Thanks for the info. I was really trying to keep up with the story and I'm glad the Captain is safe. There was a day when Americans didn't get messed with overseas and it's good to see that pirates will think twice when they see an American flag being flown on a ship!

A leisurely swim (for them), I'd guess. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

The fourth pirate was on board the navy ship negotiating at the time the other three were...negotiated with. That's why he is currently still alive.

I think it's time they just institute a new bounty system:

$500 for any live pirate turned over to the US Navy.
$50,000 for any dead one turned over to the US Navy.

They used to do that with bank robbers in the old west - $50 for a live one, $500 for a dead one. I've seen a few of those old "Bank Robbers Wanted" posters.

Go Navy! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

This Sunday, April 12, 2009 photo released by the U.S. Navy, shows Maersk-Alabama Capt. Richard Phillips, below, standing alongside Cmdr. Frank Castellano, commanding officer of the USS Bainbridge, after being rescued by U.S. Naval Forces off the coast of Somalia.

I've been following it too. Apparently, it was snipers on deck who took them out as the lifeboat was reeled in closer.
One would think they might be a tad more careful about trying to hijack a ship with an American flag.......... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I am sure if the rescue would have gone "south" someone from the fleet would have been on record as having ordered the mission. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif IMO...It is what it is - and it went on about three days too long.

I was already having Iran America Held hostage flashbacks from the media coverage.

With that said, the SEALS and the US Navy ROCK when they get permission to do what they are trained to do.

Had captives been released this way from the beginning, we wouldn't have a pirate problem. Our son-in-law has been to shooting competitions in Bisley England. What he says, basically, is that if a sniper, and his spotter, can see you, you're dead.

No, "someone from the fleet" does not have the authority to give the order to use deadly force in a situation like this. That has to come from the president, period. (If the pirates fired upon the U.S. Navy ship or on the seal team then they can shoot back--to kill, of course, and they could then rightly claim self-defense.) If this had gone badly it would have rightly been placed at Obama's feet. He has already gone on record as saying the "buck" stops with him so I take him at his word. Believe me, I am fully aware that had this gone "south" Obama's political opposition would scream for his impeachment--we'd never hear the end of it.

I'm waiting to hear the dead pirates being called "victims" and Obama criticized for using "too much force." I'll bet that's gonna' happen.

When insurgents were firing on the US Marine Camp at The Beirut Airport in Feb 84 with mobile rocket launchers, I sat "on hold" with the "red phone" waiting for six hours for permission to fire. Oh yea I get it "Mr President this is seal team leader #1 here" the pirate just popped his head up" Can I take a Shot? That is how the media kind of portrays the action...

No that is not how it works. The President gave permission for the operation up to and including the use of deadly force. The Navy took care of the rest, and I highly doubt the blame would have been placed on the President if the operation would have gone wrong. Obviously since the Navy was taking the force action the Navy would have taken the blame.

If the SEALS missed the shots for whatever reason who else would there be to blame??

Giving the president the 100% credit for the planning, bravery and training of our SEALS and the Fleet personnel is a bit much don't you think?

A decision that could have been made days earlier. I view it as an Easter publicity stunt. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I am glad Capt. Phillips was rescued and is safe. He is an American Hero for giving himself up for his crew and then trying to save himself. As far as Obama having anything heroic to do with this.... I don't think so.. He waited around for a few days and talked with his lawyers and advisors about what to do for his namessake... He signed papers to save his own butt and to make sure he would look good either way it turned out. A real President would have had a half dozen ships in the area in as much time as it would take to get them there and would have made a statement to the cowardly pirates to return our American immediately or face complete and utter destruction... Negotiate? ? ? Why ? This is America, we don't negotiate... We get our men back and blow things up when we feel like it.. This guy has no salt and is only concerned with himself.. he couldn't care less for our military or us... I am thankful the Military took care of business and returned the Capt. I say blow holes all over that ocean and eliminate the 16 yr old pirates....

Well said Tommy. The news is reporting the "pirates" have taken 2 more ships this morning. I guess they didn't learn anything afterall. Or mabey they aren't the least bit worried about the US or anyone else doing anything, as the 2 ships do not carry American flags.

"The President gave permission for the operation up to and including the use of deadly force."

That's all I said in the first place but, as usual, the point gets twisted and warped into something else. The president gives the green light to use deadly force and then the on-scene commanders carry out the mission as they see fit.

"If the SEALS missed the shots for whatever reason who else would there be to blame??"

The president and he alone. He gave the order to use deadly force and the buck stops with him.

"Giving the president the 100% credit for the planning, bravery and training of our SEALS and the Fleet personnel is a bit much don't you think?"

Who said that? I don't see where anyone gave Obama 100% of the credit for anything other than authorizing the action taken. But, I'll go back and re-read the thread--maybe I missed where someone said Obama deserves 100% of the credit.

"A decision that could have been made days earlier. I view it as an Easter publicity stunt."

Pretty cynical take on a successful rescue of an American hostage. Kind of belittles the herosim of the SEAL snipers who performed perfectly.
