I came across these awesome behind the scenes shots on a pbase gallery of a person named Richard Guillis. All three were taken during the filming of the opening scene. Unfortunately, now all that's left on his site is one small gallery with no more TLB photos.

Here's the '55 Chevy with alot of "LA Street Racers Assoc." denim jackets wandering around.

This one features what looks like the 1970 AAR 340 6-BBL 'Cuda which races the '55 Chevy in the opening scene (and which Taylor later says was a 'Hemi' in the next scene). That also looks like that might be director Monte Hellman (with the wild hair) leaning against the car. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

This one looks like they might be getting ready for the "scatter" scene.

Here's the link to his profile: http://www.pbase.com/asmywhim/profile

I checked the site a couple days ago and all the images were gone except for one gallery with some pics of a woman. I just checked today and there was a new gallery with some pics, so who knows what's going on? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Here's some more photos I found on the net. Some are from an article from Hi-Performance Pontiac magazine called "Behind the Camera: Two-Lane Blacktop" (article: http://www.highperformancepontiac.com/fe...ktop/index.html (http://www.highperformancepontiac.com/features/hppp_0806_behind_the_camera_two_lane_blacktop/index.html) ).

There were three '55s used. One for racing, one for exterior driving shots and one for interior shots.

I believe this is the race car, as the other two cars I believe weren't set up with high performance, dual-4-bbl engines. The guy working on the engine is Technical Advisor Jay Wheatley, who was hired to do the driving in the racing scenes as well as keep the engines in all the cars in tip-top-shape.

This was the car used solely for "interior shots". You can tell by the fake mounted carburetor (from the inside, you can see down the "grump-lump" hood scoop, so they mounted a fake carburetor to fit inside the scoop to make it look correct http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Jay Wheatley again working on this car.

If I remember right the race 55 was painted black had a different hood scoop added and became John Milner's nemesis in American Graffiti. I also remember the AG 55 had an L/88 in it. The race 55 also had fiberglass doors, trunk and one piece tilt front.
