Is Annie the sYc's "secretary?"
Either way, I know it is good to have magazine coverage, but another McClurg comedy of errors?

I thought he retired? Most folks just look at the pics, and if they read the article the mistakes seem to just slide by.
He took a bunch of pics of my beater, but no joy. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

[/ QUOTE ]
Yes..Annie is our secretary.
IMO, I thought it was a nice article. I really thought he captured the true spirit of the event in the first paragraph.
<font color="red"> It's a simple concept, which few clubs (let alone sanctioning organizations) seem to grasp--namely, have an event which includes a full day of drag racing, followed by both an indoor concours and outdoor show and shine competition based strictly on fun. That's right. No fancy trophies. No complicated points system. No outlandish entry fee. </font>
As per a comedy of errors, yes, there were a few, but that it going to happen, partly my fault, and here is why. Bob is with us once a year, trying to put names with faces with cars. He does not hang out on here, nor see us at other shows, so often times he is meeting folks, and seeing their cars for the first time, and at the SCR, many new faces with several new cars. At the SCR he shoots 1000s of pictures, does 15-20 ?? feature cars plus an overview of the event. He does take notes, lots of them, but we all know how tricky it can be trying to decipher your hand written notes. Even then, once he gets down to doing the article(s), he has questions. That is where I come in. He will call me from time to time, asking such questions as how many cars were at the track, who ran what time, who owned the Red Deuce, what about this car or that car, etc, which often times I do not know, as I am so busy, and having so much fun, that the SCR weekend is a blurr to me. Also, because I am busy at work, and he needs to meet a deadline, there just is not enough time for Bob to run each and every article he does by me, so he goes with what he has.
IMO, the ideal solution would be for someone to document the whole weekend, taking precise notes, from the golf tournament, to the meet and greet, to the racing, banquet, auction and shows, so a the end of the weekend, Bob, or any other writer needing info could simply contact them to get accurate information. Any takers?
I appreciate Bob and other media folks covering the SCR, and, until we can come up with a better solution, I can live with a few errors, as the main thing, they are there. I counted 26 pictures in the SC article...cool. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Let's get Bob on board here. All he would have to do is post his questions and many of us could reply to him via PM or direct e-mail. I for one would be happy to offer any little bit of assistance to help keep things straight.
I haven't been a SC fan for quite a while but I'll go looking for this issue. Congrats to everyone!

It was a cool article!!! It's always fun to see photos of events which are a part of our lives.
What would be real cool is maybe having the opportunity to get some copies of the ones which hit the editing room floor!!!!

Tom, you made an appreciative and thoughtful post in defense to McClurg's coverage of SCR. Well said. I commend you for that.
However, I am not criticizing McClurg to be facetious here. In my, and many others estimation here, McClurg has made major careless errors in just about every article that he has written on behalf of the sYc and its members. I am looking at several right now. For example, in the one he did about my Deuce he refers to Canonsburg as Mechanicsburg (see article below). He also made errors in relation to Deuce features, etc. I have another article where he credits another individuals sign collection shown at Vette Fest to be owned by me. I can go on and on. There is something to be said about simple fact checking, as it goes a long way. If I were the president of a club that McClurg was covering I would INSIST that he run past me any article that feature my club and its members. The clubs integrity and reputation need to be protected. Unfortunately vigorously in this world. There are many people out there that are just itching to tear up the sYc and its members because of a carelessly written article that is supposedly "fact." I wonder what is being said about a certain 1970 "unrestored" Harrell Camaro right now in the land of the banished.
Again, I am not trying to be rude. As someone who also writes (I write an annual column, have contributed to many books, and have even been just contracted to write a history book on a Chicago neighborhood), I believe in doing the proper research on the topic you are going to write about, even if all it takes is a two minute google search. Most professionals live by this principle. Once again, I am not trying to be a jerk, and I believe that Tom and the sYc do a phenomenal job running and protecting the club. I just think that Bob McClurg needs to take writing about the sYc a little more seriously. It's not a one way street here. We are not the only ones benefiting by being in print. The last time I heard, an author (McClurg), is getting paid for his articles on the sYc and its members. No us, no payday for him. Just get it right.
http://www.yenko.net/photos/data/500/medium/Untitled-1.JPG
Frank, blame me. If I asked, I would imagine Bob would allow me to proof most, if not all, of his articles, but here lays the problem.
I do not know everything there is to know about these cars, (who does?) so it would be me spending countless hours contacting owners and doing the research, and even then, not for sure if I would get it 100% correct. This would not be so much of a problem if he were doing a book, when I could fit it into my schedule, but often times he is a day or two away from a deadline.
As the head of the sYc, maybe I should get more involved in this aspect of the club, but to tell you the truth, I would rather spend time with my family, friends and my cars, then proofing articles just because a few A-holes want to "tear us up". After all, they have been attacking us for several years, and it seems the only place it has gotten them is banned from numerous web sites and shows, wallowing in their own self-pity. Who cares what they think?
I for one get a rush every time I see one of our member’s cars in print, warts and all.
BTW, others make mistakes, recently SC online did a nice article on Red Alert, listed Terry Carney and Bill Stephenson as still owning it. That was several owners ago, so not for sure where they got that info. To me, really does not matter, just glad they decided to cover the car.

Ok Tom. I can totally understand your view on the issue. I just wanted to get this out there. If Bob reads this and decides to be more vigilant as any professional would want to be then so be it. If not well then that is ok too I guess.

I agree with Tom......We don't need to be so "Nit-Picky" about the wording or Facts.........Look at the "Big" Picture and the coverage the Club and Members get.....That's what's Important.........To Paraprhrase our "New" President........."Words......."Just" words" ...

In Bob's defense I have to say he may have little control over some of the miscues. Many of these writers submit articles to the respective publications and are quite surprised at how the final piece appears when the magazine hits the stands. These submissions cross the desks of a number of 'editors' who alter, delete and modify content and size to fit the allowable space.
Based on conversations with Doug Marion just a few short years ago, he submitted articles to Chevy Rumble and had NO idea when or if they would be published. He actually had to go to the news stand, buy each issue, scan through it to see if any of his articles were included, then prepare an invoice and send to John Dianna for payment.
I had lost interest in Super Chevy for a number of reasons, but now that Bob (and Doug Marion from time to time) is submitting articles on events and cars WE care about, I will pick up certain issues of SC. Sure, there are errors from time to time. And I can say for myself, I probably get more upset when it's in an article about a friend's car than if it were mine.
I'm thinking of a day I spent with Dennis Hartweg at the Secretary of State Show just after he took delivery of the #23 ZL-1. He was parked next to a certain DY Yenko Camaro. The crowd would walk right past Dennis' ZL-1 and stop to stare at the Yenko. He and I were standing behind his car kind of chuckling at what we saw. I made the statement that they obviously had no idea what they had just missed. I recall vividly his response, "It doesn't matter what they think; we know, don't we."
I still miss that man.

I did not want to say anything until I had a chance to see the print issue. Looking at the photo Carl's car actually looks kind of orange... (the way the photo came out). Bob McClurg may have looked at the photo later and reached the conclusion that it looked orange and thus was my car.
The car in the Photo with Les is Carl Bolander's 70 COPO and it is gold with black stripes. Car ran strong all weekend.

We can get him a copy of the video which includes many people speaking thier name and description of the car. We will be there for the meet and greet through the car show this year. Congrats to all! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gifSome of you need to cut Bob some slack. First off, any "errors" that may be done, 98% of the readers never even notice, or for that matter even give a $hit. Bob's out at the track in 90+ degree weather taking pix, not eating or drinking right cause he's trying not to miss anyhing. In the past, my wife has been out getting him some pizza and water, to try and keep him going as he is going full out, and I'm sure after the week-end, it's mostly a blurr. Again, only the few here even notice or care. Any coverage for the reunion can only be a good thing! Good job Bob!
