and leave the trailer hitch on it. That car would be a huge hit in Chicago this November and I happen to know a truck that will be headed that way.

Very, very cool find and I'm very glad you were able to get it before the weasels weaseled their way into it. When it comes to money and the acquisition of rare musclecars unfortunately, it too often becomes every man for himself and friendships go out the window. Congrats X 100!

I have spoken to the person who has the original M22 and BE rear end from my car . I am trying to buy the parts but there is a person by the name of Doug Perry who is trying to buy them also . The person with the parts indicated he had heard from Mr. Perry today ... I also know the man I bought the car from was getting calls from Doug Perry last week when I had bought the car and told me yesterday he is still getting calls from him.... not sure why someone would want to buy parts for a car that he knows is sold to another person and that person is trying to buy them himself to put back in the car. I would think for the sake of the car he would back out and let me put this together ! After all we are all just caretakers of these cars . They will be around long after we are gone .

I do not know that for sure PJ but that is the assumption most seem to have given the circumstances. However I don't want to get ahead of myself and want to give Mr. Perry the benfit of the doubt and hope he does the right thing and steps aside.. it may be a misunderstanding and he could be one heck of a guy and I hope he is .I don't know him so even though it is frustrating I don't want to assume he is some bad guy .. in the end I would like to think he is trying to help me but since it is apparent I am trying to put these parts back with the car I am not sure what to think . I think everyone needs to calm down about this deal because Doug is a member here and he should be giving the right to defend himself before you hang him or throw away the keys. He has known about this car for a while but never could track it down and he has been trying to buy these parts for some time as well. I am personal friends with Doug and he is a stand up guy that I trust. He told me about this car over the Summer and tracked it down to the area but could never close in on the car. He also placed ads in the local papers in the area if anyone knew the whereabouts of this car. So before you jump his As--ss give him a chance to talk. I just talked to Doug on the phone and he is away from a computer but he wanted me to post his phone number if anyone wants to talk about this situation. After the car was sold he stopped calling, hell maybe you should thank him for shaking this one loose. As for the parts, Doug has two 09A COPOs and I amagine these parts would have the same casting dates he is after for his cars??? 614-203-1272 Mark

Chevy Thunder, please call me tommorrow after 11 AM EST.614-203-1272. There is ALOT more to this story than you know, thank you Doug Perry. As for the armchair quarterbacks that have nothing better to do then HIDE behind your keyboards and call people names feel free to call me as well. Some people on this site need to get a life, instead they decide to always put their noses in other peoples bussiness and try to involve themselves in all the soap operas because they have nothing better to do. This is why some guys on this site will not show photos of their restorations or cars for they fear the IDIOT POLICE. I will not discuss this publicly because it is NONE of their DAMN business, but Chevy Thunder please call me. Thank you. Moderators I am sorry for my outburst, but I will not let someone bash me publicly.

It sure seems like the OP doesn't assume you have a negative agenda:

"However I don't want to get ahead of myself and want to give Mr. It is just a bit interesting that you are making calls about parts that go with the COPO. Not to speak for anyone else but I am sure the guys who posted the negative posts were being a bit reactionary.

Hopefully the original parts end up with the COPO!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I will ask Rube to post the details on the rear and trans to clear up the possibilities and speculations.
IMHO, none of the parties involved have any ill intentions or malicious plans about the parts.

Here is what I know:
Rube had been trying to buy the car for at least the last ten years.

Doug called Rube on Monday night, which is when Rube told him to call back.

Doug had placed adds in the local papers for the past few months trying to locate this car.

Earlier this year Doug had tried to purchase the extra BE0708 rear that I have, which I got from Frank, for one of his cars.

Congratulations on the new toy Van. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Van, when you get a chance, give me a call. I would like to compare a few things on my car to yours. My COPO is 09A NOR111140 VIN#680415.

Talk to you later,

Well said Mike

Just got off the phone with Doug . We had a nice conversation , had a few laughs and life goes on . Doug sounds like he has some great cars and I enjoyed or talk. He would like to see these parts back with the orignal car as well.

I will try and re-unite the parts with this car.

Bottom line is this car stays with me . I did not buy it to flip it . I Have already started cleaning her up. However, if I ever sell it the owner of the M22 and BE rear end will get first dibs on the car at a price reflective of his contribution/efforts to reuniting these parts with the original car. Rube has been after this car for 10 years and just an FYI - I never knew this would play out the way it did. I was 20 min from the owners house to pick up the car when I discovered the original M22 and BE for this car existed. I was told that the BE was taken to a scrap yard two months earlier. After talking to Doug he had heard the same story.

It is tough when you buy a car and then talk to a guy who has been after the same car for ten years.. has sat in it , held the POP in his hand ... At one time Rube almost had a deal only to have the seller change his mind . Rube is a great guy and part of me wants to turn the car over to him but the other parts says , " you finally found the car you wanted" . So I find myself going back and forth in a quandary about what I should do but bottom line is I am going to keep the car . Still I feel for Rube . So the deal is the car is not for sale , because a few have asked... and if it ever gets sold I will make Rube a deal at below what the car is worth because I think that is the right thing to do. I do not see that happening anytime soon but whether it is 2 years from now or 50 he gets the first call. And if he passes it may or may not be fore sale publicly , and if it isn‘t , Rube will get another call down the road.

Sorry this thread got a little off track . Maybe I should have put some more thought into a few of my posts. Hopefully we can get back to following a story that has a happy ending , or I would like to think new begining, of a special car getting all it's parts back and being enjoyed like it was almost 40 years ago. I promise you guys I will do it justice

Not important anymore. The facts have been stated:
1) Van is keeping the car
2) Rube is keeping the parts
3) Doug was not involved with parking a trailer anywhere except in his shop.
End of story for now. Anything else is just idle gossip and serves no purpose. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Fair enough. I guess I'm also guilty of being passionate about doing the right thing and when it looked like people were basically trying to steal the car out from under your nose it rubbed me the wrong way. Too many people these days have no regard at all for what's right and wrong when it comes to things like this. Glad it all worked out for the best.

Van, congrats on the COPO Camaro! A few years ago I had some luck of my own when I found a '70 LS6 Chevelle with only 17,000 original miles, POP, and later found the build sheet. Just like this car and mine, they are still out there!!

Its good that it worked out for you. I have been in your shoes and lost aka leaving at 10pm Wesnday night and driving straight to Roseville CA on a barnfind and loosing out in the last 2 hours.

I can understand and feel the funny feelings you have and had. Hopefully you can have a coctail or five and make good out of it like it sounds like you did.

"Rube has the parts and looks like they will be back with the car they were born with ."

That will be a 'cause to celebrate'.

I Love barn find stories and all the other stuff going on makes for great drama. I just can't stand someone getting one out of my backyard, but it sounds like it is going to right guy! Congrats and if you need a resto let me know.

I was 20 min from the owners house to pick up the car when I discovered the original M22 and BE for this car existed. I was told that the BE was taken to a scrap yard two months earlier.

I was told that the car became straight transportation before it was put away so they put a 3:55 in it and a M21 to make it more street friendly. That matches what is in the car now .

Congrats Van...great you made it happen!.

Love how you own the top cars on my want list...the Copo plus your 935 and 962s!.
Copos may be on lots of guy's lists but most don't even know what a 962 is much less who the Kremer Bros are..

How'd your Dubai run in the BMW go?.
Simply amazing where diesel technology has reached in recent years..

Have you seen this clip before...who, where and what is it, a Lola?.
Poor animal and all but the driver hardly flinches or misses a beat!.

That is funny... my son is probably the youngest person to drive a 962 at 15 years of age and today he is in Montana riding a snow mobile for the first time.Hopefully the do drive the same http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks Pete... here are a few pics of my 962.. that's my son in one of them at Infineon

I just sold this one a few moths ago but since you like the Kremer Bros they built this one on a carbon composite tub.. these are at Daytona. This was a fully restored with all the updates.. water water turbo about 900 fully dialed up about 215 on the bank

Back to the COPO .. I will definitley keep everyone posted . I am very excited about this car . My son wants to know his trade in value on his RS Z . I said to him " I love ya kid... you have never been short on ambition" he just looked at me like , " what the hell does that mean" ?

Speaking of COPO Camaro's, here are a couple of strong-running regulars at Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ circa 1971.

Looks like one of the members on Team Camaro knows the past owners son and is nice enough to put me in contact with him .
