View Full Version : Tell me about rare color combos!

I remember being in Nashville in the early 1990s and saw a two-tone SS350. It was the lighter blue available that year (Warwick Blue in Pontiac-speak) with a white top. I believe 1969 was the first year for the two-tone option on the Camaro.
I've also known that the default stripe color for a burgundy 1969 Camaro was - strangely - red. I have seen one or two SSs like this, but it didn't occur to me that I hadn't seen a Z . . . until now. There's a pic of one in the latest Musclecar Review, and it's the first Camaro in a long time that has stopped my heart.
So I thought it would be interesting if people could post cars that are trimmed a little different from the norm . . . anyone?

Wonder if most of these unusual color combo cars were built at the end of the production run where they had an inventory of parts they had to use up for the end of the model run?

I have what some may consider to be unique. My car was built in late September, 1969 and delivered just in time for Halloween. It is a strange combination of Tuxedo Black with White stripes and Orange Hounds Tooth interior. It is an original ZL2 ducted hood car with Canadian documentation. Some folks refer to the car as "The Great Pumpkin" I would be happy to share if anyone would like to see it.
Richard.
Oh and by the way I also have a glacier blue 69 coupe with a dover white painted roof and dark blue interior. The original owner did not care for the painted top and had a dark blue vinyl top installed.
Thanks!

Thanks Gilbert, it's been doing pretty well at the judged shows. I took it to the Winter National show in Kissimme a couple of weeks ago and it pulled a 992 out of a 1000. I actually thought it would do a little better but I guess I need to correct a couple of oversights on my part. It's going to the AACA Winter National show this Friday and the Charlotte Spring National show in April. We'll see how it does there. It's been fun for sure.

Thanks for the compliments. I've restored several 70's over the years and they were nice drivers but this was my first attempt at a nut/bolt, frame off, rotisserrie resto. I had a lot of great advice from Jeff Dotterer, Chris White and a few of the guys on T Chevelle on correctness issues as well. Those guys know their stuff! My only problem is I can't just hop in it and go. I've put about 40/50 miles on it just to break everything in, now it's just trailored. It's still a lot of fun showing it though.

It's been a long time since I looked at one though. Back then you could special order just about any combination you wanted. I think white houndstooth was only available the last half of 68??? The one you found is the only other one to surface in any body trim(SS RS Z/28 plain jane etc). Any more cousins out there??? "Dalmation Trim" is just plain rare with any color exterior

The silver/green Camaro is pretty interesting. I've never seen a combo like that, but silver was kinda a flexible color - probably second to black or white as being something that goes with everything. On a hunch, I checked a color chart for another car that was available in silver, and lo and behold, green was a recommended interior for silver. Pretty interesting! http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/colorAndTrim/1969/69_Charger0003.jpg
1968 Nova SSs are my favorite of that generation - I especially like the SUPER SPORT script on the rockers. But green and gold are not unusual in combination. I think of it more of a sedan combo rather than something that you'd find on a performance car.
Richard, your car is wonderful. I always thought the orange houndstooth was pace car-only (plus Z10s too!), but maybe not? Was it RPO or special-ordered? I think it's much more striking than a while car with the same interior because the white car would remind me of a pace car.
Keep the pics coming! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

The Orange Hounds Tooth was a standard feature or RPO code for a Z10 or Z11 however the interior itself could be ordered with any exterior colour. It just so happens very few people found the interior an appealing choice with most exterior colours. My car was definitely a speacial order and having been built right before Halloween it has been dubbed "The Pumpkin" I have never seen another like it and feel very forunate to own such a car. I'm confused, so I'll rephrase:
Was the orange houndstooth normally available on cars other than the Z11/Z10 cars? Or did it have to be a special-ordered car if you wanted that interior? I know white, black, and yellow houndstooth were regularly available, but I've had the impression it was Z11/Z10-only. I could be wrong, though.

To the best of our knowledge my Canadian documented car is the only Tuxedo Black 1969 Z/28 produced with Orange Hounds Tooth Interior. There are some other cars found with the orange interior but no other black Z/28's. My car is also an original ZL2 special ducted hood car with white stripes. How would he know it's a 1 of 1? For one thing, Bamboo Cream is like Gobi Beige, right? And, hence, Sierra Yellow. What are the default stripe colors for a Judge? Green! That combo sounds a lot like a typical Electra, but not a GS . . . and not that unusual, in the end, because they all match.

This is an old post, but I didn't want to start a new thread. (I wanted to keep these "rare color combos" pics together).
This 1964 GTO with a painted top just appeared on E-Bay..."two-tone skyline blue/nocturne blue combination. This paint scheme was featured on Ronny and the Daytona’s “Little GTO” album cover."

Ive had a few different combo's over the years pass thru me.
My very first 1969 Camaro was a VN Z/28, Silver Paint, Green standard bucket interior, console & gauges, Speed Warning, Tach, Dash Clock, Flat hood, NO spoilers, and that was it!
Had another 1969 Z/28 that was Azure Turquoise, White Standard Buckets, X33-D80, Console and Gauges, Tach, Dash Clock, ZL2, Spoilers. Put a X-RAM on it with the 2nd design off road cam in it....That thing was dead until 3500 RPM's then took off like a raped ape thru 3rd!!!
Found a Black Vinyl Top Z10 once in a yard.

I vaguely remember that... was featured in a magazine back in the 80's and if I recall correctly there was a pic of the trim tag that showed it was actually repainted and was supposed to be frost or fathom green.

Was'nt it featured in Super Chevy back in the late eighties? Black and white feature? Heater delete. If I remember right there was a shot of the trim tag and it was a Fathom Green car originaly. I would have to dig up my old issues to see. That was a long time ago I may be wrong.

Regarding the red on red convertible...
My dad's '70 Convertible was born a Cranberry Red / Red interior Malibu 350, Disc Brake car. Now it's an SS "tribute" car, (clone has such a negative sound). Black on Red w/ a 396. Yes, I know... people frown on fake SS cars, but this one will never be passed off as "real", and it wouldn't pass for "real" anyway.

Unfortunately i doubt it. It wasent for sale and my plan was to have a 350 backed by a muncie and leave it all original and drive it for the summer. But someone came along and made a hefty offer that got it out of my hands. Still not sure i made the right decision selling it. But they come and go, i guess.

Back in the '80s, I ordered a couple new Oldsmobiles as sold orders. While certainly not muscle cars, these two were unique nonetheless. A 1985 Olds Delta 88 2dr in Dk Sable Brown w/ burgundy cloth seats. And a 1988 Olds Cutlass Cruiser wagon (Ciera FWD) in Medium Charcoal Metallic w/ Saddle leather seating. The wagon had woodgrain and actually looked real good; the Delta 88 not so much. I had to write override letters to the Zone Rep, but once he signed off, the orders were accepted and the units were built.

A few years back, I passed on a 70 L78 Nova that was originally Astro Blue, with White top and light blue gut, never saw another one even remotely close to that

Interesting, our '69 Nova is an 02A car with body number WRN259193. So, it was built the prior week with about 41,000 bodies in between!!

The other day at the auction I saw a '16 Corvette Z06 Convertible in dark blue over bright red leather. I knew the guy that ordered the car (for his wife) but it sustained minor shipping damage and GM wouldn't make any price concession other that repairing the damage. To make a long story short; the repair was undetectable and he still refused to take the car as GM attached the transit damage to the car's history. The fellow told me had to pay $545.00 for a "non-recommended" color override. I know the car might sound weird by description, but WOW!!! Was it sharp looking!!!

Not the rarest color combo here, but how many black-on-black '68 Camaros actually came from the factory that way?

Not sure about the green interior, but the brown on gold doesn't look bad.

Could you get a brown hockey stick stripe? I thought it was either white, black or red.

White, back, or red is correct. Stripe is like a mustache on Brooke Shields.

That was the suggested colors in the Dealer book. But I have yet to see another one in this combo. It was also featured in Chevelle world Magazine sept /oct 2012 for this reason. I would love to see another one. it Has a/c too. Ordered new at Norman Boguess Chevy In Madisonville KY then went to AZ and CA then back to NC.

At least the orange, Ford "CAUTION FAN" sticker is correctly colored, albeit incorrect. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

A friend of mine had two 69 Camaro's. They were both Hugger Orange with blue standard interior. One was an SS and one was a standard.

I would have to see the trim tags on those to believe that. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif

On the mopar front, its hard to beat the ivy green Daytona with a mod top. Somebody wanted attention with that car.

....except a Mod Top (note that the term is a Plymouth item) Daytona was not built at the factory.

Yes and no. A factory daytona was done partially at Creative industries (I believe), and that is where the top was put on.

You know that "registry" will accept any car without verification, right? The story may be true (or not), but the registry doesn't confirm pedigree.
