Cross flags look black (396) not red (427) to me. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

I had a 67 396 block with a suffix code that I could not find in any book. After I put it on eBay (with a 67 Chevelle) someone emailed me a picture of a P-O-P with the same suffix on it, and the orginal buyer was the Illinois Dept. of Public Safety. After more research it turned out that the code was for a 350 HP (Holley carb) 396 for full size police car use only. I guess the cops wanted more than a 325HP 396 with a quad, but the guys holding the purse-strings wouldn't spring for the cost of putting 427's in the fleet. So maybe this 66 has a special 396 under the hood too?

If they had put the 427s in them the boys in the maintenence shop would have swapped them all out for L35s and gone racin' with the 427s!

Cool Picture!

Jeff, Do you still have the block or the picture of that POP? My brother and I have been researching these COPO cngine/tranny codes for several years now and examples don't come along often. On another note, I have a set of NOS 427 flags at home with a black painted background. I have seen them both ways, of course the majority have been red though.

I also have a set of 427 emblems with the crossed flags...but the flags are smaller and these smaller versions ( I believe ) went on the front fender of a 1966 corvette.
....I pick up my 1966 Belair "post car" tomorrow from the upholstery shop....new "Cameo Beige" paint and new "Fawn" vinyl interior...new dual snorkel air cleaner with a big block and 4 speed, F41 suspension, power disc brakes and power steering.....YeeeeHaaaaawww! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Didn't I read somewhere about a '69 Belair or Impala in New Mexico that had a 435hp 427 police engine? Or am imagining things?

Not to take this thread too far off course, but didn't the New Mexico Highway Patrol use a Super Bird too? I could have sworn I read that somewhere...

My older brother bought a 427 engine at a local engine exchange here in Cleveland, this was around 1971, that came from a wrecked 1968 Cleveland police car. He doesn't specifically remember the engine code, but it was one that he or his friends could not decipher. He bought it for $275, carb to pan, for his 69 SS Chevelle that he spun the bearings on.

The engine was basically bullet proof. He beat the heck out of it and so did my other brother who he sold it to. The engine was extremely strong, never required a rebuild and won many street races. The car eventually went to several local guys before disappearing forever.

I wonder if there is something to the 427/435hp in cop cars mentioned earlier.

427's (and 396's, for that matter) have a great rod/stroke ratio with a relatively long connecting rods and a short stroke. Couple that with the fact that they all have forged steel crankshafts and forged rods and you have the makings of a durable, hard-to-hurt engine!

Orlando is exactly correct....this 1966 Biscayne is indeed a COPO vehicle....Special Order, Police Car 396 with a 2 speed powerglide transmission. Look for it to be debuted in a few years.....along with an amazing display!

With this car being so rare...I would say that there is a good chance of it being this same Police Biscayne in this picture.

Obviously I like these 2 Dr. Sedan cop cars being my '67 is an ex RCMP unmarked 2 Dr. Post Ghost car...factory 140 Speedo, 396 'IV' L35/M40 and original cowl tag w/ a Fleet Code & 'RED TAG RCMP' imprinted on it..
Love to see more on the '66 being restored if at all possible?.
There was another '66 396 2Dr. Post ex Police project car for sale up here in Canada a year or so ago from New Mexico or somewhere like that I think...probably still around if anyone's in the need?.
A few months back there was a '64 ex RCMP 2 Dr. Post SB car for sale in Western Canada...cheap too and I don't know what became of it?.
There's a restored '62 ex RCMP 2 Dr. Post car in British Columbia somewhere too...a SB car that was for sale for too much $ a few years back..
I remember the Police Mopar winged car story mentioned above too...yes New Mexico or somewhere like that, confiscated by the cops and put into service also may even have been the rarer Daytona not the SuperBird?.
That black '61 Poncho unmarked Batwing Post car that was in a few mags a couple years back is pretty cool too...supposedly about 50 built?.

I have a 1969 396 from a local police car. Two barrel intake and carb, same guts as a 350HP otherwise.
